Suppose you want to have lights turn on only when your in a room, or a trap fire. Here is how you do it with potentially invisible sensors:

You put 'player above sensors below the room. They can be 5 blocks deep and painted with shadow paint if you want them hidden.
Next, connect all the sensors to lights (flags) above an any on logic box as shown in the room above.

When a player enters the room a sensor will turn on and the logic box will switch on your lights/traps...
Wiring:

Advantages: no visible switches, can be hidden, set and forget
disadvantages: expensive, must kill the Twins to get player above sensors
