Game Mechanics Make Chester a "light pet" for balance reasons

Pets are supposed to be cosmetic. You are supposed to be able to pick and choose whatever one you like best or fits with your aesthetic.

And then you added chester.

As the first and only useful pet, it immediately puts any player that doesn't use him at a self-imposed disadvantage. Why use any other cosmetic pet when you can have a permanent piggy bank?

Solution? Make chester go in the "light pets" slot. This keeps the current "pets" slot cosmetic, and forces the player to choose between a permanent piggy bank or permanent light.

This opens the door for other "functional pets" (again, in the "light pet" slot) such as a magic portal pet that allows access to the void bag or a "holographic screen" pet that displays time/position? Or a fairy pet that points you in the direction of the nearest ore?

Lastly, chester should be reworked to access the safe instead, and the money trough could be equipable as a pet.

Also that pet from Pumpkin Moon that sometimes flies a large circle around you while emitting rocket boots particles that emit light and reveal caves. I've always used that one before Chester since it does some things that regular light pets can't do, even if it isn't always emitting light.

Maybe it's just me, but in case of doubt I would always take a light pet over a chester, so I'ld probably never use him at all.

Thats your choice, becuase then you get light instead of storage, not both. Some people though may want storage instead of light. At least with this change you have to choose.

Also, broadening the light pet slot to functional pet opens up a lot of design space for functional pets that do all sorts of things. Like how the mount slot can house an attacking mount, a flying mount, a liquid mount, etc.

Yea, in the post i mentioned informational "pets" or a void bag one? Perhaps pets that give accessory-like bonuses?

No, no, ALL sorts of things! Seriously, endless possibilities. With my limited imagination I only came up with pets with weapons that attack things (inb4 it overlaps with summons) so I ended up using the various mounts with extra features as an example.

But let me make an effort to conjure some other ideas...

A pet cube that you can jump on to help you reach places (and doesn't try to murder you in the dark).
Or even better, a bouncy pet that you can bounce on.
A pet that lets you breath underwater.
A pet that can block projectiles.
A pet that runs after items to pick them up for your so you don't have to go to the items yourself.
And more things that I can't imagine right now!
ENDLESS
POSSIBILITIES

Doesn't Chester share the same slots with Money Trough and Piggy Bank?
I personally think I prefer personally prefer Money Trough over any visible pets at all just because it would hinder me when trying to build (lol).

But yeah, now that Chester is here, I think we need a Vanity slot for pets in particular, so that we can have the functionality BUT still have a cute pet following us...
screw it, why don't ALL equipment have vanity slots? This is like Mechanical Minecart all over again. we know it's the best minecart, but that makes the other cute looking novelty ones less likely to be used when people play in Expert. I dunno. Having a vanity slot would be best of both worlds, except it maybe being a way to misdirect other players in PvP being surprised at your hook reach / laser-shooting minecart.

In addition to that though, I just wish Chester didn't share the Piggy Bank Inventory slot... it feels pointless since I normally prefer Money Trough regardless and that doesn't need to be placed (despite taking up 1 space in Main Inventory)

Chester should have used the Safe Storage instead (because there's no summoning item for that as of now), or be his own thing, a new storage. But the latter would make the disparity even higher if people want unique pets without any Vanity slot existing for Equipment...

I do not think "vanity slots" are a good idea for pets/mounts/hooks/minecarts becuase those have unique functionality. For example, using some flying mount but having it look like idk the slime mount? or literally any pet but with the movement of that mourning wood pet? or having the fish cart for increased speed underwater but it looks like some other minecart. Actually, I dont really like vanity armor either. If you want to look like you have certain cosmetics feel free to use that instead of armor. The ability to wear that over your armor and masking the armor you truly have is unfair in multiplayer situations.

I agree that vanity can make multiplayer unfair, I just never had that problem since I don't really play pvp.

This is why big servers normally have rulesets prohibiting that.. I guess. idk. or they just need to make hosts more powerful and be able to limit how other players can use vanity slots or not. seems simple.

With the upcoming release of 1.4.5, I would like to see this issue addressed.

maybe chester can go in a totally new storage pet slot with lots of other new pets

If they added another "storage pet" slot, you could then have up to three creatures following you (edit, not even including summons) that could get in the way of gameplay. Therefore, it is better to simply use the light pet slot.

i know from experience that chester can be really annoying (try starting ooa with chester)

I’d agree with this if light pets were renamed to ‘functional pets‘ or something similar.

that was the plan, yes. Plus, as mentioned, it would open up the door to other useful pets!

Come on everyone! Lets make sure red sees this before the next update!

the thing about chester is that he is a mobile piggy bank. the use of chester is making it so you don't have to constantly resummon the money trough.

I still support the idea of functional pets, though.

I always did think it’s silly that we have a non-vanity item in a vanity slot like that. Kinda makes a lot of the other pets irrelevant and I’m not a fan.
