Items Leather Rework

MrD108

Official Terrarian
Leather is a very strange item in Terraria. It is a crafting material used to craft the Archaeologist Jacket and Archaeologist Pants, but is itself only crafted from Rotten Chunks, so for some reason it is unavailable on pre-hardmode Crimson worlds. This is some weird artifact from early versions of the game and I propose a few ways to change it:

1. Ability to craft Leather from Vertebrae (yes, let's craft leather from bones, why not?).

2. Instead of using evil biome material, the Leather is crafted from Bunny at a 1:1 ratio (yes, it's a bit cruel, but that's basically how it works. Even the look matches).

3. Instead of crafting Leather, you can now buy it from the Clothier (that old guy is cursed anyway, so let him craft Bunnies into Leather, they could even add new dialogue that references it).

As Leather becomes a more common material it will be possible to use it in more recipes.

Yeaa more leather recipes maybe even the leather whip that you could buy from the zoologist

Making leather more accessible is a good idea, imo.

And all that leather could be used for both vanity and functional gear. Tho, It's a pre-hardmode resource, so the items shouldn't be too crazy or powerful. Some ideas could be:
  • A post-skeletron Dirty Bandit set made with leather and bone? Gives speed and crit chance, so basically an upgraded ninja armor.
  • Homemade Scabbard accessory that increases melee range and speed
  • And a Magic Waterskin accessory. Maybe it could do something with potions or with healing potions/items?
  • A Leather Sling as a ranged weapon. It throws rocks that deal mediocre damage, and it wouldn't require any ammo to use.

  • And for vanity, maybe a Biker Jacket or a Leather Apron
  • And then obviously, we could also add leather furniture, and then luxurious leather furniture in hardmode (fancy leather couches and stuff)

In regards to the Clothier, I don't think he should sell leather immediately; I think it should be a little challenging to get early on (especially if we were to add stuff like armor that require leather to make).
Once the player reaches hardmode, though, then the Clothier can start to sell it. Then it wouldn't be too easy to craft things with it pre-hardmode.

The Clothier is meant to be a new way to obtain Leather in this idea, so that it is available with both evil biomes before Hardmode.
They can then even remove Leather crafting from Rotten Chunks.

You technically can get both biomes. In graveyards you can buy corruption seeds, iirc. But that is just a roundabout way to get leather, so I agree new ways should be added.

Some ideas could maybe be:

1. Just like you said, vertebrae could also be used to make leather (although that wouldn't really make sense)

2. It could be dropped from crates from fishing?

3. Maybe have goblins sometimes drop leather (it looks like they wear it), with goblin scouts having a guaranteed drop chance?

This is brilliant I like the idea of leather being used in hardmode for gear maybe for a alternate armor for early hardmode idea summoner armor and a leather whip upgrade with this luxurious leather

Yes, you can buy them. You actually have to if you want to complete the Bestiary. There's just one small problem. They're only available in Hardmode.

leather is already available in crimson worlds as rotten chunks drop from Corrupt Statues which aren’t that rare, but having a less roundabout and more thematic way of getting it would be appreciated nonetheless

This is an excellent idea! I'm always down for the more artifacty parts of Terraria to get some more love to bring up to snuff with the rest of the game, heck, a lot of my own suggestions are made in this exact vein!

I've been thinking about what else could be made with Leather and I think I have a cool idea.
By combining Leather, Silk and Flinx Fur you could create a... Boxing Glove!
