In the spirit of the personality test that takes place at the start of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, I've taken the time to construct a little quiz that is designed to determine which Terraria class is the most suited for your attitude and playstyle. Don't think too hard about your answers and don't take your results too seriously, either. While it is in the form of a silly personality test, I've done my best to include perspectives on what Terraria's classes really are. Hopefully it will be as informative as it is entertaining.

Class summaries

Melee is regarded as the easiest class to play. Low maintenance, decent defenses, and very straightforward playstyle. It is also the class that is the most vulnerable to taking damage in the first place, which necessitates the high defenses of most melee armors. Melee answers emphasize fairness and simplicity.

Ranged is currently the strongest class in battle. They deal consistent damage at long range, and are often the highest single-target DPS available in their tier. Rangers don't need to reload unless they fail to plan ahead. Probably the easiest class to win the game with. Ranged answers emphasize effectiveness and practicality.

Magic is the most challenging class, and not necessarily the most rewarding. For mages, the increased challenge is its own reward. Their stamina is poor and they must rely on subversive techniques to tilt the playing field in their favor. They might be a bit masochistic, too. Magic answers emphasize skill, variety, and self-imposed difficulty.

Summoning is the least specialized class, and will likely have all sorts of weapons on their hotbar. You might have thought of them as a class that likes being in control, but the opposite is true. Summoners must place a great deal of trust into their minions, which contribute a large percentage of their combat effectiveness. As the class is balanced around both the summoner and minions attacking at the same time, one should expect a summon-only approach to be rather weak. Summoning answers emphasize teamwork, duality, and faith.

Thank you all for taking my test! I am a little curious about the answers you put down for each question, and I’m also a bit concerned about people getting zero points towards summoner—I know the class is not for everyone, but I hope that this trend wasn’t due to poor phrasing on my part.

Thank you all for taking my test! I am a little curious about the answers you put down for each question...

Well, you asked for it!

1 Anything goes
2 A warhammer
3 Good replayability
4 The flavor I usually get (stracciatella!)
5 Do my share
6 Send your best biologists and linguists
7 Dog
8 What's in the fridge - I'm an old fart, I cook food like grown-ups do.
9 How much I enjoy doing it
10 Ignore the bully
11 Fire, ice, and lightning spells

I got 3 Melee, 3 Ranged, 3 Magic and 2 Summoner. Well...

I am mostly a Ranger anyway with a Melee backup weapon.

I don't know why, but this quiz seams to shade a little negative light on melee.
I tried to phrase each answer in a positive light with as little bias as possible. Objectively, there are good and bad things to say about each class.

Melee: straightforward and honest, but uncreative
Ranged: efficient, but a bit of a tryhard
Magic: creative, but inefficient
Summon: cooperative, but naive

I tried to leave as much of it to your own interpretations as I could.

1-- I dunno, I mostly would want to have fun? I guess that's "Anything Goes"
2-- Probably a rapier. It's simple and elegant, though it's rather unimpressive and ineffective overall. Tbh, I'd choose the dagger if I could enchant it to do cool stuff :p
3-- Strategy. That or the ability to create my own content.
4-- Usual flavour (or flavours). I'm generally happy being comfortable.
5-- ...I think it'd depend heavily on how much I'm feeling tolerant towards them and how much I'm interested in the project as a whole. I might do the whole thing and make sure the teacher knows, or I might just do my half and say "look, I bugged them repeatedly, not my fault".
6-- Are the aliens acting hostile? Can we communicate with them? If not hostile and we can communicate, sending a message of peace would be the best option. If no communication, leave them to make the first move.
7-- Reptile. Always wanted a pet snek.
8-- Instant noodles, probably. I prefer to save my effort for desserts :D
9-- How much I enjoy doing it. If I like doing my job, I'll never work a day in my life. Though, I could see myself prioritizing helping others.
10-- I'm not all that confrontational, but I will get problems solved. I'll let the teacher know, and turn the other cheek to the bully.
11-- Strategic stuff. So probably the healing/reflection stuff, from the list. With a more free set of options, I'd do well with metamagic, space and/or time.

So, tallying:
1: Melee. 2: Melee. 3: Magic. 4: Melee. 5: Magic/Ranged/Summon. 6: Melee/Summon. 7: Magic. 8: Melee. 9: Melee/Summon. 10: Ranged/Summon. 11: Summon.

Net: 6 Melee, 2 Ranged, 3 Magic, 5 Summon.

Compare: I basically always play magic/summon in Terraria, though I don't restrict myself when another option might work better. However, I think my Terraria habits are different from other RPG habits, and are in turn different from my real life habits. I have a big flashy-ness streak in fantasy, one coupled with a strong sense of practicality. In Terraria, these intertwine rather well- summoning massive dragons, spewing golden ichor everywhere, spamming destructive rings of watery death, calling meteors from the sky- all of them are extremely practical in many situations as well as flashy. However, in other RPGs where flashiness and practicality don't combine as well, I tend towards practicality and pacifism. It's more convenient to spam simple balls of fire than dramatically incinerate masses of foes. It's easier to snipe-assassinate from the other side of the building than it is to rain meteors and cause wanton destruction. It's more useful to befriend than to destroy.

Conclusion: My tally fits relatively well when practicality and flashiness compete, but I feel they synergize in Terraria more than they conflict, and so I play to the flashy side since it's so fun.

Hmm I'll give this a shot
1)Anything goes since I don't really like playing Basketball I couldn't care less in the situation

2)hmm of the options a dagger is the most practical in a fantasy setting Rapiers are too flashy and ineffective and the other weapons are too situational and would only be used if you know you are going up against certain enemy forces they counter. If forced between side arms and specialty equipment I'll go with the least detrimental. Real primary weapons among melee weapons were mostly polearms with the exception of great swords, nearly all other swords were side arms more or less analogous in combat to a pistol in terms of modern combat. If you went into battle with only a sword that was pretty much suicide in the same way handguns are in a rifle setting you are out ranged and out powered so if you can somehow against all odds win you must be a god tier badass. That is where the trope of a swordsman or gunslinger comes from.

3) replayability relative to cost with money being scarce how you spend it is critical

4)The flavor I usually get. If I have been there more than a few times I'll have figured out my favorite already and with junk food you need to optimize enjoyment

5)Of the options I would feel the need to look for them in person first so I have to go with that but in reality I would also be sending an email describing the situation to the teacher.

6) cautiously allow the aliens the first move but with a plan of action if they do not move within a reasonable time frame. Since any species technologically advanced enough to reach us could wipe us out in an instant since the ability to launch interstellar missions implies space based manufacturing capabilities. They would have no shortage or resources at their disposal so whatever objectives they have must be something related to a service provided by the biosphere or curiosity. Given the difference in position an aggressive approach would be suicide and survival is paramount. Any species able to readily reach us in the time it has taken for light signals of our civilization to reach them is going to be a K 2 or greater on the Kardashev scale or very close to it. As such annihilating our planet or even solar system if they were so inclined would be completely trivial if they were so inclined no army forces or initial investment needed beyond firing a significant amount of one of their Dyson swarms total energy output at us without us being able to plausibly respond or even recignize the threat.

7)if forced to pick a pet it would have to be the fish I don't have the time or resources to afford to care for any of the other animals.

8) leftovers or if none something simple made up from whatever is lying around the less effort and money needed the better but instant food should be avoided for health reasons

9)How useful it is to society the market system built around maximizing short term profits is arguably the root cause of climate change, loss of biodiversity and in general gross wealth inequality. Growth for the sake of growth the current economic model is precisely the definition of cancer and the laws of physics prohibit continued exponential growth within a closed or finite system.

10) Ideally do everything but confronting the bully since research supports the idea that bullying is driven by a desire to look for a reaction in the hopes of feeling better about themselves by putting others down in their place. If forced to pick a single choice in isolation the first choice is the most likely to succeed among all incomplete solutions.

11) Lightning/electricity and or light will always win my preference since electromagnetism has probably the greatest potential as it interacts with one of the fundamental forces that govern our universe directly.

Tallying up what my answer's best fit with I get
1)melee
2)ranged
3)ranged
4)melee
5)melee
6)summon
7)melee
8)ranged
9)summon
10)melee
11)melee

In total 6 Melee 3 Ranged 2 Summon 0 Magic
Actually surprisingly fairly accurate as I aim for what is the most logical and practical choices whenever possible. I am a bit of a pessimist when it comes to human nature in general I have never been a hyper specialist in Terraria even when I spec down a particular class my two main characters are a postgame general use Melee character with a decent summon presence Solar armor (Fishron Wings,(swapped out for Fire Gauntlets, Mech Glove(when the on fire debuff is basically useless), Warrior Emblem, Shiny Stone, Star Veil or frozen Shell as needed namely in boss battles/events), Ankh Shield, Celestial Shell, Worm Scarf, OOA sentry accessory(swapped out for the fully upgraded money accesory, Fire Gauntlets Lava Waders and or Papyrus Scarab all warding, + Sharpening Station Flask of Ichor and Bewitching Table Well fed and whatever potion buffs I've got.
My Expert mode only character is a bit more specialized as ranged but she also still carries a solar eruption since there are no bullets to hurt enemies through walls. (I use the shiny stone as a primary here since it synergizes well with the Shroomite set bonus but otherwise the general use ones are similar to the melee loadout but with the melee and summon items swapped out for well ranged stuff (Magic Quiver and Sniper scope for those interested
