Simple Laser Rifle upgrade that is available after killing the Twins. It resembles a Laser Rifle with multiple barrels, and can be considered a slight precursor to the Post Golem Laser Machinegun. The Laser Shotgun shoots a scattershot of three to six shots of piercing pink lasers at a fairly high frequency and velocity. The average amount of fired projectiles during an attack is about 4.
The base damage of the Laser Shotgun is shown to be slightly higher than the Laser Rifle, and this fact, along with the multiple projectiles fired in one attack, translates to a much deadlier output of damage with this weapon.
The Laser Shotgun has about four weaknesses that serve to balance it. Firstly, there is the matter of available attack range; the Laser Shotgun is shown as being the best in its performance at close to medium range, compared to the Laser Rifle being decent at long range. Secondly, another downside is how the Laser Shotgun costs slightly more mana than its predecessor.
Third on the downsides is that the DPS is a bit unstable, given the massive discrepancy between the figure of three to six projectiles being fired. The fourth and final downside is that the Laser Shotgun doesn’t pierce that much more enemies; each laser can pierce up to three enemies, which is only one better than the Laser Rifle.
To offset these negative factors, the Laser Shotgun’s fire rate is a little better than its precursor, even if the DPS is kind of unpredictable. Despite this slightly inconsistent DPS, the Laser Shotgun is shown to be a viable magic weapon up to Plantera, and can even be useful a little beyond that if you’re adept at it. Its slightly low base damage makes Ichor a good synergy tool with it.

The Post Golem Laser Machinegun fires less projectiles and has a long windup compared to the Laser Shotgun, but has a much better DPS than the Laser Shotgun. This makes sense; the Laser Shotgun is mid-mechs, and the Laser Machinegun is Post Golem.
