PC How to Quickly and Easily Beat the Eater of Worlds, Even in Expert Mode

After the 1.3 update, naturally I wanted to try out expert mode. I figured that with 1000+ hours played that I should still be fine, but then I got slaughtered by the Eater of Worlds multiple times. Once I tried this and saw how well this works, I figured I could save someone else that frustration.

What you need:

  • Medusa Head
  • Any armor higher than gold/platinum. You might be able to do it with gold/platinum armor, but I didn't try. Armor sets with magic bonuses (jungle, cobalt, meteor) will make the fight go even faster.
  • A few healing potions. You may not need any, as segments drop hearts when you kill them and can be enough.
  • Worm food (if you're fast and can get to a good location, you can smash orbs instead)
  • Optional: campfire, heart lantern, any potions you like that might help.
What you do:
  1. Create a typical arena with layers of wooden platforms. I only used two layers of platforms, each around 50 platforms long. By most standards that's pretty small, but that's all I needed because this strategy was so effective.
  2. Set up your campfire, heart lantern and use any potions you want. I only had the Well Fed buff and a campfire when I tried this out, and I was fine.
  3. Summon the Eater of Worlds and use the Medusa Head as fast and as much as you can manage. Try to get it so that it goes off when there are a large number of body segments on screen.
Why this works:

The Medusa Head treats every segments as a separate enemy and deals damage to any segment in its hit range. For example, if all fifty segments are in the hit range, all fifty will individually receive damage. This aspect of the weapon makes the fight go VERY quick. I'm talking less than a minute if you're lucky. It will take longer depending on how well the EoW cooperates with having its body above ground. Note: the attack does not pass through blocks, so any segments of the EoW that are underground will not be affected.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not particularly strong at boss fights, mostly because I suck at dodging. This strategy still made the fight go from soul-crushingly difficult to disgustingly easy.

The Downside:

The Medusa Head is not easy to get. Medusa is a difficult opponent, with 200hp in normal mode and a whopping 400hp in expert, as well as a nasty attack. She also drops her head at a low rate (only 1%, or 1 in every 100 times), so you have to kill a fair number of them to get one. I'll be the first to admit that I died a good number of times trying to get one, but once I had it, the EoW was such a piece of cake that it was completely worth it.

Hope this helps! I know I wish that I had realized it sooner.

Good tactic for it, I should try this one later.

But meh, I hate Medusas. They're annoying as...

neat guide, I tried it ate end game with nebula armour and like killed it in ten hits
I am not good at boss fight ethier. nor dodging

Also, if one hit is critical, everything in range also becomes a critical hit.

Underground is better to fight eow because it cant shoot through blocks. Using vilethorn is way better method. It is killable without armor.
