Game Mechanics Sheet Music: a way to play the piano

Aceplante

Official Terrarian
People have been asking for a way to play the piano for years now, and I think I have a solution! The other instruments are all items and therefore can be easily played simply by holding them, but that would obviously not work for the piano since it needs to be placed into the world. All except one. There is already another instrument that is placed in the world, and yet can be played!

And that item is the drum set. Rather than adding some sort of complicated UI, or requiring keybinds, what if the pianos worked similarly to that, and required a new "Sheet Music" item to play.

There could also be other variants of the sheet music that added sustain, chord harmony, or other effects to played notes, but changing the notes themselves would require another piano type, perhaps an electric keyboard dropped from the marians? Or perhaps an organ from the pirates?

The ideal scenario would just be an onscreen keyboard you can press different keys on your keyboard to play, but ui work has always been notoriously difficult in terraria and this is probably the next best thing.

That is what some other games do but I specifically said I dont think that would be a good way to go about it. It wouldn't really fit into terraria in my opinion. Plus, what about console players?

Or mobile players.

I mean, it always feels disappointing for me as a piano player when I can't just learn and play songs in games. Really would rather be able to play whatever songs I want than to have presets.

Another option is to do what Core Keeper did, which is to have both the ui and the music sheets alike. That way everyone can do something that sounds good and you can also make something up if you wish.

Mobile is fine with an onscreen keyboard, by the way. Touchscreen can absolutely handle that. Controller already is at a huge disadvantage with much of terraria (look at building) so that's not really an issue this suggestion would add.

Just create a terraria sponsored midi keyboard that players can buy. It can be DLC. /j

But honestly I would totally buy a terraria midi keyboard lol

Maybe, but better to solve problems than to make more.

Nice. And Core Keeper was my idea of what mobile might look like.

The ui already changes depending on your input method. What problem is this supposedly creating that couldn't be addressed with that?

Organ left by pirates? Great idea!
