Killing Skeletron is the only way to access the dungeon, which can greatly advance your character. However, without the right weapons and armor, Skeletron can be quite the challenge. So, here is the way I killed Skeletron once.
NOTE: I am very good at dodging attacks. This is probably the main reason why I was able to beat him this way.
Weapons:
Phaseblade
Minishark (optional)
Armor:
Gold at the minimum, however, I killed him with worse armor than gold.
Accessories
Sandstorm in a bottle
Arena
A flat area with a heart lantern and a campfire
During fight:
Summon in Skeletron and run to your arena. Dodge his arms and slash at him with phaseblade or shoot him with minishark.
