Steam Terraria not launching - Ubuntu

RabidBirthday

Terrarian
I'm using Ubuntu 22.04, there's no error message, just closes instantly. I've tried Proton and Steam Linux Runtime, neither opened properly. I've seen other posts that didn't have a solution, thought I'd ask myself. My other Steam games work perfectly, I don't get why this is.
This is my first time playing on anything other than console or mobile so please don't be mean if there's something obvious I'm missing 😭😭😭😭

Hey @RabidBirthday,

Unfortunately, I know very little about Linux, but I'll do the best I can to assist you. :)

Could you try running Terraria in a terminal with the -logerrors argument, to see if it prints any errors?

i've found it works, just only if i start it within 5 or so minutes of turning on my laptop. anyway, this didn't return anything

It could be a ram issue, when you first start your laptop/pc you usually have no other programs already active

That is quite odd, that implies that some other program may be interfering with it.

Terraria works perfectly when you launch it this way, even for an extended amount of time? What if you close it and then immediately re-launch it?

Does the antivirus stop Terraria?

i don't actually *have* an antivirus, i've never found i needed one on linux systems. i used mint a lot before this and never caught anything.

i mean, i have 8gb, which should be sufficient? other than that i literally only have other steam games, vlc and firefox.

it says it's already running if i close and relaunch. if it crashes, which barely ever happens, it'll relaunch fine.

I see. Unfortunately, I don't really know what to suggest: it does seem Terraria can launch, just not under certain circumstances, which if I had to guess seems like an issue with your operating system rather than Terraria itself. I don't know Linux well enough to give you any further advice, I'm afraid. :(

considering i don't have issues with other steam games, and it seems to be an issue across all flavors of debian, i feel like this probably *is* either a terraria issue or a steam issue.
