Happy launch day, Terrarians!
At long last, today is the day: Terraria 1.4.5 is here! What better way to kick off the year of Terraria's 15th Anniversary, right? We know the wait has been a long one, but we hope that everyone enjoys what this latest update has in store. As always, we will be posting any hotfixes or important information regarding Terraria 1.4.5 here in this launch post thread, so you will want to keep an eye on this one for sure.
Focusing on the goal of a global, synchronized launch across all platforms and regions, we will be rolling out today on PC, Console, and Mobile everywhere except for the bespoke China Mobile version. A combination of factors led to this. The Chinese mobile edition offers online features based on official servers, which will require additional server migration work upon receiving the complete 1.4.5 content code, followed by a formal review process for the new materials. The completion and release of version 1.4.5 is also very close to the Chinese New Year, and that after the work of porting and localization review, there remains an essential phase of internal testing, which we consider crucial to ensuring a polished gameplay experience. Re-Logic, 505 Games, and XD believe that taking the time to ensure quality is more meaningful than rushing the update before it is ready. Therefore, after discussions with our partner team, it has been jointly determined that the release timing for the Chinese region will differ from that of other versions.
These things can happen when you have so many moving parts. We are working with XD to try and improve the process in the future so that things are truly aligned from now on. That said, expect China Mobile to update to 1.4.5 just as soon as possible!
在涉及多方协作的复杂项目中,此类情况时有发生。我们正与XD团队共同优化后续流程,力争实现未来版本的真正同步。期待中国移动版能在准备工作完成后尽早更新至V1.4.5!
So, 'Bigger & Boulder!', why 'Bigger & Boulder' you ask? Beyond a good bit of additional content, a lot of effort with this update went into rounding out and expanding on existing experiences. Things like making inventory management and crafting easier than ever. We expanded upon secret world seeds - something that we feel greatly expands the replayability/freshness of the game - while also making them more accessible than ever before. We also had a focus on improving things like atmosphere on top of our continual polish/quality of life/balance efforts - which is getting harder and harder as Terraria gets bigger!
Oh, and you might encounter some new boulders... or existing boulders in new ways. Don't say we didn't warn you!
As always, we never share everything that is in each update - not even in the "full" changelog. Part of the fun is in the discovery! Good luck and happy adventuring, Terrarians!
Before you dive in to all of the details, check out the Terraria 1.4.5: Bigger & Boulder Trailer courtesy of Chippy!
Once we get through the 1.4.5 launch (and all of the fixes and whatnot), we will be checking back in with everyone to share some details on future plans - but we will leave that as a mystery for now!
The team will be out and about today, hanging out, collecting bugs and feedback, etc. Be sure to catch us at any of the locations below!

MAKING SENSE OF THE MADNESS - NEW CRAFTING INTERFACE
Uncovering new materials and using them to craft ever more powerful gear or just simply cool items has always been central to the Terraria experience. With what is now over 6000 items in the game, it goes without saying that taking a hard look at managing such an expansive crafting experience was needed. Something that makes the potentially-overwhelming feel managable, while also feeling consistent and keeping some familiar functionality. With that in mind, we have introduced a new crafting interface that should feel a lot like how "Research and Duplication" works in Journey Mode. Both the Guide crafting recipe interface as well as crafting station interfaces are now organized by tabular functions (e.g. Weapons, Furniture, etc.) as well as being fully searchable so that you can quickly find what you need to craft any particular item.
This new crafting interface replaces the old "grid" view - for those that prefer the old ways, the list view for crafting is still available by clicking the crafting icon again, as it has been in the past. We really think the new interface accomplishes our goals set out above, and we cannot wait to hear what you think!
Oh, and while we were at it, we made some improvements to the way that crafting from chests works - you can now automatically use materials from nearby chests to craft items. No need to put them in your inventory first - or even open any chests first! With some proper base building, this should put all of your materials at your fingertips automatically. If that gets overwhelming, just toggle it off in the crafting menu. Coupled with the powerful new crafting interface, crafting in Terraria has never been better!
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT IMPROVEMENTS
Much like sandworms, most people don't really care to spend tons of time fiddling with their inventory when they would rather be getting back to the Digging, Fighting, and Building. Streamlining Inventory Management is a constant focus area for our team with each Terraria update. With 1.4.5, you are getting a couple of tweaks to help keep the clutter down and allow you to spend more time on the good stuff...
The new Banner Menu allows players to claim and use their banners at their convenience. No more having to tote them around or stuff them in a chest somewhere. You will still need to earn them however...
All identical items are now fully stackable! Yes, that includes items with the same prefix/suffix combos!
I LIKE TO WATCH - NEW SPECTATOR FEATURE
In the past, when a player is slain while on a multiplayer server, they would have to sit there and watch the respawn countdown. While that is certainly riveting, we find the new Spectate feature to be vastly superior. This allows any players waiting on a respawn to toggle between the other players on the server - see what they see! How is that big boss fight going? Are they stealing your coins that you dropped when you died? Now you will know!
BE THE LANDLORD YOU DREAM OF - IMPROVEMENTS TO HOUSING MANAGEMENT
Villagers no longer require a valid room/home in order to spawn in your world. This should make them more accessible to players and take some of the pressure off of making "Terrarian's First Cubicle Tower" on each playthrough. Villagers without a home/room will retreat to safety, and thus will be unavailable to players during the nighttime hours.
The Housing Query feature has had a makeover as well, and now provides a visual indictation of what is being scanned as well as icons indicating where the necessary valid elements for Villager housing are located. Of course, you will also still get a text notification of what is missing.
This is just a sampling of the Quality of Life improvements we have made in Terraria 1.4.5! Be sure to dive into the full changelog for all of the juicy details!

WORLD SEEDS
We feel like World Seeds are such an untapped gameplay feature for so many players. The special world seeds put a whole new spin on Terraria - each unique in its own right - and substantially enhance the longevity and replayability of the game. However, the past implementation left a lot to be desired. Either people do not know that they exist (unless you follow our news releases carefully, find out via word of mouth or happen across them on the wiki, how would you know the fun world seeds are even there?), the entering of codes is a pain, or you are somewhat limited in what is possible. For Terraria 1.4.5, we wanted to address this in a substantial way...
NEW WORLD SEED MENU
Accessible by clicking the little seed icon next to World Seed during setup for generating a new world, the new World Seed Menu displays all of the main special seed world types that are available. Simply choose what you want, click apply, and off you go!
But wait, there's more! You can also create custom special seed combinations. Ever wondered what a Remix + Not the Bees! world would be like? Wonder no more!
SKYBLOCK WORLD SEED
A world without any ground, where you begin your adventure on a tiny island in the sky. How will you survive and thrive when building quite literally includes building the world itself? This unique world seed introduces entirely new gameplay dynamics and rules - when resources are scarce and you are one mis-step from a plummet to your doom, you will have to learn all new ways to work your way to the end.
What will your palace in the sky look like?
NEW SECRETS ABOUND FOR YOU TO UNCOVER
You know how we do - we always have to leave some secrets out there for players to find. All we will say is that some fun effects can be unlocked via specific combinations of special seeds from the World Seed Menu or - as before - secret code words. What sorts of effects or seeds might you unlock? How about becoming a vampire?
Vampires would be wise to avoid the sun at all costs!
Maybe you have wondered what Terraria would be like if you and your friends would start in different positions on the map? Well, wonder no more! The new "royale with cheese" seed will create a different spawn position for every team; simply join the world, choose your team and you will be teleported to your very own starting territory! When we playtested this seed internally, we discovered this creates all sort of interesting dynamics: where do the villagers end up living? Who gets which Pylons? Is it morally acceptable to sneak into another team's base and steal all their stuff? Whether you want to play cooperatively, capture-the-gem, or a good old Hardcore PvP team deathmatch, this seed is sure to shake up your experience!
Perhaps you've one day found yourself in a particularly festive and jingly mood, only to look at your calendar and discover it's the middle of summer? Well, the time of changing your system clock is over: the new "jingle all the way" seed will ensure Christmas season in your world all day, every day! Are you more of a Halloween person? No fear! Well, lots of fear, actually, because the "hocus pocus" seed will permanently spookify your world, no matter the time of year!
Another seed that is splashing down in this update might make you want to bring a towel or an umbrella, because the forecast is rain. Lots and lots of rain. Don't bother waiting until the rain lets up to go outside, because it's not going to. But hey, at least the fish seem to like it! Or have you ever looked at your world and thought to yourself "Hm, what this needs is more holes!"? Well, for those of you wishing to explore a world of jagged peaks and craggy rocks, we added another seed to do just that!
If all this sounds rather tame to you, not to worry! We have a couple that are quite a bit more impactful. For example, if you ever thought that the Dungeon is too small, there are too few of them, and you don't spend a lot of time there, then good news! We have a seed that solves all three of those problems! Can you find the secret phrase that unlocks it?
Like the special seeds, these secret seeds can be combined, and specific combinations have special interactions! Let us know what you discover!
Of course, World Seeds are just one aspect of Terraria 1.4.5 - be sure to check out the full changelog linked below for all of the details!

NEW ADDITIONS
Terraria 1.4.5 brings over 650 new items into the world of Terraria, bringing the total item count to over 6,000! Of course, there is more to content than just items, but we find it is always a good number to give a sense of scope...
TERRARIA x DEAD CELLS CONTENT IS HERE AT LAST!
Let's go back to where Terraria 1.4.5 began: Terraria x Dead Cells. Our friends at Motion Twin released their side of the crossover some time ago as a part of their Everyone is Here, Vol II Update. If you haven't checked out Dead Cells at this point, we would greatly encourage you to do so - it is truly a fantastic game.
At long last, the Terraria side of the Dead Cells crossover is available for Terrarians to enjoy. From vanity to furniture to weaponry taken from Dead Cells and re-imagined Terraria-style, we hope that fans of both games will find this new content to be authentic and fun to play with. What sorts of Dead Cells content might you find?
Display your treasures in all new ways! (Beheaded Vanity optional)
Deploy Dead Cells weapons to vanquish your foes!
Of course, this is just a teaser. We will leave it to you to dive into all of the Dead Cells content!
TERRARIA x PALWORLD
Our good friends at Pocketpair did a masterful job of bringing Terraria into Palworld just a few months ago during the Tides of Terraria Update. If you have not witnessed the glory of Meowmere or the epic Moon Lord boss fight in Palworld yet, what are you waiting for? Check out the update - as well as Palworld itself - over on the Palworld Steam Page!
For the Terraria side of the Palworld crossover, we focused in on some of the most popular Pals and tried to imagine what they might be like in the world of Terraria. Not only in regards to appearance, but we also tried to give each of them some fun - and in many cases, unique - functionality in game. These Pals are no mere pets, they are here to share your adventure alongside you!
Digtoise is here to help you delve ever deeper into the world of Terraria!
Cattiva can help make short work of your daily chores - like gathering wood
These are just two of the Pals that you will be able locate in Terraria 1.4.5 - keep your eyes out for more!
OTHER NEW ADDITIONS

What could this set possibly be?
SETTING THE MOOD - ENHANCING TERRARIA'S ATMOSPHERE
The team wanted to really up the ante in regards to enhancing the atmosphere of Terraria. New backgrounds, new environmental effects (both visual and beyond) and more... all a part of trying to bring the world of Terraria to life in new and exciting ways. Oh, and we went ahead and updated a bunch of sprites as well...
Gorgeous new Biome Backgrounds
Aurora Borealis
Sun Phase Effects
Visible Fish when Fishing
Updated Banner and Trophy Sprites
MAKING A WISH COME TRUE
In June 2024, we revealed that Terraria 1.4.5 would proudly include a vanity set in honor of Frank - a huge Terraria fan that was going through a critical illness and whose one wish was to have his very own vanity set in Terraria. The good folks at Make-A-Wish® New Jersey reached out to our team and the rest is history. Named after his player character, Heroicis, we are beyond excited to finally be able to bring this vanity set to everyone!
To help set the mood, we also put together a film noir shader that fits the style of the Heroicis set!
As a part of the launch day festivities, Frank asked if he could say a few words in the launch post... and so without further ado, we turn the floor over to Frank!
"Hey everyone, I just wanted to add my own input to this post because of the emotional weight it carries for me. Yes I had leukemia, that doesn't define me. Yes I have permanent neurological issues, that doesn't define me. I'm looking forward instead of living in the past. I say this not to draw attention to my struggles, but to demonstrate that whatever you're going through doesn't have to define you. You're stronger than you'll ever know. It took having cancer for me to realize that, but it doesn't have to be that dramatic. Enough yapping though, it's time for thank you's. Thank you to my parents who shepherded me through this. Thank you to the Make A Wish staff who made this all possible. Thank you all Terrarians who showed my vanity set so much love. Thank you to my friends who were always there to play video games with me when I needed a distraction. Last, but not least, thank you to the dev team who worked so close with me to bring my creative vision to life (shout out to Loki and Jaxrud). That just about does it for me. My set has a special obtainment method so happy hunting and I truly hope you enjoy the update!"

OTHER CHANGES & ADDITIONS
NEW - AND IMPROVED - LANGUAGE SUPPORT
With the launch of Terraria 1.4.5, we have added support for the following languages:
Japanese
Korean
Traditional Chinese
In addition, after a thorough review of the existing localizations by dedicated members of the Terraria community - and then a further professional review of those suggested edits by our professional localization company - we are rolling out what we hope will be improved translations across a number of the languages that we supported prior to Terraria 1.4.5. We doubt it will be perfect, but we do hope it yields a better experience for everyone.
NOTE: Some of the Community Review changes will be coming in 1.4.5.1, as we had a few items that we realized needed a second pass after we had already locked the build for First Party submissions.
EPIC NEW MUSIC
Do you hear boss music? Why yes indeed you do! Terraria 1.4.5 brings 8 new boss tracks to the game, meaning that each Terraria boss now has their own tunes! We also had a couple of tunes that didn't make the boss-tier cut, but we loved so much that we could not just let them go. You can find these via music boxes.
We will be adding these to the Official Soundtrack on Steam and elsewhere as quickly as each system allows. The Soundtrack update will include every track introduced since Journey's End - a total of 14 new Terraria tunes for your listening pleasure!
Terraria 1.4.5 has way too many balance/tweaks to be able to cover them off here - be sure to check out the full changelog linked below for all of the details!

CONSOLE & MOBILE SPECIFIC CHANGES
NEW RADIAL BUTTON
Multiple actions, same button - Radials
Anyone who's played Terraria before knows how many different actions there are to perform - grappling, quick healing and such. Because mobile needs to show each of these actions onscreen, we have had to contend with a lot of clutter issues over the years. To help rectify this, coming in 1.4.5 is a brand new radial button option! It combines up to 4 different actions into a single button, which are then accessed by pressing + swiping in a direction. They are customizable by the player, and are fully optional. Players preferring the old schemes need not change anything!
IMPROVED MOBILE CONTROL EDITOR
Our mission has long been to make our versions as customizable as possible. This extends in equal part to our mobile controls, which - with the addition of several other features - have needed a little love. To that end, we have rebuilt our mobile controls editor from the ground up! You now choose your control type (stick, button, radial), and select for that control what action it performs. We have also added a brand new testing environment from within the editor, as well as a few additional features that we invite you to spot in the video above! It's our hope that this will make control customization much more capable & intuitive for players.
DYNAMIC CONTROLLER HINTS/BUTTON MAPS
Seeing the unseen - new positions for controller hints
Up until now, control banner hints have been housed in the bottom middle portion of the screen. Because of how many there are, it can often be difficult to parse out specific actions from the list. To improve upon this, we have now rehoused several of these hints in more context-appropriate places! This includes within inventory pages, within icons, and within the HUD. This should make specific bindings much easier to find during gameplay.
MULTI-TOUCH FUNCTIONALITY
On mobile, the standard way to play is often with two thumbs. One issue this can present is not being able to perform two important actions at the same time - what if you want to press both the jump button and fire button, for example? To correct this, we have added a new feature to each individual button called multi-touch. When it is enabled, you can drag your finger off a button and it will stay pressed. Moving it over another multi-touch button will then press that button for as long as your finger is over it. Taking your finger off the screen will stop pressing both buttons. This should hopefully make several advanced control options more accessible to two thumb players. The footage above is from a session of us putting it through its paces!
ACTIONS MADE ACCESSIBLE - PRIMARY/SECONDARY ACTION TOGGLE
When the Portal Gun was first added in 1.3, we made the choice to relegate each of its actions to one button. While this made sense at the time, multiple items have since been added with their own set of primary / secondary actions, requiring more flexible controls by comparison. To that end, we have overhauled the way these actions are used:
- The interact button has now turned into an action toggle
- Pressing it will change which action (primary vs secondary) that action fires
- This affects all buttons + sticks, as well as screen taps
We have made a few additional visual overhauls as well to make these toggles clearer. This should make certain items like the Sky Dragon's Fury much easier to use overall on touch!
GO WITH YOUR GUT - PROXIMITY INTERACT
One thing the team has noticed throughout our testing of controller is that, at times, your cursor won't be in the right place when you want to interact with something. This requires you to shift it accordingly, which can slow things down. To that end, we have added a new feature we're calling Proximity Interact. In essence, if you happen to be standing over an interactable and:
GO WITH YOUR GUT - PROXIMITY INTERACT
One thing the team has noticed throughout our testing of controller is that, at times, your cursor won't be in the right place when you want to interact with something. This requires you to shift it accordingly, which can slow things down. To that end, we have added a new feature we're calling Proximity Interact. In essence, if you happen to be standing over an interactable and:
- Aren't actively moving / aiming
- Don't have your cursor over another interactable,
...then pressing Interact will target whatever is at the player's feet instead. This eliminates the additional time it takes for the cursor to reach the right position, and should hopefully make general play a lot smoother!
