Major delays/lag spikes since 1.3.0.4

Terrasyn

Eye of Cthulhu
I suppose I'm not the only one with this issue, but I am also having huge delays and lag spikes since the 1.3.0.4 update. Getting the word out there in the hopes that it may be seen by the devs.

When did the lags happened? Cause I always noticed that my game lags whenever I alt tabbed out of it in 1.3.0.4.(And this with parallax set to 0 and Frame Skip on.)

Since this update every now and then (have 2 cores, 4 threads) one of them will run at 100 vs the usual 30 percent and the others remain at 10 percent. The game drops to 50 fps vs the usual 60. During this 10 second period I can hear cutting wood or mining is slower then normal. Jumping feels sluggish, and even the enemies move slower. When it ends I can notice how the game is back to normal. Someone passing by wouldn't notice anything but playing it I can. I'm emphasizing actual game play become slightly slower. The fps is not the issue.

I've turned off and on all sorts of settings and combinations until one forum talked about changing Smart Cursor Mode to hold instead of toggle. if I start the game with it set to hold (I can still change it to toggle once in the game) I haven't had any slowdowns. I am quite sure I would have noticed it by now if that setting didn't make a difference because when it happens it doesn't take long to show up, it happens often, and every new game.

Unfortunately the 100 percent cpu usage seems to date back to 2013 with no one getting an answer. So it's near impossible to know if this is the reported multiplayer lag since the .4 update also affecting single player, or a new single player issue since .4 update, or an old issue from 2013. I just starting playing Terraria since the last .3 single player and all was fine.

I'm on a laptop
cpu - i7-4510u
gpu 840m
8 Gb ram
Windows 8.1

I'm playing on an older model computer than you are, but I've never had trouble with the game actually slowing down, so to speak. Single player is totally fine for me, but it's in multiplayer where things really become almost unplayable. A friend and I have sort of postponed our playing time on Terraria because of this. We began a new world and new characters with 1.3, and we're now up to the moon events, pre-Duke. It wasn't until we hit these events (and the 1.3.0.4 patch) that multiplayer and high CPU usage were noticeable issues right away. We've held off playing until it's fixed, or hopefully anyway.

Hi,

Welcome to PC Support Section.

ATTENTION
As of late 1.3 release, the Re-Logic Team and Developers require/urge that you post your System Requirements, Current Installed .NET Framework Versions, and DXDiag Logs. They cannot help fix bugs or technical issues with games if users ignore this matter! Help them before beginning a thread without providing all detailed information.

In order to further assist you, please verify the following information below before proceeding. Please, we remind you that Terraria has certain requirements in order to function properly on your system. If you fail to check these requirements you may encounter errors or issues.

To avoid errors or mistakes, please consider posting your System Specifications. You can obtain this information by Right-Clicking My Computer on your system. You will get basic information about your Processor and RAM. Troubleshooting Your Problem with TerrariaServer.exe
In order to figure out what your problem is with the game, we require that you run the Terraria Server Client (TerrariaServer.exe). This will display any errors or successes on launch. Should there be any errors from the program itself, use the command prompt and copy the error to display it here.
  1. Right click within the Command Prompt.
  2. In the drop-down menu, select Mark.
  3. Once you made a selection, Right Click or Press Enter to copy.
  4. Paste your results in your thread.
If you have trouble with the above instructions, your system might be showing "Not Responding" or your System may need to be rebooted to start clean.

Before proceeding any further, please delete the config.dat file located in your Terraria Folder under My Documents/My Games. Then start Terraria again, this may fix some unexplained issues, but we wish to make sure you are running a nice and clean installation:
  1. Locate My Documents Folder.
  2. Open My Games Folder.
  3. Open Terraria Folder.
  4. Delete Config.dat file from this location.
Verify Terraria's Steam Cache
If your game is unresponsive at times it is recommended you do a Verify Steam Cache with the game provided for Steam (This does not include GOG Version).
  1. Goto My Library on Steam.
  2. Right-Click Terraria and Select Properties.
  3. Goto Local Files Tab.
  4. Now Select Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
If you have trouble with the above instructions, you may be using a different provider or retailer.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My world has corrupted somehow and will not load properly, what can I do?
A: You may have corrupted the world by using modded clients, computer shutdown before the world could complete the save, or system failure within Terraria that caused the problem. You can try attempting to load your world using TEdit (Download).

Q: My game is not launching, or I get errors regarding XNA/.NET Framework!
A: You can attempt to make sure you have all Game Dependencies first, then try attempting this solution:

If you don't feel like sifting through all that, it's basically to do with the framework permissions.

This is how you change the right to use Framework/XNA:
  1. Right-Click the specific directory (Listed Below).
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select the Security Tab
  4. Click on Advanced Option
  5. Select the Owner Tab
  6. Click on the bottom button to Edit.
  7. On this window select the Administrator in the row and make sure to select the Checkboxes below.
  8. Hit Apply and close all the windows.
  9. Try running the game again.
Do the above for all of the following FOLDERS:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_32:
Microsoft.Xna.Framework\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Xact\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL:
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Avatar\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input.Touch\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Net\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Storage\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Video\v4.0_4.0.0.0__842cf8be1de50553

Q: Steam has reported that one (1) file has failed verification and was downloaded?
A: This file is known as the serverconfig.txt file. Originally this file shouldn't be packed with the game as Terraria should create this file automatically on launch if it is missing or out of date. Due to it being changed and updated by server owners, the file will constantly fail the verification process. This has no effect on playing the game, and can be ignored.

Q: I am experiencing low frame rate for Terraria, but the machine passes as recommended?
A: If you are using nVidia Control Panel, you can select Terraria.exe process and change the specifications on how your graphic card handles the game. Follow these instructions:
  1. Open nVidia Control Panel.
  2. Select Manage 3D Settings.
  3. Choose Program Settings Tab.
  4. Select Terraria as current program.
  5. Turn Triple buffering and Vertical sync to On.
  6. Run Terraria and turn Frame Skip to Off.
  7. The application should be running better than your current setup.

Computer specs and information are listed in the original post.

That is great, but you are missing vital information:
  • Single Player / Multiplayer?
  • When does it happen?
  • Screenshots missing showing FPS, and Network speed on Terraria
  • What worlds / characters do it or don't do it.

Odd, I thought I had mentioned that multiplayer is the primary issue just above your post (and has been mentioned on multiple other topics in this forum). It's random, so I can't tell you "when" it happens, just that it's in multiplayer. My FPS is always at 60, network speed is ample enough to handle multiplayer. The only character I've played online with it is my new character. I can't say for my primary.

Remember, this has only occurred as of 1.3.0.4. If my computer specs had changed in that time between 1.3.0.3 and 1.3.0.4, I would have investigated and mentioned it (as that would have been a topic worthy of investigating and an obvious incentive).
