Is Andrew Spinks a self-taught programmer?

Is the creator of the game a self-taught programmer, or did he study in college/university? I can't find any info online. If he's completely self-taught, then that's really inspiring!

I found this response to a question asking him what experience he had before terraria on his AMA, he said this:

I was kicked out of high school junior year and am mostly self taught. I picked up a few things while in the Air Force but most of what I know has been learned through research and trial and error.

Really inspiring!
