NPCs & Enemies Knight: Washed up hero that could maybe help you.

TheGuideIsEvil

Terrarian
A Knight spawns in an available house when you obtain a sword of noticeable quality (e.g. the Muramasa), and have 20 defense or more. He appears in complete steel armor, and his face or skin is never shown to the player.

The Knight can be hired by the player to fight alongside them as a permanent companion (unless dismissed). This function costs 30 gold, and it lasts for good (even if he dies). The Knight will either swing a special sword that deals about 30 damage (if an enemy is close), or he will shoot a special bow that deals 35 damage. He can also toss bombs on occasion that deal 50 damage. The Knight has 400 health.

The Knight is a very callous individual who seems to dislike everyone equally; this ties into his existence being a form of washed up hero. His personality seems to exhibit a bizarre form of nihilism, and he doesn't really care about saving anyone anymore. The Knight was left on his own when fighting Skeletron by his peers, and this made him distrust people.

The Knight seems well aware about the player's goals of being a hero, but seems to question your morality, as your actions in game do bring chaos. He is also aware that bosses can be re summoned..weird, right?

Lines:

"Oh..it's you."
"Want my advice? Stop trying to be a hero. You cannot save this world."
"Killing legendary creatures means nothing if you can just summon them again and wreak havoc on the little humanity that still exists."
"This is your fault. You kept pushing the natural order, striking down many foes. And for what? Being remembered? Gold? Collectibles?"
"You killed the Wall of Flesh? Why? Did you have to release the ancient spirts of light and dark for a dare or something?"
"Release that moon squid onto humanity and I will stab you where the sun doesn't shine."
"You're weak. I hate you."
"Look what the cat dragged in."
"Make yourself useful and get me some ale. I want to forget your ugly face."
"I don't like being around people. They'll leave you surrounded by the twisted hands of fate just to save themselves."

The Knight will defend fellow NPCs from being attacked, but only reluctantly.

The Knight can be made nicer if you find an "Apology Letter" and give it to him. It can be found in Hardmode Post Plantera dungeon, dropped by various late game Skeletons very rarely. It was written by someone who wronged the Knight.

His line when given the letter: "Wow..they did care." When talked to again, he will say: "-name of player-, I'm sorry for how I treated you and everyone else around here. I was angry at how I was abandoned by my comrades, and I took it out on those that didn't deserve it. I hope you can forgive me.". If you say "yes", then he'll say "Thank you. I was wrong about you. You're quite a legend." If you say "no", then he'll say "I understand..completely. I will try to make it right somehow." He acts nicer after.

Lines after given the letter:
"Please be careful out there, my idiotic but well meaning friend."
"I missed you, -name of player-. I wrote a song for you, but then I realized I didn't have an instrument."
"I'm gonna try to open up more to people. It feels better than closing up like a clam."
"I'm starving. Have any burgers?"
"You..took down the Moon Lord? Cool. Just don't summon him again.. please."
"It's at least a tolerable day with you around."
"Swords are the best weapon, no?"
"-Party Girl's name- actually knows how to throw it down."
"Wanna burn down the dungeon together?"
"Argh..I be a pirate! Wait..I'm a knight.."

Names:

Armando, Danny, Miguel, Rodrigo, Mateo, Thiago, Nicholas, Oscar, Hector, Rafael, Simon

UPDATE (due to suggestions):

-His damage scales in game to upwards of 90+ based on progress in game
- His defense scales to 100+ in game, based on progress
- He regenerates 10 health a second in pre Hardmode, and 40 health a second in Hardmode
- Hiring cost is lowered to 25 gold
- He rides a horse in Hardmode, and uses a jousting lance, a crossbow, and a form of hard hitting arquebus (plus bigger bombs)
-800 health in hardmode
-Can drink super health potions when critically damaged
- As a reference to Monty Python's Black Knight, the Knight is truly immortal, reforming about 15 seconds after death; this keeps him useful in fights.
-Most lore has been removed: instead, his trademark nihilism comes from him not really being able to truly die
- His damage becomes ever more potent the more you progress, and he gets to move faster and more capable.
- He uses many weapon types, even a catapult/ballista in endgame that can be destructive
-His nihilism is toned down a bit, and he seems more self loathing
-He grows to care for you throughout the game
-Letter is tossed out and deleted, too much lore is there..lol
-Living preferences is that the Knight is almost neutral to everyone, but dislikes the Princess, Guide, Clothier and Mechanic (who are story relevant NPCs), due to the damage that he believes they caused. He is just mean to everyone.
-In terms of biome living preferences, he probably doesn't care that much of biomes, due to his nihilism.
-The Knight is ethnically Hispanic/Latino in his coding, despite real world ethnicities not existing. His Latin/Spanish names reflect this, and he sometimes slips in Spanish terms in his speech.
-In credits, you see his face: he has slightly brown skin, short black hair, and a goatee beard. He also has reddish brown eyes. He is seen drinking sake, while being a bit sad. Your character walks in, and he looks at you, and smiles.

An interesting idea, but I feel it might scale poorly as the game goes on. sure, he might be marginally useful against bosses like King Slime, but you're getting it wayyy too late in the game.

A max of 50 damage also just isn't cutting it. Unless the power of his attacks scales as I have the knight, there's no way I'm paying 30 gold for it, especially in the early game. I like that it sticks with you after death, though.

Also, with virtually no mobility or anything past basic regen, the Knight is going to get swamped with smaller enemies and one shot by bosses. Maybe give him extra defense or a horse mount he can ride? A jousting lance would be cool too.

Updated. Please check

I don't think he'd be very useful. Unless he gets significant mobility upgrades, he won't be keeping up with any bosses beyond Deerclops. And, while this is just personal preference, I don't think he needs lore like this. Terraria NPCs don't really have lore.

Would he be the only npc to dislike the princess pre-letter?
Or in generall: what are his living preferences?
