PC Terraria (1.4.4.9) does not open from Steam

Suigetsu52

Terrarian
I'll add details since I know stuff like this has been asked/reported before, but the previous solutions have not worked for me.

Device Specs just in case:
 • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
 • GPU: Integrated (AMD Ryzen 5 5600G) (4GB VRAM)
 • RAM: 2x16GB Timetec Pinnacle Konduit 3600Mhz RAM
 • MOBO: MSI A320M-A Pro MAX
 • PSU: EVGA 500BQ 80+ Bronze
 • Storage: 1x500GB Patriot M.2 NVME (C:\) & 1x1TB Timetec 2.5" SATA III SSD (D:\)
 • OS: Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build N° 26100.4202

I launched Terraria on Steam last time without issues past Saturday (March 15th), at that time everything worked fine, .NET Framework is updated (4.0; 6.0.36; 7.0.20; 8.0.14; 9.0.3 all of which have their x64 & x86 versions installed), XNA Framework is also updated (4.0), and when I tried to launch it using Steam Beta Client (Version 1742420835) two days ago (Thursday, March 20th) the green Play button turned into the usual blue Stop button, and then immediately closed and turned back into the green Play button.

Upon further investigation, I noticed the Task Manager showed a Terraria Process being opened, which closed every time after a second. I'll append a video showing both this and the aforementioned Steam Button issue:
None of the times I've run Terraria through Steam has an error been shown to me, nor has it generated any kind of log file. It simply closes without any notification nor warning.

To clarify, I already tried to:
 • Run both the game and Steam as administrator.
 • Uninstall and reinstall my graphics drivers.
 • Uninstall and reinstall all the .NET Framework versions.
 • Uninstall and reinstall XNA Framework.
 • Uninstall and Reinstall Terraria.
 • Uninstall and Reinstall Steam.
 • Uninstall and Reinstall Terraria & Steam.
 • Remove my config files from C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\MyGames\Terraria.
 • Remove my Worlds and Players from C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\MyGames\Terraria.
 • Run from Steam using the arguments "-logerrors -logfile" in launch options (which simply returned a log file filled only with the text Error Logging Enabled. every time I ran Terraria through Steam).
 • Change Terraria from Drive C:\ to Drive D:\
 • Change Terraria from Drive D:\ to Drive C:\
 • Verify Integrity of files (which returned a single file to be downloaded, it downloaded, same thing happened, running the verification always returns a single file missing, regardless if I run the game or not).
 • Uninstall tModLoader. (tModLoader runs from Steam without issues).
 • Talk to Steam Support (Only provided Terraria's specific contact information, nothing related to Steam contact information whatsoever).
 • Run Terraria with Steam in offline mode. (Nothing changed).
 • Add -nosteam to launch options under Terraria properties on Steam. (Results not favorable).

However, I found myself confused when I tried today (Saturday, March 22nd) in a last desperate attempt, to run the game from the binary itself, right from the game folder, and the game fired up without any issues.

When I run the game from its folder, it opens without any issue, my saves can be loaded and I can even play with friends, no crashes whatsoever, and Steam registers the game is running, showing my friends I opened the game and showing the blue Stop button. Yet I still cannot run Terraria through Steam.

If anyone knows something else I could do to fix this, please let me know.
If this is not a Terraria issue, but a Steam issue, or this is not the place for this, and somebody knows where the right place to report this is, I'd be happy to migrate this over there.

Thank you kindly!

Edit: Added Context about the absence of error pop-ups or warnings.
Edit 2: Added another possible solution I found before that I tested without favorable results, but forgot to add to the list.
Edit 3: Tested new possible solution, didn't work, added to the list of tests done.
Edit 4: Same as Edit 3.
Edit 5: I upgraded my RAM and updated my Windows, so I reflected those changes in my device Specs, sadly, I still encounter this same issue, and yes, the game binaries still work perfectly.

having the same exact problem im also lost and have not come across anyone talking about this issue

Hello @Suigetsu52, sorry to hear you're having problems.

If the binary itself runs without issue I believe this is most likely a Steam issue. Have you tried contacting Steam Support yet?

I did try to contact Steam Support, but when I do it, they only show me contact information for Terraria itself, nothing related to a Steam failure, nor a way to contact Steam directly, I will try again just in case, I'll update in about 15 minutes.

As stated above, Steam doesn't provide any way to contact them directly. A picture of the response has been attached here:

Edit: Updated as stated in the first paragraph.

What is the name of the file that's missing, if it told you..?

It never told me what the file was, and activating logging didn't help with that either.

The verification of files simply returned a "download completed" state for a couple hundred kb file with an unspecified name or path, then when I ran the game through steam once again, the issue in the first video happened again, regardless of the PC being restarted or not.

So I'm assuming tModLoader doesn't run either?

Funnily enough, tModLoader runs without a hitch. Although I uninstalled it recently, but I tested it when I found the issue the first time (forgot to add it into the list, I will add it now)

In any case, I'm currently installing it just to test it once more, just in case. I'll edit this comment once I do that.

As stated before, tModLoader has no issue launching from Steam, I'm currently running tModLoader v2025.1.3.1 with Terraria v1.4.4.9

Edit: Update mentioned before.

tModLoader has to run Terraria itself to launch, so that file that did not download is likely related to the bootup.
Does the game load in offline mode?

Checking that out rn, will update with an answer.

Terraria does NOT launch in offline mode either. Same issue as before. Will add to list in the main issue comment.

That's unfortunate. Let's take a look at what exactly Steam is trying to do.

Could you launch Terraria via Steam again, then go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs and upload console_log.txt to this thread?

I'm attaching a pastebin link containing the text in the file, the file will also be attached to this reply just in case.

Pastebin - console_log.txt

Okay, it seems like it's not starting the Steam Overlay, though I can't tell if that's because something's breaking there or because it exits before it can even get to that point.

Could you try adding -nosteam to your launch options and see if that makes a difference?

After doing this, the command did not change anything that could be noticed, the issue persisted, in any case, I will attach the new log file again as a pastebin link and as a file in case there were some changes.

Will also add this step in the tested possible solutions section above.

Pastebin - console_log.txt 2.0

Could you additionally upload your latest log in Documents/My Games/Terraria/Logs?

Of course, as done before, there will be a link to pastebin and the original file as well.
From now on I won't be specifying this again, it will be taken for granted.

Sadly, as stated before, enabling logging on Terraria's Launch Options on Steam was not useful in any way.

Thank you for the logs and your patience.

Unfortunately, I'm at a loss to why this would happen. My interpretation of both the logs and the circumstances (i.e. this only happens when launching via Steam) is that Terraria successfully launches but its process is killed almost immediately after. I believe this may be Steam's doing after all, but unfortunately I wouldn't know how to confirm or deny this. At any rate, there doesn't seem to be anything on the Terraria side for me to look into, so I'm afraid I've run into a dead end.

I'm sorry I don't have any better news for you. :(

If you are having the exact same issue I would advice you to contact Steam Support as well, as it looks like it's specifically Steam that is causing this.
