The early game armor sets don't really have anything going except for extra defense, so I thought why not give these armor sets added in the earliest versions of the game some more love. Adding some sort of extra bonus to it (in exchange for the pretty dull armor bonus). I noticed that the different weapon classes we choose from at the start of the game (i.e Melee, Ranger, Mage, Summon) are not all balanced, like ranger, which only has one armor set (not to mention after you kill Skeletron) . Maybe they could add some better support for these classes, in the form of these early game armors... Here are my ideas. (Note, this is mainly based on the original armor's total defense, in comparison to the later weapon classes.)
Copper/Tin
Copper (or its 1.2 variant Tin) is the first set of armor made of ores you can make, but let's face it; we never really use it.
Being the weakest and lowest defense, I think this could work good with the summoner class, which is also usually the armor set with the least amount of defense. This could potentially be a decent early game summoner set.
Remove the set bonus, and replace it with a summoner's stats, like for example 1 extra minion, and about 5% increased summon damage, with the total defense of this armor being about 5 defense. It would probably have 1% more minion damage for tin since tin is somehow better but idk. (Set Bonus would likely be an extra minion slot.)
Another suggestion is to decrease the amount of bars from 60 to 45, because getting 180 ores for such a low defense armor is just ridiculous.
Iron/Lead
Iron/Lead armor is an armor set we usually come around to using, but it almost instantly gets replaced by the better Silver/Gold variants.
Here we can apply the magic bonus, since Magic users have the 3rd place in the amount of defense. The first armor set for magic users right now is either Meteor or Jungle, both have good stats, but an early game set could work as well.
Like Copper, remove the set bonus, and replace it with Magic stats. For example 7% increased magic damage and critical strike chance, and decrease mana usage by like 5% or something like that, with the total defense of this armor being about 8. Lead would probably have 1% better damage. (Not sure about Set Bonus.)
Right now we need 225 iron ores to craft this set for 11 defense. 225 ores. Which is 75 bars, so I say decrease the amount to about 55.
Silver/Tungsten
Silver/Lead armor is a good armor set early game, it's one I usually use to defeat Brain of Cthulhu/Eater of World. It also looks pretty nice too.
Applying range stats to this armor would make sense, considering we have Silver bullets already (although we have no tungsten variant for some reason.)
Remove the current set bonus, replace it with about 8% increased ranged damage and crit. (The set bonus would be 11% chance not to use ammo)
Tungsten would be a bit better. You'd get about 11 defense from this set.
We need 300 silver to craft this, or 75 bars. I say decrease that number to 60 bars instead.
Gold/Platinum
Gold/Platinum is the best tier of the four, but players don't usually use this because of the astounding 360 ores used to make it.
Due to this having the best defense, it would be great to add melee stats to this. Remove the set bonus and add about 9% increased melee damage and speed. (Set bonus would probably be giving the enemy gold potion effect or some crap like that.)
You'd get about 13 defense from this.
Decrease the amount of bars needed for this to an amount players would actually find reasonable, because 90 bars is just jaw dropping.
Anyways those were my ideas, and I hope you liked them.
