My thoughts on the wait for 1.4.5 and what has happened since it was announced

Terrarian
so, as we all know, 1.4.5 has taken over 2 years to develop. there are multiple circumstances that led to this happening, so i understand why it has taken so long.

the loss of leinfors in particular mustve hurt the team’s productivity and morale for quite a while. i was very very sad to hear the news. he was a kind soul. from what i’ve heard from team members like loki, he was critical in the team’s success. they seem to be doing okay now, but i do truly hope that they are okay. may he rest in peace.

i absolutely adore re-logic and terraria, and i am happy to wait for this update knowing it will probably exceed my expectations. however…
as much as i am willing to wait, it really does sometimes feel like this update is never gonna come out. i know that that is not true, it will come out, and it will be great. its just a mental thing, tbh. it feels like with every state of the game post that says “we’re almost there” i lose the sense of how long its actually been a little more.
i wasnt really active in the community when everyone was waiting for 1.4 (previously 1.3.6) to come out, and that took 3 years, and then it came out and it was fantastic, so i have no doubts that 1.4.5 will share a similar fate. although i expressed my feelings here, i still want re-logic to take their time. it’s best for them to do that if we want quality content.

another thing i want to mention is how stressful the whole process must be for the re-logic developers. the community expectations are extremely high for this update, and the community has expressed their concerns with this update time and time again throughout the SOTG posts. i just want to say this; if anyone at re-logic reads this, know that you are some of the best developers i have ever seen and i hope you’re doing okay. you guys all deserve a long, long break when 1.4.5 releases.

on a less negative note, i am extremely excited for some of the upcoming features;
we’re getting at least 9 new whips and summons are getting their own modifiers, which, as a huge summoner fan, is incredibly exciting. im also anticipating the skyblock seed, and i think that will make for a really really fun playthrough. basically all of the new secret seed stuff that theyre adding will expand the replayability of this game tenfold in my eyes. i think this update will outshine 1.4.4 to me, and 1.4.4 was an absolute joy to play through when it first came out.

thats kinda all i have to say. i love this community, i love this game, and i love its developers. i want everyone that reads this to have a great day. thank you for taking the time to read my yapping about this update.

love yall,
nilzer

It'll come out eventually, I've gotten burned out and back into Terraria more times than I care to recall during the wait for this update.
I just hope there's no crunch or anything like that on the team, it can be easy to feel pressured into hurrying up when you have so many fans waiting for your work, excited to see it, and so on.
Though I will say, with the huge wait and hype, it's felt more like a 1.5 update we're waiting for, than a 1.4.5.

totally agree here on all points

I just think its unfortunate that it was announced so early (along with an expected date). It created an expectation that it would be 'soon', which led to perpetual disappointment.

For every state of the game there is an expectation that the new release date will be announced, because the update is always 'close' and 'not long now' etc. And so there is a sense of disappoint every time when that expectation is not met. It has been 'soon' for 2 years, and that just feels bad. People plan when they're going to do their next playthrough or whatever, and are constantly disappointed.

It's mostly just bad luck that this has happened. The original release date was interrupted, and then the scope of the update was changed. There are *very* good reasons for the delays. But the expectation that it would be 'soon' never really went away - that that's where the actual problem is. I reckon that if people weren't *waiting* for the update, expecting it to be soon, then people would just feel a lot better about it.

there's basically two camps

one camp is waiting on one specific feature that has been teased, or one specific bug that has been fixed for over a year and a half at this point

the other camp is very upset that their game that they got for $5 seven years ago hasn't finished the latest free "final" update yet

Five years ago was the "Journey's End" update, it shouldn't be surprising that updates drag-on

Terraria is a timeless game how it is now anyways, we aren't starved

The members who want to whip Re-Logic into speeding up the update by complaining are really biting the hand that feeds them

I find it increasingly ridiculous how impatient some people are getting for the update, as if they're being robbed or starved. Like brother, you bought this game long before time had a name for $5 and you've played it for longer than it takes the sun to orbit the galaxy; Re-Logic doesn't owe you :red:.

I have decided that I find these people's impatience incredibly funny, and will laugh at them whenever I see them complain while I play a different entry out of the hundreds of games in my Steam Library. I have far more than enough to keep me occupied and I find it patently hilarious to think that these other people apparently don't.

Personally, I have decided that I find these people's impatience incredibly funny, and will laugh at them every time I see them complain while I play some of the hundreds of other games in my Steam Library while I wait for the update to be completed.
It hasn’t even been that long…

i hope they have a few fun collabs like with balatro or cult of the lamb and a few of other games

And now its out, wierd isnt it? Weve been waiting and now, its here.

Oh absolutely not, I was just generally ranting; you're entirely good by my estimation. I have just seen a lot of people across different media platforms lambast Re-Logic for how long the update took to release, "what could possibly be taking so long," "why do they keep adding new useless things like more furniture sets and delaying the update," "another disappointing State of the Game with nothing of substance and a million merch links," etc, as if Re-Logic owes them a debt that they are late to repay, as if Terraria is a live-service MMO with a subscription rather than a silly game they bought 10 years ago for $5.

Your post was exactly the opposite of those people, giving leeway for unfortunate and tragic circumstances and showing understanding and compassion, as well as recognizing how much Re-Logic has added to the game and how long they've worked on it, at no additional cost. As far as I am concerned, you have the patience of a saint.
