Plagiarism on Youtube+Discord server

Hi,

I recently found out that someone is making a 3D version of the game, same sounds, "same" sprites, same monsters, same functionalities, a literal copy of the 2D game in 3D.

for that the person asks for you to subscribe his youtube channel, so u can get a title in the discord channel, where he posts the news about development.

it turns out that the launch of a beta version should have happened months ago, and since then he keeps postponing the date, something tells me that he wants people to stay paying the subscription for longer, because that way he has more profit without even launching anything.

he's really making progress on adapting the game, with videos showing it all, but the lack of cordiality on discord server has left me wondering about the nature of this developer. There is a channel simply dedicated to bullying a user who possibly disagreed with a member of the moderation in the general chat.

I would really like a return to know if this project really has permission to do this, I will post the link to the youtube and discord channels.

Just seeing this.

He absolutely does not have permission to do this - and he has been informed as much directly.

This raises all sorts of copyright and trademark issues - he clearly has talent and should focus his time and talents on making his own original title rather than copying Terraria.

Oh wow . . . I remember seeing this thumbnail on YT, but I paid it no attention because I thought it was just some goofy animation.

The fact that it's an actual attempt to recreate the game in 3D and that the developer is making money off of it is just wild.

The developer clearly has talent, and I can only hope they join a team or start their own, but this definitely isn't the way to go about it.

It appears he is handing out alpha/beta access in exchange for paid sponsorships.

This adds an additional concern.

We love supporting up and coming developers - but we also have to watch after our own intellectual property. We treat customers and partners with respect and don’t try to be “those people” that plague the industry - but we have to draw some lines.

Just wanted to make that clear since in my research there still appears to be some ambiguity.

Welp time for a lawsuit if he is not listening

Would I be allowed to make a video on the topic for YouTube?

This is super blatant plagiarism, so blatant that it is like saying the whole alphabet of swear words to Re-Logic's employees.
Making a paid subscription for a beta and then postponing it for months is borderline scam, this is similar to paying for internet that never comes.
And the microtransactions on a plagiat of a game without microtransactions are next level arrogance.
That the maker does not listen to warnings of Re-Logic Officials is for me and for possibly many more the point on the lower i in terms of bad things and blatancy.
Due to that English is for me 3rd language I don't know better rule compliant terms to describe that behavior.

If that fan game maker has gotten from Re-Logic permission to do that and the fan game was planned to be free or on initial buy at least much less expensive than the actual game (max 50 cents) and without any microtransactions, then it could have been OK, like Impostor 🪓 📮 said. I hope Redigit is informed about that ASAP to make the for him necessary next steps.

Also additional info:
  1. 100% of the channel's content is the plagiat of Terraria
  2. The most recent video is a QB fight (I am not sure if I would break the "No piracy / plagiarism promotion" rule if I post here the video link)
  3. In the most recent video they also stole the Calamity Mod Boss Bar (it shows the % of HP left, same style, same font)

Very shady

I would rather you not. Ultimately this is a private matter.

I don’t have any issues with fangames, but paid fangames are blatantly bad in practice. They profit off of other Devs’ work. I’m glad this has attention brought to it, especially since I thought the 3D BoC fight from this guy was just an animation

To be clear, legally speaking “but it’s a free fangame” does not exempt anyone from copyright or trademark issues. It is solely up to the rights holder as to if they feel it’s a big enough issue to address.

Again, we love new devs chasing their dreams with their own ideas. Wish these folks would do that instead of taking our IP and using the value of our franchise to gain publicity they would not otherwise have.

Somewhat tongue in cheek joke here - but I can imagine what Microsoft would do if someone legitimately tried to make a 2D minecraft copy (all the way down to the same enemies and items and concepts and more.). Sandbox games share some common elements - but there are very clear parts of each of them that are far from common (eg. Specific items or enemies or characters etc).

Anyway, will see what’s up I suppose. No need for anyone to get all up in arms haha. I more just wanted to provide clarification since I hadn’t seen this thread before. :)

Understood then. I know some free fangames in the past got copyrighted like that (such as AM2R), and I know that companies have complete copyright control over their IPs, but I just wanted to say that a paid fangame is far worse than a free one. I respect any choices ReLogic makes with their own IP though.

I definitely think both Microsoft and Mojang would be livid if someone stole Minecraft assets, MC is Microsoft’s golden goose so they’d definitely get upset. Games like SurvivalCraft that don’t take any assets but have pretty much the same gameplay seem to be safe though from then.

And none offense taken, thank you for giving me the extra context on this :)
