PC Other players are invisible in multiplayer

My friend and I are returning to this game after taking a short break since December. I tried to host the world as usual through steam and I can't see his character. I can see his projectiles fired but I just can't see him or his icon on the map. He's tried hosting the world and he can see me but I still can't see him. Bosses don't seem to acknowledge him either. We've both verified files, reinstalled the game, I've had him join through IP instead of steam, we've tried different worlds and characters, nothing seems to work. Both of our internet connections are very good (~650Mbps ethernet upload and download). We both use the most recent steam version completely unmodded.

Hey @Leerybear,

There are several legitimate reasons why a player may be invisible and/or not targeted by enemies, for example through the use of Invisibility Potions or Shroomite Armor. Was he using either of these?
