Portfolio/Multi-Topic Islands outside of the main world

Terrarian
For a while I've been frustrated at how limiting the worlds feel regardless of how big or small they actually are. Sure, what we have now is still impressive, but I feel like as an exploration-oriented player, having to make a new world each time i'm done exploring one gets a bit monotonous to me. So, as a hopefully satisfactory solution, I propose some form of explorable islands outside of the normal reaches of the continent we already have.

So, how exactly do you get to one of these islands?
I was thinking you'd be able to buy boats & rafts from the pirate npc/shipwright npc/merchant/etc or craft one yourself (likely with a specialized crafting station), then place that boat down & mount it, then sail off toward the end of the map (which you'd otherwise be unable to cross), then it'd generate a unique island (which you'd be able to repeatedly visit if you had an item that'd let you save islands in some form of a menu) and you'd be able to explore it. Obviously, they'd be far smaller than a normal world, but regardless.

Terraria has about 5 distinct biomes, not including sub-biomes & corruptions (forest, desert, snowy, jungle, mushroom) but in lore there's TONS of room for INSANE styles of island biomes you'd never get in a normal terraria playthrough. Savannahs, Conceptually themed biomes (living forests, giant crystal islands, fragmented plains, whatever), badlands, volcanic islands, tropical islands, the list goes ON AND ON (believe me, i have ideas. *wink* (please i need a job *wink* (please))) so it'd be a net positive for builders too with countless new blocks and items to use in builds.
And along with biomes would more than likely come completely unique animals and critters you'd never see in the normal biomes, like lions, moths, new butterflies, new elementals, etc etc.

So we already have tons of new blocks to use and experiment with, new items, new biomes, new experiences, and an entirely new mechanic to tie it all together. But you know what i think would be even more sick? New npcs you'd be able to offer a place to live at. Heck, maybe even procedural npcs?
Like, towns wouldn't have to be limited to the amount of mannequins you can make, but instead how many npcs you can find. Obviously you'd have to convince them (maybe even build them their own house on that island?) before they'd consider living in your town, but imagine having npcs entirely unique to your playthrough.

Seriously, i'd LOVE to see a feature like this in terraria. Maybe it doesn't feel vanilla enough? If i could code and had a team of friends who'd help me out, i'd 100% mod this, but i don't know how to code and either way the workload without a team would be INSANE.
Hopefully my idea is considered, but it's alright if it ends up being too ambitious (because in and of itself this is an ambitious idea) but if it does end up being put on the to-do list i'll be glad to give you guys biome ideas.

I think it could be similar to Animal Crossing’s system where you go to a small, random island every trip.

pretty much what i was thinking, actually

I believe i've heard tell of a mod like ðis being made using Subworld Library. No idea if it's playable yet.

My mind immediately went to Animal Crossing. I think this would be a very cool idea. I think islands shouldn't have too much of an impact on main progression (like required bosses), but for something to do on the side. I think it would interesting if, however, different islands were unlocked through progression (like defeating bosses or events).

I think so too! maybe islands themed around said boss? (i.e crimson/corruption island, celestial-esque island for moon lord, etc)
