Biomes & Nature The Abyss [Alternate Underworld]

Introduction

-

Here is yet another Underworld alt suggestion. This time nautical themed! In contrast to the Underworld, a realm of eternal damnation, the Abyss acts as a purgatory of sorts. Deep sea themed creatures float among barnacle-encrusted stone and pools of shimmering essence, eager to sate their eternal hunger for young, fresh souls. For the first time in millennia, the Leviathan stirs...

Abyssmapfinal.png

Here's a rough layout of how the Abyss would look like. Despite being underwater themed, the Abyss is NOT full of water. It's a bit more mountainous than the Underworld, with a higher tendency to generate floating islands.

Liquid pools are a lot less common than in the Underworld, but there's a new hazard to fill in for that. The houses spawn on ceilings attached by a chain. Rather than generating with multiple floors, houses that spawn in the Abyss will instead spawn with more rooms attached to the sides, essentially forming little floating corridors.

To allow for both Lava and "Ether" to be available in the same world, lava spawns in Abyss worlds in the lower cavern layer, just above the ceiling of the Abyss. In worlds with the Underworld, Ether pools will spawn above the Underworld.

The Abyss also generates with an aesthetic fog effect. Not enough to block the player's vision, but enough to look real cool.

Sprites would be appreciated btw.

This is where I’d put my music reference. If I had one.
Edit: Here's a nice one suggested by Wall of fish

Ether
Ether is the liquid of the Abyss. Contact with it will damage the player for 30 dmg a second, dealing the "Soulbound" debuff. Players who touch ether will find that their fall speed through the liquid is significantly increased, so a small puddle can become a death trap if not treated with care.

For simplicity's sake, water and honey will create the same blocks that they would make in contact with lava as they do ether. Ether that comes in contact with lava creates aquamarine.

Basalt
A dark-grey volcanic rock that makes up most of the Abyss. Can be mined with a copper+ pickaxe.

Soulstone
A bright, slightly blue-tinted ore that can be used to make the Whispering Armor set. It deals 15 dmg a second to players that touch it, along with the Soulbound debuff. Upon breaking, soulstone leaves behind a half tile of ether.

Dreadroot
Dreadroot is a barnacle-encrusted grayish plant that grows in the Abyss. It grows in a fashion similar to vines, though upwards instead of downwards. Used to make naval-themed furniture. Most of the houses that generate in the Abyss are composed of dreadroot.

Aquamarine
Formed when lava touches ether. Aquamarine can be used to craft the Aquamarine Armor set, as well as Atlantis-themed furniture.

Pearl Block
Dropped by certain enemies, similar to living fire in the Underworld.

Soulforge
The hellforge of the Abyss. Enough said.

Lumenbloom
Replaces fireblossom in the Abyss.

Naval Mine
These are the second hazard of the Abyss. They spawn as floating bombs attached to the ground with chains. Similar to spike balls in the Dungeon, they spawn offscreen like enemies. Touching the bomb will create a non-tile-breaking explosion that deals 120 damage to players and 60 dmg to enemies at point-blank range. The player can manually detonate a mine by damaging the bomb. Naval Mines cannot be detonated by enemies. If the player breaks the block that the chain is attached to, the mine will detach, float to the ceiling of the cavern, and detonate upon touching any tile.

Sprite
HP: 5
DEF: 0
DMG: 0
Drops: Sprite Banner

These are ambient critters can be found floating around the Abyss, similar to fireflies on the surface. They resemble little balls of white light. When caught, they can be used to craft a Sprite in a Jar, a light-emitting decoration.

Hatchetfin
HP: 40
DEF: 6
DMG: 54
Drops: Lumin Essence (3.33%), Black Pearl (1%), Hatchetfin Banner

These resemble little black fishes with hatchet blades sprouting out of them. Hatchetfins are typically nearly invisible against the dark backdrop, with their only visible feature being their single glowing eye. They become visible upon getting close enough to the player, attacking with short ranged charge attacks.

Phantom Diver
HP: 50
DEF: 12
DMG: 24
Drops: Lumin Essence (3.33%), Phantom Diver Banner

Phantom Divers resemble old-school deep sea diving suits, a blue glow shining out from within their helmets. Phantom Divers follow the typical fighter AI, though the height of their jumps are significantly increased.

In Expert Mode, Phantom Divers explode into blue flames upon death, in a fashion similar to Molotov Cocktails. The flames linger for a few seconds afterwards, dealing contact damage.

Apparition
HP: 64
DEF: 18
DMG: 36
Drops: Fry Cook's Hat (0.2%), Sailor's Knot (2%), Apparition Banner

The lost souls of sailors who drowned at sea. Apparitions don't launch projectiles, but rather have the ability to spontaneously summon phantom limbs from the earth. These "phantom limbs" are disembodied arms that rise 2-3 tiles out of the ground, dealing damage to players that that touch them, before dissipating after a few seconds. Before an arm is summoned, the ground will briefly glow and release particle effects.

They teleport around, similarly to the Caster AI.

Vengeful Spirit
HP: 120
DEF: 8
DMG: 40 (Ranged) 30 (Melee)
Drops: Hydra Head Staff (3%), Vengeful Spirit Banner

Vengeful Spirits resemble giant disembodied skull surrounded by blue flames. Their AI is similar to the Giant Cursed Skull AI. Every few seconds, the Spirit will open its mouth and release a volley of ethereal projectiles. These projectiles are rather inaccurate, but they have slight homing capabilities that tend to cause them to converge on the player.

Enthralled Spirit
HP: 140
DEF: 8
DMG: 40 (Ranged) 30 (Melee)
Drops: Primordial Pearl (100%), Hydra Head Staff (3%), Enthralled Spirit Banner

Enthralled Spirits are visually and functionally identical to their vengeful counterpart, though with green fire instead of blue. They drop the Primordial Pearl, which is used to summon the Leviathan.

Bottom Feeder
HP: 200
DEF: 10
DMG: 60
Drops: Bottom Feeder Banner

Bottom Feeders are four legged spider-like creatures typically found crawling around the lower reaches of the Abyss. While slow moving most of the time, Bottom Feeders incrementally increase in movement speed every time they hit the player. This effect stacks up, so it's probably best to stay away. They lack the ability to jump, instead moving through the landscape like the eventbosses.

HARDMODE

Stranded Soul
HP: 400
DEF: 24
DMG: 14
Drops:

The Abyss equivalent of the Tortured Soul.

Man O' War
HP: 600
DEF: 40
DMG: 60 (Ranged) 150 (Melee)
Drops: Siren Scale (1.33%), Davy Jones (3.33%), Man O' War Banner

These jellyfish-like floating terrors can be found navigating the upper reaches of the Abyss. Men O' War will always remain upright, letting their long stinging tentacles hang down and brush against unsuspecting players and deal incredibly high damage. Every once in a while, they will launch a salvo of fast moving torpedoes in the player's direction, which explode on contact.

Dragonfish
HP: 160
DEF: 16
DMG: 50
Drops: Lumin Essence (3.33%), Black Pearl (2%), Dragonfish Banner
Resembling their nightmarish real-world counterpart, Dragonfish are exceptionally agile, snaking around and about and generally being quite difficult to hit.

Body: 26
Tail: 14
Eye: 0

Undead Hand HP: 320

Head DMG: 50
Body: 36
Tail: 36

Inflicts Debuff: Entranced

"You can't seem to look away."

Despite its serpentine appearance, the Leviathan does not utilize the Worm AI. Instead, it will travel in one direction in a fashion similar to the Wall of Flesh. It isn't "tall" enough to occupy the entire screen vertically, so it makes up for this by "snaking" up and down like a sine wave as it moves. This additionally has the effect of making it harder to hit. If the player tries to get behind the Leviathan, they receive the "Befogged" debuff, which fills the screen with nigh opaque mist.

The Leviathan primarily attacks with its tongues, resembling grasping hands, which reach out from the Leviathan's maw like the Hungry. Typically their range is short, but they lash out every few seconds (like Chain Chomps from Mario). The Leviathan only spawns with 3-4 Undead Hands, which is the reason for their increased health.

Occasionally, the Leviathan will "retract" the hands, revealing the single eye in its mouth. The Eye's DEF is 0, so that's probably the thing you want to shoot at. If all of the Undead Hands are killed, the Eye will be revealed for the rest of the fight. During this stage, the Leviathan will launch volleys of 5-6 Wandering Souls and summon 2-3 Naga every few seconds.

Wandering Souls are green balls of flame with extremely unpredictable movements. Essentially, they switch their "AI" every few seconds, so one second they could be drifting off nowhere and the next they'll be homing on the player. Luckily, they dissipate upon being hit.

Naga are serpentine creatures regurgitated by the Leviathan. They follow the Worm AI, though they can move freely through air unlike leeches. They drop hearts upon death.

The "wavelength" of the Leviathan's sine wave-like motion decreases as its health decreases, making it harder to hit. Its movement speed, however, remains the same.

Oh my-my god this now, THIS is the freaking best suggestion I have ever seen :passionate::D:happy:

I remember having an idea like this but never posted any threads about it.

Anyways support, those sprites are really good (especially the leviathan). And i really love the deep ocean.

This is probably one of the best Hell Alts I've ever seen. (The Leviathan sprite is amazing!)

Edit: Maybe this as a music reference?

I really like this biome's overall aesthetic. It's like a combination of The Depths and The River by @Snickerbobble and @Izzabelle.

Reference Music

It's certainly foreboding, but it doesn't have quite have that mysterious, eerie, "alone in the dark" feeling that I was going for.

Thanks, I actually didn't realize how similar it was to Izzabelle's River alt until I was halfway through typing the suggestion.

As for the Depths, I pretty much scrolled through and copied the format item for item so I wouldn't miss anything. Which is why my suggestion is ordered almost identically to the Depths suggestion.

Gosh I'm bad at quoting.

Maybe thiz could work for the music?

(Slight suggestion)

The backround should have a large skeleton in it.
Like the one from the new crimson backround

That sounds pretty cool. Rather than a humanoid skeleton, it could be big fish or eel skeleton, or something like that. I'm too lazy to edit the picture, though.

I think the eel skeleton would the better choice because it could foreshadow the boss (and because the fish skeleton looks more prehistoric than scary or dark)

The new crimson backround (its a 1.3.6 spoiler) was dragon/eel like

Is the Leviathan a replacement Wall of Flesh?
