I was thinking about making a simple RPG when I finish my epic Terraria mod if I ever learn real coding, probably won’t be the greatest game ever, probably would put it on Steam for at most 10 bucks (Terraria’s price or less)
Main inspirations: @Starbringer was going to make an RPG about Caleb on Scratch, and had character sign ups. I think that might have been how I met them. I was mostly gonna make this game lightly based off of it.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
You can’t say that the game’s battle gimmicks aren’t fun and it’s soundtracks aren’t bangers
Superguard my beloved
Super Mario RPG
The first Paper Mario game was originally gonna be a sequel to this game so why not mention it
Pokemon
Mostly the attack and special attack mechanics
It will likely be a simple animation style, with most characters’ idle and walking animations having 2 or 4 frames, so the spritesheets won’t be super huge.
There will likely be many party members, (at least 10) with most of them having out-of-battle abilities required for progression and reaching new places. The party will have 5 spaces, along with a “supporter slot,” a sixth character that provides a small passive bonus unique to each character instead of battling.
Items will have three forms: limited-time use items, like heals and damaging items; trinkets, which work like Terraria accessories and TTYD badges, giving passive effects; and weapons, which can be equipped and add special moves to your selection. Different characters benefit more from different weapons.
Several trinkets have lesser effects in the support slot, but give said minor effect to all 5 fighters.
Main battle mechanics:
Main stats
HP (obvious)
SP (Special points)
Used for special attacks and sometimes other things.
UP (Ultra points)
Not really a stat, as it can’t be increased by leveling up, and is earned by doing other attacks. Slowly fills like the TTYD star points.
Defense
Reduces damage from physical attacks, as well as minority reducing damage from special attacks.
Attack power
Increase damage of attacks and special attacks.
Attacks
Normal attacks
Mostly physical attacks. Some characters might have magic ones, but otherwise, they’re just basic attacks. All attacks, including special and ultra, have an action command to do more damage, like in TTYD.
Special attacks
Attacks costing SP. (Special points) most are attacks with gimmicks, like inflicting an effect or piercing defense.
Ultra attacks
Very strong attack that is different for every character. Use all your ultra points at the moment, and deal more damage depending on how much was used.
Guard
Pressing Space will make the character guard an attack if time right, reducing damage taken.
Parry
Pressing W within a very slim window will completely block an attack, taking no damage and reflecting 25% of the damage back to the enemy.
Effects
Work like buffs and debuffs in Terraria and TTYD, either helping or inhibiting the victim, sometimes both.
Burning
Pretty basic, take one damage every turn. More stacks do more damage each turn. Cannot stack from separate instances, but several stacks can be inflicted at once. Is cured by water/ice attacks.
Poison
Basically works like burning, dealing 1 damage every turn, with the same stacking rules.
Frozen
Pretty obvious, you can’t do anything. Doesn’t stack. Is cured by fire attacks.
Paralyzed
Like frozen, but you can still use items, and it isn’t cured by fire.
Lycanthropy
A very unique effect. You can’t control the afflicted character, meaning it will use basic attacks at random, with the upside of dealing and extra 25% damage. Doesn’t stack. Also makes the character use a unique spritesheet.
It’s not common, and works differently on enemies. Also inflicted by two planned party members. Do I even need to say who it is?
For enemies, it gives the same damage increase, but makes said enemy sometimes attack other enemies. Gives the enemy a slight shaking effect so I don’t have to make separate sprites for every enemy.
Rage
Every stack of rage gives +25% damage, stacking additively. For example, 8 stacks will increase damage by 200%, basically doing triple damage.
At least one stack gives the character a separate spritesheet, and ten gives another. Both characters and enemies gain a slight red hue.
Will probably think of more
Story summary
Like @Starbringer ‘s idea for Caleb RPG, the party members are corrupted by an evil figure before being freed and joining your team once you defeat them.
Actual prologue:
Long ago, an unnamed deity created a peaceful universe consisting of a small chain of realms on a flat oceanic plane. Despite its small size, it was peaceful and beautiful. A few millenniums after the deity created life, an evil spirit from somewhere came and started brainwashing many residents of the realms. As a feeble attempt at rebellion, the deity summoned several characters that seemed important and powerful from nearby universes. Unfortunately, said characters were soon corrupted. The only character who doesn’t get corrupted is Caleb Starbringer, who wakes up on a beach, and takes the role of the first party member. Their reaper friend (@Starbringer don’t berate me if I got your lore wrong)
guides them through this world, working like Goombella from TTYD, giving info on enemies, locations, and overworld NPCs.
Another planned part is platformer levels, which can only be entered if the respective characters required have joined you.
Example: you could be going through an area and see a small tile with a TWi icon and a silhouette. You continue the normal path, and obtain a new character. You come back and the silhouette is now filled with that character’s icon, now allowing entry to the platformer level.
Most platformer levels are just standard “reach the end” levels, but some can function differently, like a “kill all enemies” room or a pizza tower style level, where you hit a trigger and rush to the beginning of the level.
