PC Lag when walking on ground

EUREKA

Terrarian
Obligatory info on laptop:
Nvidia Geforce GT 630M
8GB RAM
Windows 10 64bit i5 core
tl:dr :My laptop is fully capable of running this game

I have this weird problem that whenever my character moves on the ground, be it on the surface, in caves , up high in floating islands or my sky bridge, there is this intense lag that makes the game unplayable. However when i move in the air - say I use a grappling hook/ something in a bottle/ wings/ rocket boots, or if I'm on my slime mount walking/jumping, the game functions just fine.

A little backstory to how this happened: I got terraria 1.2 on my laptop when it was using windows 7, then 1.3 came around and the game worked just fine. After updating to windows 10, my laptop could still run terraria 1.3 with no issues. However, after I clean installed windows 10, and installed terraria once more, this started happening. I updated all my drivers/reinstalled xna multiple times/ tried deleting game files/ starting new world/reinstalled terraria and steam/lowering graphics to lousiest setting/everything on this forum and nothing works.

I've experienced something similar to this before, but in a small portion of what you're describing. First thing you should try is turning Multicore Lighting off, and turning Frameskip on. It's more than likely a performance issue. Terraria 1.3 is much more computer intensive than the last few patches. Other than that, it might be your computer usage through various programs or such.

i have the sme problem but i have windows 8 and my laptop is completely porable i have intel core i5 1.73ghz
4gb ram
i wtched a lot of viedos nothing works i hate it though

Game Dependencies (MUST Install)
Troubleshooting Your Problem with TerrariaServer.exe
In order to figure out what your problem is with the game, we require that you run the Terraria Server Client (TerrariaServer.exe). This will display any errors or successes on launch. Should there be any errors from the program itself, use the command prompt and copy the error to display it here.
  1. Right click within the Command Prompt.
  2. In the drop-down menu, select Mark.
  3. Once you made a selection, Right Click or Press Enter to copy.
  4. Paste your results in your thread.
If you have trouble with the above instructions, your system might be showing "Not Responding" or your System may need to be rebooted to start clean.

Before proceeding any further, please delete the config.json file located in your Terraria Folder under My Documents/My Games. Then start Terraria again, this may fix some unexplained issues, but we wish to make sure you are running a nice and clean installation:
  1. Locate My Documents Folder.
  2. Open My Games Folder.
  3. Open Terraria Folder.
  4. Delete Config.json file from this location.
Installing / Re-Installing XNA and .NET Framework 4.5.2 or Better
You may be experiencing these issues with a faulty installation, and even worst your system might the be problem to this. Attempt to uninstall both XNA and .NET Framework from your machine, be advised, do not uninstall the pre-installed versions of .NET Framework that came with your system! Once you have successfully re-installed your XNA and .NET Framework you may attempt to try Terraria again.
Verify Terraria's Steam Cache
If your game is unresponsive at times it is recommended you do a Verify Steam Cache with the game provided for Steam (This does not include GOG Version).
  1. Goto My Library on Steam.
  2. Right-Click Terraria and Select Properties.
  3. Goto Local Files Tab.
  4. Now Select Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
If you have trouble with the above instructions, you may be using a different provider or retailer.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My world has corrupted somehow and will not load properly, what can I do?
A: You may have corrupted the world by using modded clients, computer shutdown before the world could complete the save, or system failure within Terraria that caused the problem. You can try attempting to load your world using TEdit (Download).

Q: My game is not launching, or I get errors regarding XNA/.NET Framework!
A: You can attempt to make sure you have all Game Dependencies first, then try attempting this solution:

If you don't feel like sifting through all that, it's basically to do with the framework permissions.

This is how you change the right to use Framework/XNA:
  1. Right-Click the specific directory (Listed Below).
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select the Security Tab
  4. Click on Advanced Option
  5. Select the Owner Tab
  6. Click on the bottom button to Edit.
  7. On this window select the Administrator in the row and make sure to select the Checkboxes below.
  8. Hit Apply and close all the windows.
  9. Try running the game again.
Do the above for all of the following FOLDERS:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_32:
Microsoft.Xna.Framework\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Xact\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL:
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Avatar\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input.Touch\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Net\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Storage\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Video\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553

Q: Steam has reported that one (1) file has failed verification and was downloaded?
A: This file is known as the serverconfig.txt file. Originally this file shouldn't be packed with the game as Terraria should create this file automatically on launch if it is missing or out of date. Due to it being changed and updated by server owners, the file will constantly fail the verification process. This has no effect on playing the game, and can be ignored.

Q: I am experiencing low frame rate for Terraria, but the machine passes as recommended?
A: If you are using nVidia Control Panel, you can select Terraria.exe process and change the specifications on how your graphic card handles the game. Follow these instructions:
  1. Open nVidia Control Panel.
  2. Select Manage 3D Settings.
  3. Choose Program Settings Tab.
  4. Select Terraria as current program.
  5. Turn Triple buffering and Vertical sync to On.
  6. Run Terraria and turn Frame Skip to Off.
  7. The application should be running better than your current setup.
Alternate Solution (The Aero Mode Bug)
  1. Goto your Desktop.
  2. Right Click and Select Personalize.
  3. Enable Aero Mode by selecting an Aero Background Option.
  4. You can also go Fullscreen Mode while Disabled Aero Mode.

Title says everything. When I'm walking on ground my game starts to lag. However, when I'm flying through air /grappling the experience is smooth. I found that turning off frameskip helps, but it turns my game into slow mo. My laptop is fully capable of handling this game.

Press Window button + R, and type dxdiag. Press Yes when something pops up and post what the first page tells here. It's much more detailed than what you screencap-ed.

Just so you know, your laptop is not the masterpiece you seem to believe it is. 2 gigabytes of ram is not a lot at all. Laptops in general are already weak. The AMD Radeon r2 is bad by most standards. Have you turned all of your settings to the absolute lowest?

You are way below the minimum system requirements, sorry.

Interesting! That actually makes a certain amount of sense. If this explanation can be confirmed I'd say that probably qualifies as a bug. Obviously it doesn't affect everybody, but if tracking this achievement is putting an unusual load on the system, that's something that could be improved, surely.

Problem is, there are two instances handled with Achievements. The Steam copy and the internal copy. Which one is it?

Good point. I suppose if someone who has this problem is willing to spend 10 bucks on an experiment and buy the GOG version, that would more or less answer the question. (Or if anyone has this problem and uses the GOG version already.)

I am experiencing this issue as well, however it just started for me. Yesterday I was able to play Terraria just fine. I'm uploading my specs in case someone needs to look at them.

Discussed this with the others, indications are that it may be related to Steam lag, updating the achievement data there.

The vast majority of people do not encounter this issue, but everyone who plays on Steam would have gone through the period of time leading up to this achievement, so it strikes me that its likely something user side.

Uggh. This issue annoys me. If I use the Steam version it lags so much I can barely function, and GOG has not been updated for tModloader. I do how Re-logic decides to either remove it, or make a way to disable achievement progress. It would help me and save me time and for once nothing would stop me from playing my Modded Series finally. Cause after 3 months of planning, I am still stuck doing nothing.
[doublepost=1473985269,1473984894][/doublepost]This is how I feel currently.

My only suggestion would be to cheat that specific achievement with SAM, but I am not one to recommend it because it is a Steam Violation and a security risk. It allows you to basically cheat up all achievements in one go. In this case it may be a solution to those experiencing this issue.

I went to play Terraria for the first time in a very long time and ran into this issue. Upon trying to troubleshoot the issue, and after reading this thread that it happens in the Steam version, not the GOG version. I dug into what was going on with some SysInternals tools. I noticed Steam was spamming access to a regkey that did not exist. I then Googled that, and found other users having a similar issue being caused by something in the SDL2.dll in the Steam client. Following these steps: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/S...ons/0/666825525114076787/#c620703493330901013 if you suspend the steam thread that is causing the regkey spamming, I also unplugged my MadKatz Xbox360 Controller (from what I read, that regkey was related to xbox 360 controllers). Launched the game and everything was fine. Here is where things get weird. I replugged my controller and relaunched, things were still fine. To verify everything, I resumed the thread, and the relaunched the game. It still worked fine. At this point I completely killed all Steam executables and relaunched Steam and Terraria, and the game still ran fine. (Procmon still showed that steam was trying to hit the regkey after the relaunch).

I honestly ended back up at square one, but with a working Terraria. Why or how, I am not fully sure, but I wanted to share my experience. I haven't rebooted. I will try that tomorrow after work and see what happens, and try and replicate things again.

Wait wait, does that disable the achieve? Cause if I don't, it won't work.... (Can't try, I am at school using my new HP Laptop... Which I can't do anything on. :[)
