Biomes & Nature [Sprites] Making Rain More Interesting

Corenality

Terrarian
While rain already makes a few notable changes, I feel that it could use a little more to separate it from any normal day. Here's what I propose to help rain become a more lively event.

  • Rain color is based on the color of the biome water (purple in the corruption, light red in the crimson, etc.). The only exception is the Desert, where it will share it's rain color with the forest biome (dark blue). If it is a blood moon, rain is dark red regardless of biome.
  • Rain will be noticeably less dense in the desert and slightly more dense in the jungle.
  • Dye flowers and fruits on the surface (Marigold, Blueberry Bushes, Sky Blue Flowers, etc.) will grow more frequently.
  • Planted acorns will also grow into trees faster (but you still need to be off screen for this to happen).
  • In the desert, cactus flowers will spawn. They will appear on the arm of a cactus and can be collected using any pickaxe

Corrupt Goldfish (Rain)
2ymwxow.png

Damage: 30
Health: 100
Defense: 6
Description: Basically a walking version of the corrupt goldfish. They walk faster than normal goldfish and are aggressive even out of the water.

Umbrella Zombie
21udcx.png

Location: Surface at Night (Rain)
Damage: 14
Health: 50
Defense: 8
Drops: Umbrella Hat (5%), Shackle (2%), Zombie Arm (0.4%)
Description: A variant of zombies that spawns alongside Rain Coat Zombies and Trench Coat Zombies.

Trench Coat Zombie
2a9nn1g.png

Location: Surface at Night (Rain)
Damage: 17
Health: 52
Defense: 8
Drops: Trench Coat (5%), Shackle (2%), Zombie Arm (0.4%)
Description: A slightly stronger variant of zombies that spawns during the rain.

Scuba Zombie
t9tm4o.png

Location: Surface at Night (Rain)
Damage: 12
Health: 55
Defense: 10
Drops: Scuba Mask (5%), Scuba Suit (5%), Shackle (2%), Zombie Arm (0.4%)
Description: A bulkier zombie variant that spawns during the rain.

Possessed Diver
dzj79k.png

Location: Surface At Night (Rain)
Damage: 55
Health: 300
Defense: 32
Drops: Diving Helmet (2%), Diving Suit (5%), Possessed Diver Banner (0.5%)
Description: A bulkier Possessed Armor that moves through water unhindered (similar to using the Neptune's Shell). They will spawn in place of most Possessed Armors during the rain. When they enter a body of water, their porthole changes to red, making them easier to spot at night. The Helmet has a lower drop chance than the Suit because helmets can also be farmed by killing sharks.

Rain Spirit
280i71z.png

Location: Surface (Rain)
Damage: 50 (Projectile), 70 (Contact)
Health: 200
Defense: 6
Drops: Rain Spirit Banner (0.5%)
Description: They are similar to Wraiths, but can "swim" through both blocks and air. Unlike Wraiths, they can spawn at any time of day as long as it's raining. They fire waterbolt-like projectiles at the player if the spirit is not inside a block and there is no obstacles between her and the player. The projectiles disappear after hitting any surface. They are also very transparent, making them difficult to spot in the rain. However, their body shimmers for a moment every time they fire a projectile, giving away their position.

Frozen Nimbus
206ct5l.png

Location: Snow (Blizzard)
Damage: 55
Health: 320
Defense: 28
Drops: Snowstorm Staff (6.67%), Puffy Wand (1%), Frozen Nimbus Banner (0.5%)
Description: They are similar to Angry Nimbus but are bulkier and move slightly slower. The snow particles they drop have a 20% chance to inflict the Chilled debuff.

Nibbler of Souls
vo6c78.png

Location: Corruption (Rain)
Damage: 72
Health: 50
Defense: 12
Drops: Rotten Chunk (33.33%), Vitamins (1%), Nibbler of Souls Banner (0.5%)
Description: Don't let their name fool you; these guys are deadly. They are fast, hit hard, and usually spawn in packs of 2 or 3. They also have a 30% chance to inflict the Weak debuff for 10 seconds upon contact. However, they have very little health and defense as hardmode enemies, so make sure you take care of them before they get to you. They usually spawn in place of Eaters of Souls. Nibblers have the same drops as Corruptors, so this is a good way to farm for vitamins.

Pus Bulb
2potaq9.png

Location: Crimson (Rain)
Damage: 60 (Contact), 80 (Explosion)
Health: 260
Defense: 8
Drops: Vertebrae (33.33%), Vitamins (1%), Pus Bulb Banner (0.5%)
Description: They behave similarly to Green Jellyfish (except that the air is there ocean). They have a chance to inflict the Weak debuff for 30 seconds upon contact. They usually spawn in place of pre-hardmode Crimson enemies such as Face Monsters or Crimera. Upon death, they explode and release acid, damaging players in a small radius. These are quite common during the rain, so this would be a great way to farm for Vitamins in a Crimson World.

Mossy Gremlin
ws0bci.png

Location: Jungle (Rain)
Damage: 30 (Contact), 50 (Javelin), 70 (Spear)
Health: 250
Defense: 20
Drops: Mossy Spear (2%), Tribal Face Paint (5%), Tribal Spear (5%), Tribal Skirt (5%), Mossy Gremlin Banner (0.5%)
Description: They disguise themselves as bushes in the background of the jungle. They attack when the player gets within a certain radius. They will walk slowly towards the player and throw javelins if the player is too far (similar to Pygmies). Note that the Gremlin has two hitboxes. Touching the Gremlin itself will only deal mediocre damage, but touching any part of the spear will deal a lot more. On top of that, the spear has a 50% chance to cause venom for 8 seconds, while javelins have a 10% chance to cause venom for 4 seconds. Watch where you jump!

Jester
azggll.png

Location: Surface (Blood Moon + Rain)
Damage: 55 (Contact), Varies (Balloon)
Health: 500
Defense: 26
Drops: Jester's Hat (5%), Jester's Shirt (5%), Jester's Pants (5%), Jester Banner (0.5%)
Description: If you're unlucky enough to have rain and a Blood Moon on the same night, you might come across one of these guys. They take the place of most clowns as long as it's raining. Their AI is similar to clowns, but instead of bombs they throw water balloons at a slightly faster rate. Water Balloons explode on contact with a surface and damage players within a small radius. The color of the water in each balloon determines the effect on the player if it connects.
  • Blue (35% chance. Filled with Normal Water. Does no damage and causes the Wet debuff for 8 seconds upon contact.
  • Red (25% chance. Filled with Blood Water. Does 75 damage.
  • Black (10% chance.Makeshift Bomb. Does 110 damage. Does not damage blocks.
  • Yellow (10% chance. Filled with Ichor. Does 75 damage and inflicts Ichor debuff for 8 seconds.
  • Green (10% chance. Filled with Green Flames. Does 75 damage and inflicts Cursed Inferno debuff for 8 seconds.
  • Light Blue (10% chance. Filled with Nanites. Does 75 damage and inflicts Confused debuff for 8 seconds.
Because the chances of having both rain and a Blood Moon is very slim, they do not drop anything worthwhile (unless you're a collector).

Cactus Flower
2n0pj6u.png

Obtained from Cacti (Rain)
Description: Basically a fancier Jungle Rose that can be obtained as soon as it rains.

Monster Banners

Snowstorm Staff
28c2iiw.png

Dropped by Frozen Nimbus
Damage: 34
Mana: 10
Velocity: 16
Use Time: 21 (Fast)
Description: Acts similarly to the Nimbus Rod, but has the unique ability to track an enemy after being deployed. Instead of being used as area-denial, the cloud needs to be aimed at an enemy directly, where it will hover above that enemy and deal residual damage until it dies or 30 seconds have passed. Only one cloud can be out at a time. If used on a boss, it will NOT track it, but rather act like a normal cloud until redeployed or after 30 seconds have passed.

Mossy Spear
2a9nzhe.png

Dropped by Mossy Gremlins
Damage: 34
Velocity: 5.5
Use Time: 32 (Slow)
Description: Does slightly less damage than a Mythril Halberd, while being slower than a pre-hardmode spear. What makes up for it's slow speed is it's long reach (almost as long as the Gungnir) and it's ability to inflict venom on enemies for 6 seconds (30% chance).

Water Cannon
29db9f4.png

Sold by the Cyborg for 25 Gold during the Rain
Damage: 40
Velocity: 10
Use Time: 29 (Average)
Description: The Water Cannon is essentially a weaker grenade launcher, but with a few notable differences. It's fires blobs of ionized water that explode on impact with any surface. Compared to Grenade Launcher projectiles, the blobs move slower through the air and deal less damage. The water itself is infused with nanites, so they also have a 30% chance to inflict the confused debuff upon impact. What makes this gun unique is that it does not use any ammo, but rather needs to be "recharged" by filling it up near a water source. On a full tank it holds 50 charges (which is indicated by the number beside it's icon in the inventory screen, similar to the counter used for others ranged weapons). It takes about 5 seconds to fill up an empty tank. There is also a visual indicator on the cannon itself, where the meter changes every 10 charges as shown below.

Summons a Pet Rain Cloud

Rain Cloud
25jyy6p.gif

Description: This little guy will float behind you and follow you everywhere. Look how cute he is!

Trench Coat

2d82c05.png

Dropped by Trench Coat Zombies
Description: Vanity. Because trench coats are cool.

Tribal Set
2zjan4p.png
4grfia.png

Dropped by Mossy Gremlins
Full Set: Tribal Face Paint, Tribal Spear, Tribal Skirt
Description: More Vanity.

Jester's Set
2d8lxea.png
2hf8dc9.png

Dropped by Jesters
Full Set: Jester's Hat, Jester's Shirt, Jester's Pants
Description: Even more Vanity.

Scuba Gear
154yqmq.png
nl8k5w.png

Dropped by Scuba Zombies
Full Set: Scuba Mask, Scuba Suit (flippers not included)
Description: Did I say we needed more vanity?

Diving Set
2wrj6tj.png

Dropped by Possessed Divers (Both), Sharks (Helmet)
Full Set: Diving Helmet, Diving Suit
Description: The Suit provides 18 defense and an extra 1 1/2 minutes of breathing underwater. When worn with the Diving Helmet, aquatic enemies will not aggro on you when entering bodies of water (though you can still take contact damage and they WILL aggro if you attack them).

Strolling Through the Rain
aoqjhj.png

Sold by the Painter for 1 Gold during the Rain

The Last Laugh
28vpov6.png

Sold by the Painter for 1 Gold during the Rain and a Blood Moon

Also not really rain themed, but certainly helpful for preparing for possible Clowns and Jesters.
Phase Clock
122hgnr.gif

Sold by the Mechanic for 2 Gold during a Blood Moon
Description: It's basically a clock that tells you the phase of the moon. During the day it remains on the "New Moon" phase. Whenever there is a blood moon, the moon indicator changes to red and sends out a constant signal to any wires connected to it. This is particularly helpful for automating house defense against enemies during a Blood Moon.

I feel that since the Jester is so rare it should be buffed a bit and become a bit of a mini-boss. Also, what if it could juggle and throw back any thrown item (dropped item and things like shurikens, throwing knives, I wonder if anyone gets this reference)

Shaco the Jester?

For sure a great suggestion. When re-logic added rain, I thought it would come with huge mechanics, but...I only see nimbuses, flying fishes, ice golems and rainbow slimes, nothing really special (walking fish are cute though).

The rain is going to be much darker so that it doesn't conflict with the Crimson's
also: desert rain should be different from the water color.
Yeah, I was gonna mention that since the desert biome actually exists, then it should have a reasonable rain color as well. If anything it'll be the same color as the forest biome (dark blue).

Added a couple new sprites and concepts.

I'll update the OP with these as soon as I can.

This idea is really great and it makes a lot of sense. Its quite creative and sounds like a really nice idea. Full Support +1

This... This actually makes sense.

I think that walking corrupt goldfish should only spawn on blood moons + rain though, as they naturally spawn on blood moons anyway. ;)

Creative, fun, and I love rain anyway :p
