Terrarian Community Rules & Culture

Below, you will find the Culture, Rules, and Implications that govern Terraria Community Forum. Please note that further details can be accessed within the TCF User Guide. It is very important that you read and understand the "rules of the road".

Culture of Re-Logic Communities

Below we have laid out some cultural guidelines, and later some specifics for what might be the most typical situations. These are not meant to be all-encompassing, and it is important to note that if you keep to the following key themes in your discussions you are likely to be on the right track. We’ve highlighted a few parts that are of particular importance. The first two theme areas bear particular importance moving forward.
  • Mutual Respect: Our Communities approach each interaction and contribution in a manner that appreciates the fact that each of us has our own valid thoughts, feelings, and ideas. There is a difference between disagreement and disrespect. Debate the position, not the person.
  • Maturity: Regardless of age, our Communities strive to treat each other as we would like to be treated ourselves - as adults and as equals.
  • Transparency: Members of our Communities are free to express themselves openly and without fear of punishment – especially in regards to constructive criticism of how Re-Logic games and Communities can be improved. As long as this feedback is delivered in a manner consistent with the themes of Maturity and Mutual Respect outlined above, your voice will be heard.
  • Fun: Our Communities must never take themselves too seriously. There must always be room for humor, sarcasm, wit and general silliness: this keeps us from getting overly dramatic and reminds us of why we are here. However, when expressing humor, do not forget the themes of Maturity and Mutual Respect above – and remember that fun at another person’s expense is rarely funny.

In short, there is no rule set that can be written that will cover all instances. If you are conducting yourself with the above outlines of Community Culture in mind, you will likely never have any issues with the Rules. If you are only focusing on the literal rules themselves and taking an “it's against the culture, I know I’m being extremely rude, but there is no specific rule written for what I’m doing, so I’m ok” stance, you run the risk of having problems. The four outlines of Community Culture (Mutual Respect, Maturity, Transparency & Fun) carry a heavier weight than specific rules around the Community Forums. It is expected that all members will read, understand, and adhere to the guidance given by the Culture and Rules – ignorance of these guidelines will not be an excuse.

Specific Rules

The rules below are intended to address common areas of clarification that arise in communities. They are not intended to be all-encompassing, nor should they be taken as such. The Community Culture is the primary guidance for posting on our communities – and for staff actions. As gray areas arise and are resolved, additional rules may be added.

Post Respectfully & Intelligently

It should go without saying that the culture prohibits the following:
  • Trolling/Baiting/Flaming/Mocking/Harrassing others.
  • Personally Attacking other members.
  • Impersonation of other members/staff/developers.
  • Posting fake spoilers or update info about upcoming versions of Terraria, whether for joke purposes or otherwise.
  • Plagiarism of others' art/literature/music/etc.
  • Advertisements unrelated to the game in question.
  • The use of racial, homophobic, or otherwise bigoted speech.
  • The posting of images or GIFs containing uncensored profanity.
  • Posting of explicit material in any form: images, video, text, or otherwise – ReLogic Communities are PG-13. Explicit includes, but is not limited to:
    • Material that contains nudity, exposes/brings focus to traditionally private areas, or displays/implies sexual activity.
    • Material that includes graphic descriptions of sexual activity.
    • Staff will have the final call on any questionable content.

    Expectations When Posting

We ask that Community members strive for a certain level of quality content in their posts. As such, please avoid:
    • Single image/meme/word responses.
    • Posting +/-1 (use the like button instead).
    • Thread bumps without substantial additional content.
    • Multi/Double posting and duplicate threads.
    • Begging for anything, likes/games/follows/subscriptions/etc.

    Piracy & Modding

Each game may have different standards in regards to what is allowable in this area. However, in general, do not post:
    • Discussions or sharing of methods to pirate or hack Re-Logic software.
    • The specific limits on piracy/hacking discussions for Terraria are listed below:
      • For all platforms: Certain items in Terraria are unreleased/unavailable for general use, please read and abide by the following policies regarding them:
For a variety of reasons, the released versions of Terraria may contain various assets (items/weapons/armors/accessories) buried in the game code that are not intended for general use, and that are not obtainable through normal, legitimate gameplay.

Rules for Discussion of Unreleased & Unavailable Items
NOTE: The general rules and culture of Re-Logic Forums in regards to member conduct are, of course, always applicable.

These rules apply to ALL versions of Terraria, regardless of platform/operating system/device. They are not negotiable.

ALLOWED: General discussion of unavailable items - CE Bunny, Dev Armors, etc. - IS acceptable and allowed. This includes civil, respectful disagreement with the policies outlined here, but the policies themselves may not be deliberately violated to express that disagreement. Note that polls/petitions to overturn the policies will be ignored and possibly removed or locked.

NOT ALLOWED: Posting screenshots or videos that show unavailable/unreleased items is not allowed, as they increase the general desire to obtain them, thus causing disruption on the forum. This content will be removed and warnings issued.

NOT ALLOWED: Excessive boasting about having or using unavailable/unreleased items is not permitted on the forum. As with screenshots and videos, this increases the general desire to obtain them. If you have acquired any of these items, through whatever means, please keep it to yourself.

NOT ALLOWED: Engaging in trading for unavailable/unreleased items is not permitted on the forum, regardless of how or when the items were obtained. Requests and offers for such items may be modified or locked by the staff without notice, and repeat offenders may receive warnings.

NOT ALLOWED: Posting links to or the discussion of specific methods (guides, code, etc) to obtain these items is not allowed. This content will be removed and warnings issued. For specific guidelines on creating modded versions of Terraria for PC that make these items available, see the Client/Server Mods & Tools Rules.

Discussion of Unreleased (future) items that are in the code (e.g., S.D.M.G.) needs to be handled with the same care as other spoilers of future content. Such posts should be isolated to the [Future Updates & Spoilers thread]. Doing so respects the wishes and rights if other users that may want to avoid spoilers on future content.

As with Unavailable content, the discussion of methods of obtaining, screenshots/videos, boasting, and trading for these unreleased items is not allowed.

Unavailable items - all platforms: Red potion.

Unavailable items - console platforms: ALL developer armors, vanity items, and wings. Developer items are those identified as Red's, Cenx's, Loki's, Yoraiz0r's, Lazure's, Aaron's, Crowno's, D-Town's, Jim's, and Will's. Coin gun (not fully implemented due to differences in coin handling features.), S.D.M.G, Steampunk Wings, Gravity Globe, White Tuxedo

Available only in PC Collector's Edition: summoner item for Pet Bunny

Unreleased (future) items - all platforms: Coal

      • For Console Platforms: Distributing any Console game files on Re-Logic forums is prohibited; please read and abide by the following policies:
505Games has issued the following statement for all Console platforms:

"We would like to remind Terraria console users that editing the core files of their game is strictly forbidden, as is modifying core game content and distributing saved games.

Altering game files and distributing game saves not only voids your right to technical support from us but is moreover prohibited by both Sony and Microsoft and could result in direct punishment. Anyone altering their game does it at their own risk and risks having their game not be compatible with future updates and/or content.

The distribution of save/hacked console files is strictly prohibited on the [Re-Logic] forums. These files are from unknown origins, are untested, and not only risk your ability to play and enjoy the game, but could potentially create a security risk to your personal data stored on your device. Anyone distributing these types of files will be warned and the files will be removed. Repeat offenders are subject to disciplinary action at the discretion of the community moderators.

We hope you continue to enjoy playing the console versions of Terraria as originally envisaged by Re-Logic and re engineered for the console platforms by 505, and we look forward to bringing you more great content as soon as we’re able."

      • For Mobile platforms: Distributing any Mobile game files on Re-Logic forums is prohibited; please read and abide by the following policies:
505Games has issued the following statement for all Mobile platforms:

"It has come to our attention that some mobile Terraria users have been actively editing the core files of their game to access unreleased and unfinished content, modify core game content, and distribute saved games that contain such altered files.

Accessing and altering mobile game files voids your right to technical support from us. Anyone altering their game does it at their own risk and risks having their game not be compatible with future updates and/or content.

    Account Specifics & Profile Pages
    • Avatars and Signatures are held to the same standards as posts.
    • Signatures must be no taller than 150px in height.
    • Profile pages are subject to the same rules as public threads.
    • Multiple Accounts are not allowed.
    • Users may no longer request name changes that include unusual characters or icons. Pre-existing names will not be forced to change.
    In-Game Issues
    • Issues arising on in-game servers and the like are outside of the purview of Community Staff.
    • We would ask that such issues be resolved within the members and staff of the server in question.

    Reporting, Peer Review, & Appeals

When issues arise that need staff attention, we ask that members utilize the Report function.
    • Click the “Report” button at the bottom of every post.
    • Provide a reason for your report.
    • Report & Carry On: Do not tell the other party you have reported them, do not use reporting as a threat, and do not continue to engage the troll/insulting party in dialogue. Let the Staff take care of the issue – it’s their job, not yours.
    • If issues persist, members may utilize the “Ignore” feature to block communications from any other non-staff member.
      • Go to the member’s profile that you wish to ignore.
      • Click “Ignore”.
All staff actions are subject to peer review, appeals, and possible escalation. If you feel a staff member has acted in error and/or in violation of the Staff Creed, the following process should be utilized:
    • Contact the staff member for a mature, rational discussion of the situation.
    • Contact other staff members for a peer review of the situation.
    • Contact Administrator-Level staff if the prior two steps have not resolved the situation satisfactorily.
    • No one is perfect and mistakes happen. However, if a staff member is found to be acting in direct violation of the rules and creed, they are subject to disciplinary action – up to and including termination of their staff role.

    Warnings, Warning Points, & Implications

Accounts found to be breaking the rules can receive a warning for those violations. The warning will be visible on both the post in question and on the account page of the member receiving the warning. The warned member will also receive an Alert in their “Alerts” tab.

Warnings may or may not be accompanied by Warning Points, which will ultimately result in consequences (temporary bans, termination) against that account. A list of those possible consequences is displayed below.
    • Warnings can be given any point value, based on the severity and frequency of the violation. There are standard levels set for the most common offenses in order to promote consistency.
    • Warning Point Thresholds & Associated Account Actions
      • 5 Points – One Week Account Ban
      • 10 Points – Two Week Account Ban
      • 15 Points – One Month Account Ban
      • 20 Points – Account Termination/Permanent Ban
    • Note that these levels are not necessarily sequential. Violations may be severe enough that Staff can move directly to temporary account bans and/or termination.
    • Warning Points have expiry dates that correspond to the severity of the offense. More severe violations will stay on a member’s record longer than minor ones.
    • In addition to the Warning Points system, Staff have access to a few other account actions that can be used when issues arise.
      • Thread Ban: Staff may ban a user – temporarily or permanently – from any specific thread. The length of ban is determined by the Staff Member.
      • Profile Ban: Staff may ban a user from all profile activity – outside of viewing profiles – for a set period of time. The length of ban is determined by the Staff Member.
      • Account Suspension: Staff may give temporary time off (during which time user's can still read the forums and be contacted by us) without long-term points on a user’s account.
    • As noted in the Appealing Staff Actions section of the User Guide members have a number of avenues through which they can further discuss and possibly change any Staff actions that they feel to be in error. See that section for further details on that process.
