There’s a good change that this is common knowledge, but I can’t find anything on this website that shows it, so here we go!

Summoners have an interesting running motif: death. The class that calls upon allies from seemingly nowhere has a death motif. Think about it; where do these minions come from? As proof of this motif being real and not a figment of my imagination, here’s all the sightings I know of…

• Pygmy Necklace: It has a skull on it.
• Necromantic Scroll: “Necromancy” is the art of bringing things back from the dead.
• Bewitching Table: It has several ghostly faces strewn about.
• Spooky Armor: Halloween is tied to several horror aspects; one of these is death
• Raven Staff: Ravens are a sign of death; they are even called a murder of crows.
• Stardust: It is created from a supernova, aka a giant explosion a star makes when it dies.

So, what does this mean? I see it as one of two things: a) you are reviving dead creatures to assimilate into your army, or b) you are shoving dead souls into your minions bodies’ so they have sentience.

This is likely not true for all of the summons; for instance, the UFO staff is likely mechanical. Here’s a question: does this apply to sentries, too? There are some sentient sentries, but there aren’t any necromantic themes in the sentry kit. However, it is mostly OOA content that would be hard to add lore to.

That is all very interesting, but I don’t exactly know the ramifications. All in all, this class definitely has a bit more going on with it under the surface.
