Terraria State of the Game - September 2025

At this point just be honest and do the thing we all know you're going to do: announce that 1.4.5 will drop sometime in 2026 with an asterisk. It's only been exactly three years between updates, what's another year on top of that?
I agree. I'd rather they just say when the update will release rather than a few vague comments.
I wrote a long message… published it… and then realized I wasn’t interested in a flame war. Then I deleted the message. Those who understood my thought have already understood it, and those who didn’t just lost 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the all human knowledge.
I would want to read that

Silksong was 7 years with no updates, would you rather Relogic went radio silent u til release?
Silksong is a new game. You're thinking of Hollow Knight, and Hollow Knight did not wait Seven Years for an update, people waited for Seven Years for a new game altogether. Re-logic probably holds some sort of record for being the most active game dev company to not update their game for the longest.

Also, we've already gotten the Silent Treatment. They gave us that when they slowly let Otherworld collapse into the abyss.

When I remember that "X would like to settle down" message from the old versions, it makes me feel so old, and I was glad it was coming back.

Yeah, just one more month of development, but that's okay, take your time. I just think it's best to admit right away that you won't be releasing this year, but in 2026.:guidesigh::guidesigh::guidesigh:

I just wish I had the great virtuous patience of my friend Zallaraxium

Oh, im flattered you mentioned me, Plague, and Aetelas I know the feeling, you remind me of another person I know here whose anxious and restless for the next update, but honesly speaking its best not to rush them, these things take time, though I have NO idea how the hell theyre gonna make crossplay work, I mean what would on have to implement to get different consoles to communicate an play together?

Villagers no longer require a House in order to appear!
Interesting, but feels like 100% unnecessary change.
With all the discounts and pylons people will build houses fo NPC eitherway.

I personally would rather like mechanics where NPC won't appear till I approve it manually. 😁
Something like, having fulfilled the conditions for NPC appearance, I'd get a note that "NPC X can appear". And after I get notes for several NPCs that interest me, decide how to settle them and build houses, I open these very notes, click the "OK" button in them and only then will the NPCs appear.

Besides, another question: where will these NPCs appear ?
I can already imagine NPCs running around the base, getting underfoot and preventing you from opening chests. Which means you'll have to abandon everything you've planned and start building houses for them so that NPCs don't interfere with your play.
The old system, where NPCs wouldn't spawn until a house was built, was definitely better.

But that's what I said, let them take their time. I'm just afraid I'll die before I see this update arrive.

Solid, Zallaraxium, and I quite agree: rushing people doesn't ever net you good outcomes.

... Which is why I'm so heckin' salty at this point. I've never rushed them, in fact my whole gripe was that they needed to actually stop and just release what they had. Keep in mind that this is an update; let me say it again, an U.P.D.A.T.E.'tuh. This isn't a sequel, an expansion, a whole new modular addition- none of that. It's an update, one that has taken so long- okay, lemme just say this: there are modders out there who have doubled content of games just by themselves, using unique and creative ideas, and did it in a third of the time, by themselves, and for no payment whatsoever. These folks come in to work, take three times longer to put in half the content of a modder, working as part of a larger team, and they actually get paid for it.

Unless this update doubles the sheer amount of content in the game, there is nothing they will add that will make me look back on all their broken promises and say "Heckin' wow! This was worth it." Because three years waiting for less than a mod's worth, is really just beleaguering.

P.S.: Good golly, Ms. Molly. They better not have been delaying this update for the sake of Crossplay. Most people I know couldn't give two s#!√s about Crossplay, and it isn't something you should tie into a content update. Ever.

Understandable, and i get you want them to update but they nee to finish up adding the new content making ssure it works, and then fixing any gliches an bugs that ruin the xperience, and i wsnt trying to sound demeaning btw, but i kinda hope its out soon, but you make some fair point.

I really don't like the changes to NPCs moving in, if I'm getting this right, there will be no way to get rid of them now? Most NPCs are kind of useless and just end up taking space, I don't want to be forced to build a house for the painter on every playtrough now 😐

This is actually a valid complaint! I have no idea how you would get rid of NPCs without some sort of overly gimmicky solution.

Without any further details from them, my speculation is that the NPCs could travel in randomly like the Travelling Merchant, and then bugger off for the night if no house is available. It would certainly go a long way to making the world feel more alive! At that point they'd be tourists, rather than settlers.

This would probably be annoying and confusing, but it is kind of a solution. I'm 50/50 on this.

Personally, I'm the Big Sad over this. The fact that presence is no longer tied to Housing is.. weird. I agree with a few others here that not being tied so directly is awkward and makes the NPCs feel a little less.. purposeful; to say nothing of the Stinkbugs. I'm closer to 30/70 on it, but that might just be my 'initial impression' bias talking.

Any Villagers that do not have a house assigned to them will leave for safety when night comes!

Greetings Terrarians!

We have one foot already into the Fall season - our favorite season of the year! - and we are drawing ever closer to the release of Terraria 1.4.5. More on that below. We are also getting really close to the release of the Terraria Board Game in November. The end of the year is setting up to be quite eventful indeed! We are also already setting the stage for what lies ahead in 2026 - Terraria's 15th Anniversary year. We hope we can bring some more cool stuff your way as a result of those plans, but that will have to wait for another day. For now, let's dive in to the latest and greatest news in the world of Terraria!

TERRARIA 1.4.5 - THE FIX IS IN (PROGRESS)

The team has been hard at work this month, aiming to reach the "content complete" (also known as the Release Candidate) stage within the next couple of weeks. What does that mean, exactly? Well, that means that - at that point - we will have officially added all of the new content/features/etc. that will make it into Terraria 1.4.5. After that, all that is left to do is testing, tweaking, and bug fixing. Of course, that testing/fixing process takes a good amount of time and is somewhat unpredictable (we had some pretty nasty tickets emerge just this past week, for example). Once we reach "content complete" and we have a bit of time to focus on fixing, we should have a much better sense of precisely when Terraria 1.4.5 will reach completion. We are working as closely as possible with our partners in parallel to try and shorten the time needed on the backend for first party submissions, localization, etc. - as, again, our goal for 1.4.5 is a global synchronized launch.

All that said, reaching content complete is a major milestone and we are truly at the final stages now. We know this update has taken far too long to get out to you all, and we are sorry for that. We do hope that you enjoy it once it is out - and that you are excited for what else is in store for the future of Terraria. More on that in the months ahead. For now, we are all in on the push to get this update out to you as quickly as possible!

This month's spoiler looks at some improvements to the way NPC Housing operates and is communicated to the player...

Villagers no longer require a House in order to appear!
(That said, if you haven't built them a House, they'll ask for one!)

We've also added additional hints on how a house can be built, and, added visualization for how housing is scanned!
Any Villagers that do not have a house assigned to them will leave for safety when night comes!

Hello everyone!

On October 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. As always we are grateful for the massive amount of community participation in developing and testing new features each month.

This month's release contains the new ModAchievement feature. We are excited to see how mods use ModAchievement and how they'll give players long-term goals to work towards. We've seen many mod makers showcasing their new achievement art this last month and look forward to seeing them in-game. As usual, we'd like to encourage modders to test out new tModLoader features on the preview branch if they are relevant to your mod. Major features in preview are listed on our Discord.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

We look forward to seeing how mods make use of these new features. As always, if you are having issues of any sort, definitely don't hesitate to check out our FAQ on github or reach out to us at our Discord.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR TML?

More features, continuing to evolve and grow what TML can do... and getting ready for 1.4.5.

As always, you can keep track of the current progress and much more in real time at tModLoader/tModLoader (But note that the completion percentage doesn't mean anything, because issues and PRs don't have weights.)

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

CONSOLE & MOBILE - DR STUDIOS
Hey there, Terrarians!

Once again, another month has flown by as we work hand-in-hand with Re-Logic to get 1.4.5 over the line. Work across multiple platforms is heating up as we near the Release Candidate stage and we really have to start planning for submissions and such in earnest. Hopefully, we will make it through that process cleanly and quickly - but it is always a bit unpredictable! We have some other things planned to share with you in the coming months, but that is a topic for another day. For now, we hope you are ready for a day sailing the open... skies?

MANUFACTURING PROGRESS
The Gameland team are hard at work manufacturing the games and have sent over some pictures, with more to follow soon. Plastics and neoprene generally come first as they take longer to make, followed by paper and cardboard components which are quicker to produce.

Big buckets o’ bosses, tonnes of trays and doodads full of dice!

We’re so excited to show you the other components as they are made!

---

RULEBOOK
After a final round of proofreading by over 1500 backers, we’ve finalised the rulebook and submitted the final paper print files for the game!

PACKING GUIDE
This is a game with lots of components, so we’ll be adding a packing guide to every copy of the game. This will show how trays are organised, how everything fits in the box, and will also contain a QR code to a video demonstration. We hope this will make unboxing and sorting your game a smooth and enjoyable experience!

BACKER REQUESTS
We’ve gathered a couple of backer requests below, and some miscellaneous bits and pieces that you might find interesting!

Okay the new housing feature is gonna be SO GOOD

Throarbin's videos like this one probably inspired the NPC housing and guiding change.
Terraria is notorious for being hard to get into in general and people have been talking about that aspect of the game for at least a decade or more

those changes sound really cool, i love that NPCs will show up even without homes waiting for them, now.

i assume by "leaving for safety", you mean they'll disappear at night if they don't have a home?

also, PoundToundHound, that is a great animation! :dryadhappy:

Ooh gerp! Yup, totally missed that, somehow.

Why? This just makes it easier for new players to find out the existence of other NPC's.
tbh I know the discounts and pylons exist, but it feels like housing not being required nullifies a lot of the reason to build housing in the first place. Of course the main issue is that for newbies, they don't understand when and why they need to build houses and what the rules are (and for certain kinds of players, the entire game is getting to the boss rush as fast as possible and ignoring everything else) so it's a minor quibble I'm willing to swallow. I like building nice builds, but I have to admit I often found myself throwing temporary-permanent floating wood boxes just to accommodate the mass of NPCs when the number of them outpaced my desire to build at the moment. Maybe I am just wary of change.

btw I really hope the new housing guidance gives some more helpful advice on "This housing isn't suitable" with 0 explanation and it's because of some obscure rule about floor space and platforms.
