Pixel Art Idea for pet with special ability

So, I'm eager to make a pet in Terraria. The one I drew in Aseprite is pretty crude art, I'll soon clean it up, scale it down a bit, clean it up again and animate it. I'm planning to make it be a pointer on rare creatures in a mod that I'll fill with content over time. It is a blue flying egg thing from Heavy Metal (1981).
I have several questions.
1) What size should a sprite be so that it is not too big for a pet?
2) I can't decide what to do with the steam/smoke effect that periodically escapes from the pipe when moving: make it part of the animated "movement" sprite (easier for me and, theoretically, can be used for resource pack) or make it an additional visual effect (it will look prettier, but I don't know how to do it yet)

Other drawing tips are welcome.
I'm not an artist.

I suggest taking some of the other pet sprites from the wiki to get a better idea of scale you can use. As for how to include the smoke, that would probably be done with particles rather being sprites connected to the pet's other sprites.

I resized it, cleaned it up and then tried to compare with sprites of player and with sprite of other pet. Are all in-game sprites made of double-sized pixels?

Ok so a few suggestions, to make the body less pyramidy, you can extend it just a bit and reduce the length of the arms, this will make the design a more compact and maintain the details you want to showcase. And I recommend it making the blinking a bit more snappy, using fewer frames will make it faster.

When it comes to the idea of it pointing at creatures, I suggest you segment the sprite a bit with layers, doing a base body layer as you can see here, and drawing the different arm angles on different layers. You can merge the layers later to have the finished versions.

Thank you so much for tips. Also I thought about making its "shocked" state when it puts hands on head if boss is alive/nearby (to be decided). I will draw it and figure out myself.

cool, where do you plan to include this pet? Like is it a boss drop, or npc sells it.

Also yeah, probably take an item from the same movie to serve as the pet item for this thing.

For your first question, most pets are smaller than the player, so the ideal size is under 20x25, but for a mod it can be bigger. And the second question, if it was me, I would make part of the animation because I only can do that way:brain:
