Casual The Cat Thread

The cats around our place have too many toes. The indoor cat has 22 instead of the normal 18, and at least one of the outdoor cats has double paws. That's right, two paws, each with three or four toes, per foreleg and probably extras on the hind legs too. I determined this from a trail of very distinct multi-toed / double-palmed pawprints in the snow this past winter.

They're called polydactyls, from Greek for "many fingers." Ernest Hemingway kept polydactyl cats, and there's a colony of their descendants at his home in Key West, Florida. Ours get along just fine, and the indoor one can even pick things up using his semi-opposable thumbs, which are extra-long and oddly shaped.
