Newtonian Gel: Boosts defense proportional to the strength of the attack.

The way I see this working is that when hit with an insanely strong attack, it acts as if you have very high armor, but provides next to no benefit if hit with something weaker. This makes it an interesting choice on whether its worth the accessory slot to you.

This should be done using armor, not a flat damage reduction, so enemies with piercing properly ignore it.

Perhaps for balance, it slowly adjusts over time rather than having preset hard thresholds. So if you are casually playing and occasionally get hit by a bat or something for 20 damage, and then randomly get hit by a boulder for 250, it would treat that as "high" damage and reduce it accordingly. But in a boss fight, where the average damage you are taking is much higher, it is less impactful on anything but the strongest attacks, so you do not get this high defense boost the entire fight.

Newtonian Gel: Boosts defense inversely proportional to the strength of the attack.
Inversely would make it so more damage taken would result in less defense. This would be fine, but the rest of your thread seems to disagree with “inversely.”

I do believe you mean "Non-Newtonian Gel"? In reference to non-Newtonian fluids, such as Oobleck?

I feel like this could very easily become very OP, since the big damage is what gets blocked the least by defense and this reduces that big damage to smaller damage which then gets mostly blocked by defense. I guess it could apply after defense so the effect isn't as strong.
Another question is when it would be obtained, as I imagine this would be a must-have for any tanky build and if obtainable early, it would stay in the loadout for the rest of the game

however, I did mention it adjusts over time. If you are hit will several strong attacks, then it becomes less impactful on those strong attacks. Its based on your recent average damage taken.

So I dont think it would be that OP.

I’d reverse it. Lower damage attacks give high defense while high damage attacks give nothing. Kinda gimmicky, but interesting.

thats.. what normal defense already does, so an accessory that only reduces damage from already weak attacks would do literally nothing and not at all be worth the slot.

What do you mean by recent average damage taken?
Can I just get hit by very low damage attacks constantly so if there are some stronger hits the average is still rather low and more damage gets blocked? The effect of this accessory would be like the beetle shell if I'm understanding correctly, just that it only activates on big hits where it's needed the most and functions as defense instead of damage reduction

My main example are little chip damage stuff like Destroyer lasers getting blocked while the actual body deals proper damage.

Is it Newtonian or Non-Newtonian? The title says Newtonian but the description sounds like it would behave like it’s Non-Newtonian.
The reason I ask is because there are some things I would like to say here but I can’t confidently say them without knowing for sure

since everyone is curious, yes this is obviously inspired by "non-newtonian" gel, but that seems clunky for a name, so newtonian sounds better
