Decorative bricks and iron bars come to mind. Far from useless in my opinion.

The drop rate is a bit low though.

Hmmmmmmmm, you know you can craft coins to and from its other denominations, right.......? (1 gold --> 100 silver and vice versa, etc.)

You don't need a furnace to convert coins.
