Terrarian

Ever since Cenx released that these would be new starting clothes (clothes on character) I began thinking about whether you could chose a specific class at the start of each new character.

Warrior, Ranger, Sorceror, Summoner.

These classes would come with there own unique perks, weapons and starting clothes.

(Not adding weapons because there is already a thread based around this.)

Each class will start of with a perk. A type of potion that lasts for 6 minutes, but can be used infinite times. These can be reforged at the goblin tinkerevfor 10 silver to turn into a different type of perk. You can only have 1 perk active at a time. If you use a second perk it will just replace the original.

Ofcourse choosing a class is optional, so there will be a 'regular class.' You just start with a random choice of the 4 weapons and regular starting clothes.

Also, you will still be able to use weapons/ armours/ accessories from other classes. There won't be any restrictions.

Also, this could be an expert mode addition only. Just to add a tiny bit of buffing.

Clothing types can be changed at a dresser.

Non- copper shortsword weapons are suggestions from another thread by @Pigron Lord of the snow .
http://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/starter-class-items.8250/

So... The classes.
Regular -
perk: +4% crit strike chance. Random starting weapon choice
Regular (or random) starting clothes

Warrior -
perk: +3 defense
Copper short sword
Knight themed starting clothes

Ranger
Perk: +10% increased movement speed
Copper short boow
Hood and cloak

Sorceror
Perk: +20 mana (40 to start with)
Wooden staff Like amethyst staff w/ 5 base damage and short range.
Clothes shown in picture.

Summoner
Perk: + 1 minion (maybe to op - leave alternate suggestion as a comment)
Copper Golem ( works like a frost hydra . )
Dont know what clothes to wear.

I hope you like my suggestions! If you think it needs balancing, let me know how.
If you have clothing sprites they would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to hear your feedback.

Just gonna quote myself.

Terraria is not an RPG that forces you down an irrevocable path. This idea is merely adding in the illusion that there are classes in the game. When people start out, it is best when you give them everything, and nothing. They can choose for themselves what they would like to use as they progress. They can switch their preferences in mid-game, or in mid-battle if they like.

For first time players, being shown this option is probably more detrimental to their growth, because then they'd think that they should be restricted to one weapon/armor type where they shouldn't be.

For seasoned players, if they want to do a class playthrough, they can just as easily make a fresh character and world, bring some starter items and then go on.

All in all, no support from me.

I was considering making it an expert mode only thing. Would that help. Because expert mode will be difficult and giving small buffs i think would be a good idea. Also its not irreversable. You can choose to not go down a path and it doesn't restrict you in any way. Thats why i specifically put in the 'regular' option.

Considering that you get some bonus by not choosing regular, I don't see why anyone would pick regular in any case. You are forcing people to choose a path, especially by giving each different bonuses.

In this case, only people who thinks that hardcore is anything but a pain in the neck would choose regular over the bonuses.

I never understood the argument that you shouldn't put classes in terraria, you mean to tell me you re spec every time you feel like switching to a gun or a sword? Sure there buddy, most players already have characters for the different classes why not just officialise it?

Re read it. Regular gets +4% crit chance on all weapons! Thats a pretty good bonus!
That's a pretty sweet bonus.

Somebody gets it!

For myself, I've never understood why people want there to be class startups in a game where you aren't even close to being punished or restricted for sticking to one class or changing to another whenever you like.

I'll admit, I glanced that one over.

For myself, I wouldn't even bother taking warrior/mage/range bonus. Movement speed doesn't mean much, 3 defense means you've reduced 1.5 damage on average(moot by mid to end game) and 20 extra mana which I can just get from five stars.

I've said my piece, so I'll just move on.

wow you really just quoted yourself LOL
But actually classes in the long run don't matter in terraria which is kinda weird to me, when i'm blasting stuff with rockets it gets annoying that i'm only a "ranger" cuz i'm geared that way, and i didn't notice him say there were restrictions so you can still use w/e it'll just be a cool starting perk.

This is why i love dark souls, good amount of classes but really you can play w/e you want.

There isn't any punishment, its rewarding for players who want to start of differently than a copper shortsword and maybe want to use a bow or different type of weapon. In no way does it restrict you. It provides diversity

We don't need classes in Terraria because they are not meant to be there. The whole game would be senseless with such kind of feature.

This whole thing provides restriction to me, not diversity.

But hey, that's just me.
I don't really see your point. You can play the game exactly how you normally do. But its ok, thanks for the feedback.

There are classes, why do you think they have different armours/ accessories and weapons to match them. Also, if you read the post fully, you will find that you don't have to join a class! Thats what people don't seem to realise.

The way you described it is quite restrictive. If we are to assume that the perks can't be changed once a character is created, it discourages changing classes at some later point in the game. Discouraging changing classes is bad, because in terraria players should have the freedom to choose to not assign to a class or choose to have a class.

If these perks were given through starting accessories however, it would not be as restrictive, although slightly imbalanced.

No, there aren't any classes. The equipment has got some, but that's not important, you can play with the combination of items you want. The ability to choose a class at the beginning wouldn't change anything at the whole game, so that would be a big waste of resources.

And... the start has to be like it is. If you would start with non-regular gear the game would loose some challenge from the gameplay. If you want to play a mage, then you have to search for magic weapons. The start with one would be boring...

(Anyways, you could request a mod that adds this kind of feature)
[Sorry for my bad english, i'm still learning it. ^^]

We don't NEED large content updates either but it's cool to get them, this would be far from senseless as it's already in game they just don't have a start window for it. If anything it would add an extra something to the rpg element of terraria.

@Drdragonfly @SyZtemal @Freenight, ok ive changed it so that it works like a clairvoyance buff.

There are plugins and mods that already do 90% of this.

Quite frankly I like Terraria the way it is. I don't want it to turn into a leveling based RPG. I cannot support your idea for that reason.

Where do you see levels? And terraria is already rpg based, albeit a bit mary sue.
