Game Mechanics Remove mediumcore from first playthrough options

Terrarian
mediumcore feels extremely out of place, and is mostly a holdover from the earliest terraria versions where the game's design wasn't fully formed. this isn't necessarily an issue - it can make for a fun, memey kind of challenge for experienced players - but what i think is a huge issue is its presence in character creation, presented as a normal option alongside journey mode and classic mode. players coming in blind can assume it's a difficulty option meant to be played as much as classic difficulty (when the actual thing to pick if they want that is expert mode). it's more like one of the jokey secret seeds than an option most players are expected to pick.

i think the game would be much better for new players if mediumcore was removed from the character creation menu and made into a, secret seed unlockable, or cheat code - any option that's more out-of-the-way and less likely to trap new players.

How is mediumcore a trap? When creating a new character you have to go out of your way to choose it, same as you would hardcore, and it tells you exactly what's going to happen if you select it. If you don't like dropping your items on death, you store your items in a chest and just make a softcore character afterwards instead since your world is different from your character.

I understand that not everyone enjoys it, but saying that it should be somehow hidden from character creation or be a world seed effect while making no mention of hiding hardcore as a selection seems a little extreme.

my reasoning is i don't think the implications of that choice are clear on character creation. lots of players go "oh, that's how it works in minecraft, so i'll just pick the same thing here" - but the dynamic of losing your items every death is very different in terraria. items in terraria are hard to replace, the game's designed in a way where you're expected to die pretty often, and losing every carried item can mean setting you back tens of hours of gameplay. you might softlock yourself by losing every viable weapon late-game, where enemies do so much more damage that going out with starting weapons and no armor just isn't doable for most players. the game isn't designed for mediumcore to work for a normal playthrough.

does a new player understand they're picking a harder difficulty? of course. does the game communicate what they're actually getting into by picking it? not nearly enough.

Maybe a prompt saying something like: "This game difficulty is NOT recommended for new players, are you sure you want to continue on Mediumcore?" YES - NO ... would do the trick!
