NPCs & Enemies More townsfolk (and other NPCs)

Cibryll

The Destroyer
A few NPCs that I thought would be nice, haha.
(Okay, more than a few.)

Enemy NPCs:
  • Arcane Bat: a rare Dungeon enemy that is like the bats, but uses magic to attack.
  • Cloud Elemental: a cloudy counterpart to the Elemental monsters (maybe in the sky?).
  • Corrupt Squirrel: a Corruption form of the poor Squirrels.
  • Evil Crab: a Blood Moon variant of the Crab.
  • Dry Bones: a variant of the Skeleton that spawns in the Desert areas, perhaps having suffered from dehydration or something.
  • Fire Elemental: a fiery counterpart to the Elementals (maybe in the Underworld?).
  • Flinx: I mean. We have the Snow Flinx, which kinda sounds like there's more variants we're not seeing, so…
  • Gem Golem: rare Underground enemy that drops gems.
  • Giant Gem Golem: rarer Underground enemy that drops more gems.
  • Gold Jellyfish: another Jellyfish variant, maybe rare?
  • Hollow Specter: a rare Underworld enemy that drops a rare item (or two).
  • Horned Beetle: Underground boss that can summon Beetle enemies to aid it.
  • Jiangshi: maybe a rare Graveyard or Solar Eclipse enemy? (Wikipedia link.)
  • Magma Shark: an Underworld variant of the shark, living in the lava.
  • Mummified Sorceress: a Desert boss, probably Hardmode.
  • Rampaging Rose: a Windy Day enemy that's got a floral theme.
  • Sky Dragon: a Space-biome boss, maybe? (At least, found at the same heights as Wyverns and Harpies.)
  • Snow Leopard: a rare Snow biome enemy.
  • Snow Shark: a shark-like enemy that appears during blizzards.
  • Spidercat: half-spider, half-cat, appears underground, probably. (Maybe even summonable to use against enemies?)
  • Spore Hawk: a bird-like enemy that spawns in Surface Glowing Mushroom biomes
  • Storm Hawk: a bird-like enemy that appears during Windy Days and Thunderstorms.
  • Treant: maybe a Forest enemy (or even boss) that drops wood?
  • Vicious Squirrel: a Crimson form of the poor Squirrels.

Town NPCs:
  • Amazon: a strong female NPC that uses melee weapons and sells items for melee specialists.
  • Cryomancer: an NPC that fights enemies with an ice-themed weapon, and tends to give people the cold shoulder? Likes cold areas like the Snow biome.
  • Dhampyr: a half-human, half-vampire NPC who sells items that bestow a small amount of life-steal against enemies (except maybe other players). (Wikipedia link.)
  • Hunter: maybe an elf NPC that hates dwarves (and is hated by the Demolitionist). (Perhaps if named "Cacame", friendly to dwarves and liked by the Demolitionist?) Would fight enemies with a bow and arrows, though different from the Guide's (probably). Sells items for ranged specialists. Maybe give out hunting quests, like "hunt 2 Rainbow Slimes", with good rewards.
  • Lumberjack: an NPC that fights with an axe and sells wood (different kind every day, maybe?).
  • Necromancer: an NPC that summons living dead to protect themselves from enemies. Maybe they're a lich, themselves?
  • Pyromancer: a hotheaded NPC that likes hot areas like the Desert or Underworld and uses a flamethrower or something.
  • Sorceress: a female NPC that sells items for magic specialists (different from the Wizard) and uses magic; likely the formerly Mummified Sorceress reborn or something?
  • Summoner: an NPC that would fight enemies with summoned creatures and whips, and sells stuff for summoners, probably?
  • Survivor: an NPC from a terrible future, perhaps selling futuristic (or post-apocalyptic) equipment and stuff?
  • Town Bird: a town pet
  • Town Harpy: a town pet, too
  • Town Hamster: a town pet as well
  • Town Pixie: another town pet
  • Town Squirrel: yet another town pet
  • Valkyrie: a female NPC who fights with a hammer (probably not Mjollnir though) and likes being on floating islands?

EDIT: added some more, including some enemies.

sounds interesting, but I think, one of the key point with town NPCs is, to have some sort of purpose as well. it sounds great if they're interesting, but if they have no useful funcion as well, some players likely would just think like "so, I built a house, and got this useless NPC move in, instead of an useful one"

although, this one can be largely avoided by alternative approaches, like "furniture-spawned" NPCs who wouldn't take up housing slots.
but if not like that, then they should have a shop that is useful, or some other function that makes them useful.
an NPC doesn't needs to be universally useful for all classes, but they should be at least for one class, preferably more.

like, if you say "sells items for X class" okay, but what items? vanilla items? new, modded items? what sort of items?

also, do you have some ideas how these NPCs would look like? like some sprites? because I would be curious.

That's true… without purpose, they're basically just peasants taking up space that can be better put to use by better NPCs.

The class-themed NPCs (Amazon, Hunter, Sorceress, Summoner) could probably sell vanilla items and a few new items.
The Hunter could additionally give out hunting quests with rewards.
The Lumberjack could sell a different kind of wood every day, perhaps as another means of obtaining Crimson wood in a Corruption world.

The Survivor could sell futuristic or post-apocalyptic stuff.
The Dhampyr would probably require new items… I don't think there are many things that bestow any form of life-steal against enemies other than the Vampire Knives? I don't think we even have vampire bats in any form…?

The Cryomancer, Necromancer, Pyromancer, and Valkyrie… those, I haven't given much thought on, haha. At worst, they just fight monsters and pay taxes.

Though, one of the things I thought of while writing this post was that these NPCs (or most of them, anyway) would require the use of items to spawn (similar to the Town Pets, though more like "invitations" to invite them to the world, or something), but that would probably be making things more complicated.

As for sprites, I… got nothing. ;-;
I have a few ideas, but that's about it - ideas.
The Lumberjack could be bald but have a beard, for instance.
The Amazon could be sensible (unlike most of those that appear in fiction) and wear proper armour.
Or the Necromancer could be a skeletal being wearing a black hooded robe and walking around with a baseball bat as a cane (or, more likely, a staff with a skull at the top).
Or the Valkyrie could have wings, mismatched eyes and auburn hair.
Or the Survivor could wear some sort of gas mask and armour…

Hmm... interesting ideas...
The problem with selling vanilla items (weapons?) is that most of them can be easily crafted anyway, and if they're available in the shop the same time, why would you craft it - or why would you buy it? buying is easier, crafting is cheaper. but while that "alternative way to get it" can work with some items, it doesn't makes that much sense with a bunch of weapons, I think.

the lumberjack is a special exception, because that NPC would be very useful - mostly for builders) but there were like that in some mods, both small mods - I remember a mod like Lumberjack NPC, but dunno if the owner wanna port it to 1.4, and there's also the architect in Alchemist NPCs who sells wood as well.

but most of the other ideas here are kind of lacking...? I mean, they need a purpose. and I mean, because, many of the ideas sounds interesting, and I love town NPCs, and if we're at thinking about new town NPC ideas, yes, it's fun - well, I probably should get the already planned stuff working before adding more new stuff, but I certainly would consider more town NPCs too, if they feel like it's justified why they're there.

town NPCs are so fun.
(well, making their spritesheets is much less fun XD but as far as brainstorming goes on ideas and design, it's pretty cool. and then once the sprite is done, they're very cool - well, also need someone too who can code them XD

  • Town Bird: a town pet
  • Town Harpy: a town pet, too
  • Town Hamster: a town pet as well
  • Town Pixie: another town pet

I'm pretty sure, due to the limits of the engine, there is only a certain amount of town pets possible

  • Why make more bats?
  • Calamity?
  • If there are 3, make 4
  • It's just called a flinx

Um, don't take this the wrong way, but some of these are already in very big or popular mods, and some of this I am ironically adding to my mod add-ons or base mod, like a specter, Dampire [friendly, not town] npc/boss who has something to do with dwarves, something similar to a treant [but not using that name due to legal issues, magma shark of sorts], Jiangshi as a zombie stand in, a beetle boss for a underground mud biome, jellyfish, and possibly a dragon. but all of these are split among mods that are in dev. hell.

some of these are more or less in mods like calamity, consolaria, thorium, and a few others. But mostly Cal in some shape or form similar to this.
