I'm actually quite certain that both the Altar and Lhizahrd bricks are explosion proof.

They probably are, but I don't really just want to open terraria just to check that, so I'm waiting patiently for 1.3 right now and will probably play when it comes out

The bricks are of course explosion proof. Why would you have to fight plantera to get the key if you could open the temple with a bomb?
And the altar is explosion proof as well. I just tested it although I couldn't imagine that you can remove it without the picksaw.

The altar must have been wrongly spawned or something, when I was throwing bombs to kill the lizards it somehow popped off. Perhaps it was on trap blocks and when those were mined the altar didn't have space to stay on.

Well, that reminds me of that chest duplication bug. When a chest is not placed properly weird stuff happens if you try to destroy it.

Well, if you have a high enough melee speed, you can get any melee projectile to pass through a wall
