One Terraria: An Introduction & Future Impacts

Isn't the PC map the exact same, but it can also be used as a minimap, can be expanded to cover the full screen (Just like the console version now), and be used as an overlay?o_O I have the feeling people are just trying to find more things to nitpick at this point, sorry to say.

I can confirm that the console map (ps4 in my case) is much easier than the PC map. PS4 map discovers an amount of pixels around your location that will be displayed on the map so that you can see a few steps ahead. PC only discovers where you have been digging. And in the case of lava or shroom biomes (which emit some light) you can see those little caverns aswell but not as much as the console version does.

So does this mean that you are leveling the platforms out? Bc i own the 3ds version and there is some computer stuff i really want on there.

This is what I love about these big-name games, they allow mods and they can contain some cheats. (No sarcasm, hear me out)

You could look up a wiki and spoil the immersion and gameplay.

On PC you could make a mod that skips most of the game, you could get an Inventory Editor, you could get a map editor, you could "save-scam" (I.E, Duplicate items through a rather tedious process) and the owners do NOTHING about it, because #1, they can't, and #2 they don't much care, there's their game, they made it for you, they might be slightly sad for you that you hadn't played it right, but if you want to cheat that's fine, the game is what YOU make it, that's practically the definition of a Sandbox Game, but this is taking it one step further, if you want to cheat, that's on you. We won't encourage to do it, or keep you from doing it.

If you are able to obtain, and want to use, an item that they legit put in the game, good on you.

And I feel once 1.3 comes out, there's going to be so many "paths" to take, and we will see this argument in action, as examples:
  • "Should I use these fishing crates to skip Hardmode Ores, or not?"
  • "Should I use this normal weapon, or this seemingly overpowered one?"
  • "Should I go to (Name of Biome) and grind for (Name of Item) or not?"
  • "Stardust, Nebula, Vortex, or Solar?"
  • "Should I try summoning a bunch of Goblin Armies for the new mini-boss' weapon?"
  • "Should I create a bunch of worlds trying to find the legendary Arkhalis?"
  • "Should I bother with the Solar Eclipse more than I need to?"
  • "Do I want to skip Slime Rain/Blood Moons by hiding underground?"
  • "Do I want a Crimson or Corruption World?" "Melee, Ranged, Magic, or Summoner?"
  • "Do I want to go hunting for reagents to make potions?"

You could play the game over so many times and not reach every path.
You can even set challenges for each playthrough, Examples:
  • Do not die. (Hardcore Mode, or set a different punishment)
  • No Potions.
  • Strictly only 1 or 2 Fighting types (Melee, Ranged, Magic, Summoner)
  • No Summoning Minions.
  • No Wings.
  • Must fight every boss.
  • Fight multiple bosses at once.
  • Do not let any NPC die, except the Guide for WOF.
  • Do not use the Mechanic or her items.
  • Do not use the Goblin Tinkerer for Reforges or Combining Accessories
  • Abolish the Crimson/Corruption
  • Abolish the Hallow
  • Fully turn the world with Corruption or Crimson.
  • Destroy the world with explosives.
  • Must beat every boss first try.
  • Any craftable item, you cannot recieve from chests. (But accessories and Magic Mirrors and things like that are alright)

There's nothing to keep you from cheating, it is what you make it, if you want to be a good player and do it legit, that's cool, but if you want to cheat, you did it to yourself.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to find. Is there another thread where the conversation is what console players are going to do as soon as 1.3 gets to us?

I've put my old beetle armor in my safe so that I'll have it ready whenever my dragon armor becomes paper, and I used up all my Ocram summons to get the last bits from him I wanted, but I don't really know what else to set up for. Things like the Goblin Army now having a mini-boss drop make me want to farm for standards, and I don't know what else is out there that I could/should also prep for.

In my opinion the game is better when fully experienced for yourself, I won't spoil the game for you.

My cousin just started playing Terraria recently and he asks me for advice on what EXACTLY to do, but he looked up most of the game, which, as I stated before, I believe ruins the immersion, half of the fun, and experience of the game.

I looked up the recipes, and on rare occasions drops for things I know existed, but rarely for guides on how to progress.

Yes, and that's ok IMO, but it's usually like, knowing every boss, how to summon them, how to beat them, knowing the power of every enemy, knowing all about the Hallow before hardmode... Etc.

It is easier (time efficient) for the Devs to just take them out

I can assure you, if time/ease was the obstacle, it wouldn't be a problem. Its a matter of these elements not fitting our vision of the game or conforming to our standards. If anything, the easiest solution is to just leave them in. So that doesn't really hold up too much. Its also why the ones which potentially fit, but don't match our standards, are being tabled for further investigation! ;)

Think about it; if we were looking for the easy way out, why would we have a company completely recode the Console version of the game from scratch to improve the quality of the game, when we already had a functioning version of the game present on Console? We could have just kept riding that option, but that's not how we roll. :D

And Ocram will be gone on XBox one, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, because the Moon Lord is now the Final Boss

and Tizona will be a.. Chlorophyte CLAYMORE?! this is the worst part of Terraria Console

Can't wait to use the new dyes and Dev Sets.

My favourite Dev Sets are (in order of how much I like them): Arkhalis', Crowno's, Loki's, Jim's, Will's, D-Town's, Lazure, Leinfors', Aaron's, Red's, Skiphs', (Yoraiz0r's, Cenx's, I'm not so much in favour of the female ones, as I always have a male Terrarian)

I also love using Yoraiz0r's Spell on my characters, it kinda shows my evil side.

I would also like to point out, I like all the developers, I'm not putting you lower than another just based on your Vanity Set. ;)

Pretty good news if you ask me. Personally, I've never seen the content exclusive features up to par with the rest of the stuff the game has to offer, so I felt a change was necessary somewhere down the road and I think this was the best, least time consuming choice.

One Terraria

"One Terraria" - For too long, we have felt that the Terraria community was too "fragmented", driven by some pretty large content differences between the various versions. One of the key goals of the Console & Mobile rewrite is to bridge that gap and bring everyone together into a more unified experience. What does that mean, exactly?
  • Bringing the other versions more in-line with the expectations of the core PC version in regards to gameplay and visuals - only deviating where appropriate or needed.
  • Narrowing - or even potentially eliminating - the "update gap" between PC updates and when these are rolled out to Console (and Mobile).
  • Once that is in place, even exploring more "out there" ideas like crossplay or content sharing that such parity could potentially allow (no promises here - just sharing the thinking! ;) )

So, what does this mean in practical terms? That we have done all that we can to make what you will receive as close as possible to the PC Terraria 1.3 experience. It also means that the teams have a pretty aggressive update plan moving forward with the goal of fully catching Console (and eventually, Mobile) up to PC... and then closely coordinating update development once we are at parity to greatly shrink or even remove the "update gap" altogether. Once we get all of that together, gone should be the days of Console and Mobile players getting content up to a year later - if all goes to plan.

We suspect that will be music to your ears - and it certainly is to ours! We are looking forward to sharing the details of that plan once we get through the Console 1.3 launch window. That said, this plan has other implications, so we encourage you to read up on those below. Taken together, we are confident that this will put Terraria and the community in a much better place a year from now than today - and today is pretty good already.

Console Exclusives

Several of you asked along the way what would come of the exclusive content that was originally released for console Terraria at launch in 2013. As we noted in response, the teams were going to take a close look at all of that content and decide what the best path forward would be here. Below, you will find the end results of that review. We fully expect that this will be met with a mixed reaction, so we want to share the "why" and logic behind this decision up front. In the end, we feel this will be a small bit of short term pain for some... with some longer term benefits for everyone.

Most of the current "exclusive" content in Console will be greatly changed or phased out altogether. (Details Below)

Why?
  • When this content was added to the game, things were very different. PC development had ceased for a time, and this was all "endgame" content for everyone to interact with and continue their adventure.
  • Since that time, things have obviously greatly changed for Terraria and the game's development. Quite simply, the game has outgrown the content itself and even the need for there to be exclusives for console.
  • The content itself is obsolete and has never fit with the vision for Terraria. What was endgame gear is now a mix of vanity and mid-game gear that is more of a stopgap/alternate to Chlorophyte that is simply not needed in the game anymore.
  • These tweaks make possible that the remaining content may see its way onto PC, finally yielding a true "One Terraria" experience once the "catch up" effort is completed.

What is changing?
  • Current Console Exclusive armors will remain in game, but will be converted to vanity sets. These will be available via the Traveling Merchant's rotating inventory.
    • Currently-owned sets will still exist, but will automatically be changed to Vanity.
  • Current Console Exclusive weapons will be removed from the game entirely.
    • Currently-owned weapons will be automatically replaced with similar gear at the Chlorophyte tier (i.e. Tonbogiris will be replaced with Chlorophyte Partisans)
    • Sharanga will be replaced with Hellwing Bow and Spectral Arrows/Vulcan Bolts with Hellfire/Chlorophyte arrows, respectively
  • Console-Exclusive mobs will be removed in their entirety.
    • Most of these were reskins/recolors that do not fit into vision and balance of the game. There is a chance that a few of the more interesting will be revisited at a later date.
  • Console Vanity will be removed from the game, with the exception of the Horned God set. This will be added to the Traveling Merchant's inventory.
  • Sparkly Wings will be removed from the game
    • Currently-owned Sparkly Wings will be replaced by Cenx's Wings.
  • Console-exclusive Pets will be removed from the game
    • Currently-owned exclusive pets will be replaced with a gold bunny each. Feel free to sell him for 10g or put it in your very own bunny cage to replace that pet companionship.
    • There is a chance that a few of these will be revisited at a later date and re-added to the game with revamped art and/or AI.

These changes will also apply to the Mobile version of Terraria. **We have not yet discussed the Mobile Exclusive Content. We do, however, understand that the Mobile experience is a different and unique one - so we would ask that no one attempt to draw any premature conclusions on what will happen there based on what our decisions were here. :)

What about Ocram?
You will have noticed that Ocram was missing from our list above. Well, to be honest, we have never felt Ocram was a good fit or a really engaging boss fight. So, we are afraid that Ocram will be leaving us once the Terraria Console 1.3 update arrives.

Ocram Changes

  • Ocram and his related mobs and summons will be removed from the game.
  • Ocram Mask and Trophy will remain in the game as "legacy" items. Any that exist at the update will remain, but there will be no further way to obtain them in game once the update arrives.
  • Souls of Blight will be removed from the game
  • Players will receive 5g for each Soul of Blight owned (the current sell price of Souls of Blight)

Whew, that was a lot to cover! We are sure that you all have tons of questions, and we will seek to answer them as we can. No, we do not have an exact date to give you right this second other than to say a TON of progress has been made and the team is hopeful to have something more concrete to share soon. The Pipeworks team is focused on the last few things before they can submit - squashing the final list of bugs and working on Split Screen Multiplayer performance optimization. Once those are wrapped up, they should be ready to submit. The goal remains to reach submission before the end of Q3, but we will not submit before the game is ready. We will absolutely let you know the instant submission occurs or if a bit more time will be needed.

Thanks for all of your support along this long and winding journey to Console and Mobile 1.3. We know it has required your patience, but we are confident that the end result will be well worth the wait!
honestly I liked ocram and i just hope he gets a reboot in a further update such as 1.3.9

Most large games (especially Terraria) don't do #.#.9 updates, they usually just go to #.#.0 (second digit is +1 from previous number, for example, instead of 1.1.9, they would release 1.2.0) Any time they round up the second number and skip a few in the last position, that's called a Major Release, which usually contains much more content than a minor release (#.#.1 - #.#.9) It's a bit hard to explain...

Also, I don't think 1.3 went 1.3, 1.3.0.1, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.4, 1.3.5, I think it skipped to 1.3.5, which is another "Major Release" point, it contained the Dungeon Defenders 2 Crossover Content.

Addition/Edit:

1.3.4 was the Crossover, not 1.3.5, 1.3.0.1 - 1.3.5 does not skip, as I said it did, however, it does go from 1.3.0.8 to 1.3.1, and from 1.3.1.1 to 1.3.2, with notable updates. https://terraria.wiki.gg/Desktop_Version_history

Nope, doesn't look like any skips between 1.3.0 and 1.3.5. Skipped from 1.2.4 to 1.3 though.

They will be cool. It'll be nice when nobody uses red's wings anymore
