I will say that 'improve' is a very subjective term. Not everyone likes the same stuff, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a mod the inclusion of which would be universally approved of.

No way, what makes a mod is that it's a mod, not terraria. the whole reason they exist is to be optionally downloaded (mod is short for modification)
Unless it's a small mod that just adds a small thing, not in a million years would I want calamity or thorium added to the core game

Calamity is a mod for Terraria, not even a suggestion, it technically already exists within the game, it's just made by the community. And people have the choice whether they want to play the mod or not. If they don't want to play it, then they don't include the mod.
So, other than that it's less depended from thirth party software like tmodloader. What kind of difference will it add if mods are included in the game? (which they more or less already are)

I've never seen a content mod that I thought fit well into Terraria's art style, balance, and mechanics.
