Pixel Art Terraria Spriting Carnival 2

Ayyyyy finally sprited something with shading right upload_2018-7-25_21-58-31.png

@Gigavoir Do you have any tips for spriting?
I'm far from an expert and other people here could tell you better, but here's some big tips for anyone who wants some.

For palettes and colors:
1. NEVER EVER use pure black outlines for Terraria. Instead use a very dark color that isn't black.
2. Avoid grayscale at all costs, use desaturated blues.
3. Learn to hueshift. This video is good
4. Keep palettes small and contrast high, no point in having two near identical colors.

For shading:
5. Avoid banding and pillow shading. Banding is stacking lines of pixels like bricks, and pillow shading is shading without a clear lightsource.

6. Avoid mixels, or 1x1 pixels. This can easily be avoided by spriting in 1x1 and just exporting it in double size.
Mixels example:

(Right is mixels, left is no mixels)
7. Learn how to convey texture without noise, or randomly placed pixels. Use clusters instead.

Other misc tips:
8. DON'T EVER RECOLOR. Vanilla sprites are, for the most part, bad. Changing the palette not only makes it look worse, but shows you lack originality.
9. Learn from others. Never steal another person's work, but instead study what they do and use it as an example.

Helpful tutorials:

http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299 - More for general pixel art but can still be applied to Terraria. Incredibly detailed and covers a lot!
http://blog.studiominiboss.com/pixelart - Saint11's tutorials. Not made for Terraria at all but nonetheless very helpful.

Honorable mention: Sal's Sword Examples

Hope this helps at least a little bit!
