Items solution: reaver shark.

let's buff the reaver shark to 100 pickaxe power, but make it only catchable with a high enough fishing power (angler armor, tackle bag, sitting duck fishing rod) this would balance a lot. also, I made a suggestion on a different thread, so here it is, at its own glory: the mawler shark: a prehardmode drill, like the sawtoothed shark is the only prehardmode chainsaw. both the reaver and mawler would have 100 pickax power.

Imo it should either be changed back or left as-is, with pre-boss shadow scales and tissue samples being removed in the latter case.
You have always been able to get nightmare/deathbringer pickaxes without killing any bosses due to the evil bosses dropping their materials before the fight is over (which gives access to molten), so reaver shark was actually always the harder and slower method of skipping to 100 pickaxe power early and should never have been the larger priority.
They have nerfed the amount of materials dropped by those bosses before the end of the fight by reducing the amount before, but you only need 6 scales/samples for the pickaxe so it wasn’t nearly enough. The pickaxes are too cheap for any kind of reduction to be effective short of just removing the materials from the earlier parts of the fight entirely.

Reaver Shark was also almost certainly not going to be a thing new players found and accidentally ruined their experience with anyway, and experienced players can just choose not to use it if they don't want to. We already have stuff like godmode available from the very start of the game in journey mode, so I don't quite understand why Reaver Shark was such a problem.

I still don't personally believe that skipping progression is that big of a deal. I find Terraria's progression fun, and I don't often feel like skipping directly to Molten at the start of the game. But if someone does want to do that, and they're willing to go to the trouble of getting a Reaver Shark or a Nightmare/Deathbringer Pickaxe without proper gear, then I say let 'em.

I also don't see what the problem with people skipping the progression is if they don't find it fun. Games are supposed to be fun, why do we want to force people to play the parts of the game they don't like?

I mean all arguments against progression skips tend to be moot anyways now that we have godmode available right from the start. If you choose to ignore godmode because it makes the game too easy (and I'd reckon just about everyone does), there's no reason you can't just ignore the progression skips as well.

The issue here is that Mining Hellstone is way too easy, so Reaver Shark becomes less of a progression skip, and more just getting Hellstone early and steamrolling all of Prehardmode because of it. I could just "not use it" but i could also "not use" old 1.3 Stormbow and Holy arrows, 1.3 Fetid, Vampire Knives and just about every item that has even been nerfed.

Is this an issue caused by the Underworld's difficulty and not Reaver Shark itself? Yes. Is it a lot less work to change the pickaxe power of one item instead of rebalancing a whole biome? Also yes.

To me, this just says that the change that requires more work is still worth doing.

Terraria (and by extension, the Terraria community) prefers when items and their crafting materials are not too rare. Any useful item should not take more than around 30-45 minutes to obtain under ideal conditions.
@trya This is actually from pinned thread on this forum. Making something ultra rare is not the right choice.

also I just think that it should be brought back to its former glory. (100% Pickax power)

Do you also agree that dying to evil bosses for early nightmare/deathbringer is a problem too, then?

Pre-nerf reaver didn't mine just up to hellstone, but up to cobalt/palladium too, which is too much imo. That's like getting a solar pick at the start of hardmode.

Maybe it could mine hellstone, though that's a pretty big skip too, still kinda comparable to that solar pick. Maybe up the required fishing power to fish it up, so you can fish it from progressing through fishing quests. Currently it's just too easy to get to warrant that skip, especially if you travel to the Dungeon side of the map.

achem:: (sound of me clearing my throat) the rod of discord, perhaps?
1 in 500 chance on normal seed, 1 in 100 in celebrationmk10.
Which is a lot less than 1 in 10,000.

Why do you want to skip all pre-HM pickaxe progression, though? Is it hard to mine Hellstone?
