Biomes & Nature The Crypt - An Alternate Dungeon

Shucks, looks like it’s time for a Dungeon alt. There really aren’t all that many of them on this forum, and for good reason: this biome is packed with content. Hours of effort have gone into this, and I’m not even spriting anything. Let me know if I missed anything, because that’s bound to happen.

-

The Crypt is a grim, twisted mockery of a fairytale. Visually, it resembles an odd fusion of a creepy catacomb and a gothic cathedral, whimsical spirals and gothic designs abound. Its color scheme is more distinctly composed of warm colors than the Dungeon’s blues and greens, and many of its contents are fire-themed to contrast the Dungeon’s more watery themed items.

Map_Crypt.png

Here’s a rough layout of the entrance. Its “main” room is actually underground, meaning that players will have to venture slightly into the Crypt if they wish to gather some of its loot before defeating the Crypt boss.

The Crypt’s innards are pretty similar to the Dungeon’s, though with more hallways and fewer rooms. These hallways have a tendency to turn at 90° angles more often than not. They can vary in size from claustrophobic corridors to grand hallways the size of the rooms they lead into.

Handora
~~~
Max Life: 6200/5900 (for each hand)
Damage: 25/50 (Contact) 20/35 (Ranged) 90 (Bullet)
Defense: 8/12
Drops: Lesser Healing Potion (5-15, 100%), Handora Mask (14.29%), Talon Grapple (12.24%), Book of Misfortune (10.5%), Handora Trophy (10%), Death Grip (100%, Expert Mode Only)
Handora is summoned by talking to the Old Man at night. It’s actually a twin boss, meaning that the player has to face off against two identical bosses simultaneously (they share the same health pool in Normal Mode, however). Each hand will shift through the following phases:
-Rock. Handora forms a fist and attempts to smash the player, repeatedly flying above the player and charging downwards.
-Paper. Handora forms a flat hand, palm facing the screen. Handora’s palm-eyeball will regularly shotgun volleys of slow-moving fireballs in the player’s direction, ignoring tiles. If the player gets too close to Handora while in this phase, it will cease shooting fireballs and will instead attempt to repeatedly karate-chop the player.
-Scissors. Handora forms a fist with two fingers extended in a V, like a pair of scissors. Handora will attempt to ram the player by charging back and forth.
Both hands will always change phases simultaneously, though typically they won’t form the same “sign” in the same frame of time.
In Expert Mode
Unlike in Normal Mode, both hands will have separate health pools. Upon the death of one hand, the remaining one will behave in a more aggressively, switching phases at an increasingly fast rate as its health drops to zero.
-Gun. Expert Mode Only. Handora forms a double-barreled finger gun, and will attempt to fire oversized, fast-moving “bullet” projectiles in the direction of the player. After every burst of gunfire launched, Handora retreats offscreen, coming back onscreen from another angle.
Cryptstone Brick
index.php
Sprites by @Muninn
Compose a majority of the Crypt. Come in orange, purple, and grey variations (matching the colors of the alternate Hardmode ores). These will be appropriately tinted to fit the Crypt’s general color scheme.
Cryptstone Wall
Come in brick, tiled, and slab variants, determining the spawning of Hardmode enemies.
Cryptstone Furniture
Cryptstone Furniture.png
Sprites by @Muninn
A set of gothic, Tim Burton-esque furniture crafted from different colors of Cryptstone Brick. This also includes other uncraftable pieces such as Crypt-specific lanterns, decorations, paintings, and faction banners, to which I won’t go into detail.
Velvet Furniture
A set of lavish, comfy-looking furniture. Crafted from Cursed Cloth.
Flame Wick
index.php
Sprites by @Muninn
A spooky-looking candelabra with two wicks. Inflicts the Flame Wick debuff, increasing enemy loot drop rates at the cost of sharply increasing their damage and defense.
Bramble Cluster
index.php
Sprites by @Muninn
A cluster of thorns that grow in the Crypt, similar to those found in the Corruption/Crimson. Deal 25 damage upon contact with the player.
Thorny Fiddlehead
Pictured above.
These normally appear as tiny little plants with little spiral-shaped heads. When stepped on, they have a small chance of transforming into a small cluster of brambles, damaging players in the process.
Platinum Chest
Replace Golden Chests in Crypt worlds. Locked variants spawn in the Crypt.
Bewitching Table
I found these to be more fitting in the Crypt than in the Dungeon, so these are what spawn. The Dungeon instead spawns in functionally identical Enchantment Stations.
Brewery Station
Functionally identical to the Alchemy Table.
Biome Chests continue to spawn in the Crypt, albeit with altered textures to fit the Crypt’s aesthetic.
Shambling Husk
Fighter AI
Max Life: 60 (Light), 94 (Heavy)
Damage: 30 (Light), 24 (Heavy)
Defense: 8 (Light), 18 (Heavy)
Drops: Cursed Cloth (1-3), Platinum Key (1.53%), Velvet Wand (0.4%), Clothier Voodoo Doll (0.33%), Tally Counter (1%)
The living corpses of once great knights and soldiers, now destined to patrol the endless corridors of the Crypt until they crumble to dust.
Shambling Husks act as basic armored fighter enemies, similar to their skeletal counterparts. They can spawn in two varieties: faster but lightly armored or slower and more tanky.
Possessed Mirror
Caster AI
Max Life: 45
Damage: 24
Defense: 2
Drops: Cursed Cloth (1-3), Platinum Key (1.53%), Velvet Wand (0.4%), Clothier Voodoo Doll (0.33%), Tally Counter (1%)
A levitating, ornate mirror. A featureless face can be seen peering out from within its frame. Every once in a while, the mirror will scream and take on a frightening visage, firing burning projectiles that bounce off of walls.
These projectiles can bounce up to three times, sharply increasing in speed every time they hit a wall. Teleport every random number of seconds, regardless of how many projectiles have been fired in that length of time.
Rat King
Tortoise AI
Max Life: 146
Damage: 32
Defense: 6
Drops: Platinum Key (100%)
A walking hive of filthy, thieving rats that work together as a cluster to attack anything that threatens to steal back their treasure: a single Platinum Key.
Move rather slowly, but can leap towards the player in a fashion similar to a Tortoise. Can also climb up the sides of tiles, but do so rather slowly.
Death Tome
Flying AI
Max Life: 42
Damage: 44
Defense: 2
Drops: Cursed Cloth (1-3), Platinum Key (1.53%), Velvet Wand (0.4%), Nazar (1%), Tally Counter (1%)
A levitating, leather-bound spellbook possessed by the same malevolent presence that seems to hang over the Crypt like a shroud.
They float around and attack by zapping the player with short-ranged magic bolts. Inflict the Cursed debuff.
Tainted Tendril
Plant AI
Max Life: N/A
Damage: 20
Defense: N/A
Drops: N/A
Dark, writhing manifestations of death and disease.
Typically spawn in small clusters of 3 or more. Unlike other plant enemies, Tendrils do not specifically target the player, rather just flailing around randomly (their range is shorter than most plant enemies). Invincible, like Blazing Wheels.
Guillotine
Guillotine AI
Max Life: N/A
Damage: 45
Defense: N/A
Drops: N/A
Tall, wooden execution devices, guillotines spawn standing still, blade raised.
They lack a collision box, so the player can pass right in front of them as though they were furniture. However, upon doing so, the blade will fall, dealing heavy damage to players who are standing under it. Inflict the Bleeding debuff.
Crypt Keeper
Flying AI
Max Life: 9999
Damage: 1000
Defense: 9999
Drops: Crypt Key (100%)
Fly in and insta-gib players who enter the Crypt without defeating Handora. Visually identical to one of Handora’s hands. Due to the layout of the Crypt, the "threshold" where the Crypt begins is around ~50-75 blocks lower than in the Dungeon, meaning that players have to traverse "deeper" into the Crypt in order for them to spawn.
“Sinister laughter emanates from the Crypt”
Mind Spider
Flying AI
Max Life: 160
Damage: 94
Defense: 24
Drops: Strange Hex (1-2)
They’re all in your head.
Strange, spider-like creatures that have a chance (1/15) of spawning when a Crypt enemy is defeated. Leave behind a creepy after-image effect wherever they move.
Chuck Dolores
Chuck Dolores AI
Max Life: 1300
Damage: 140
Defense: 32
Drops: Black Belt (8.33%), Tabi (8.33%), Black Umbrella (3%)
A gothic Mary Poppins-esque figure dressed in a bizarre combination of ballroom dress and standard karate attire, carrying a black umbrella.
Will often “leap” backwards away from the player to dodge incoming attacks. Attacks with leaping roundhouse kicks, short ranged but devastating if they land.
~STYGIAN LEGION – TILED WALLS~
Hollow Knight
Fighter AI
Max Life: 350 (Light), 560 (Heavy)
Damage: 65 (Light), 45 (Heavy)
Defense: 42 (Light), 60 (Heavy)
Drops: The Antidote (1%), Sprite in a Jar (0.25%), Mystic Rocket (0.33%), Iron Maiden (0.5%), Crow Feather (0.22%)
The souls of countless knights and soldiers, cursed to guard the halls of the Crypt until the end of time.
Spawn in two varieties, like the Shambling Husk. Inflict the Blight debuff.
Dream Eater
Fighter AI
Max Life: 300
Damage: 40
Defense: 10
Drops: Evil Eye Staff (5%)
Strange shamanistic spirits, Dream Eaters resemble tall, inhuman figures with deer skulls for heads.
Rather slow, they attack with dark magical projectiles that originate from between their tall antlers. These projectiles move quickly and travel through tiles, and are somewhat inaccurate. Projectiles that miss the player halt in midair for a half-second before re-firing themselves back in the player’s direction.
Teleport every once in a while. When teleporting, they play their death animations, making it rather hard to tell whether you’ve killed them or not.
W.I.G.H.T.
Fighter AI
Max Life: 380
Damage: 54
Defense: 30
Drops: Peacekeeper Revolver (7.64%), Rifle Scope (8.33%)
What does W.I.G.H.T stand for? Wholesome, Imaginative, Genuine, Hug, and Terrific, of course!
Masked manifestations of hatred, neither alive nor dead. Behave in a fashion similar to a ranged version of the Psycho, cloaking themselves and shooting at the player from afar.
Approximately 25% of all attacks dealt against the W.I.G.H.T will “miss,” as though they are wearing a Black Belt accessory.
Cheshire
Hovering AI
Max Life: 350
Damage: 60
Defense: 24
Drops:
The enigmatic grinning cat itself.
They attack by firing homing projectiles in bursts of threes. Teleport every so often. Upon doing so, they leave behind a clone of themselves at the spot they teleported from, which will continue to attack the player for 3-4 seconds before fading into nothingness.
~MASQUERADE HALL – SLAB WALLS~
Mime
Fighter AI
Max Life: 380
Damage: 54
Defense: 30
Drops: Phantom Boomstick (5.56%), Beret (8.33%)
Silent clown-like figures with painted faces. Attack with invisible shotguns, typically keeping their distance. Melee attacks inflict the Silenced debuff.
Scarlet Dancer
Unicorn AI
Max Life: 400 (Variant 1), 550 (Variant 2)
Damage: 55 (Variant 1), 70 (Variant 2)
Defense: 50 (Variant 1), 34 (Variant 2)
Drops: Neck Brace (1%), Sprite in a Jar (0.25%), Mystic Rocket (0.33%), Iron Maiden (0.5%), Crow Feather (0.22%)
A masked, ballerina-like figure, constantly pirouetting with one leg outstretched. The outstretched leg is always whirling around to repeatedly whack nearby players. Inflicts the Crippled debuff.
Harlequin
Hovering AI
Max Life: 380
Damage: 95
Defense: 20
Drops: Flare of Despair (5%)
Immensely wicked creatures, Harlequins hide behind humorous masks and familiar faces to draw their victims near. They resemble small, levitating pillars of smoke surrounded by several floating masks.
Similar to the Pumpking, Harlequins switch “faces” every once in a while, a purely aesthetic effect. Attack by firing fast-moving projectiles that detonate into large, colorful explosions upon coming into contact with any tile.
~FAIRYLAND DISTRICT – BRICK WALLS~
Cinder Ella
Fighter AI
Max Life: 380
Damage: 60
Defense: 30
Drops: The Cremator (5.56%)
Cinderella with a flamethrower, basically.
Along with the typical stream of flame, Cinder’s flamethrower will also occasionally spit out embers that linger on the ground for a few seconds. The flamethrower stream is rather slow to “track” the player, so it isn’t impossible to avoid.
Ragdoll
Fighter AI
Max Life: 350 (Light), 560 (Heavy)
Damage: 65 (Light), 45 (Heavy)
Defense: 42 (Light), 60 (Heavy)
Drops: Knitting Kit (1%), Sprite in a Jar (0.25%), Mystic Rocket (0.33%), Iron Maiden (0.5%), Crow Feather (0.22%)
Hand-stitched servants of chaos and destruction.
Use the basic Fighter AI. Inflict the Stitched debuff.
King of Clubs
Caster AI
Max Life: 300
Damage: 40 (Normal) 80 (Explosive)
Defense: 10
Drops: Ace of Blades (5%)
*Insert awful card pun.*
Throws card projectiles at the player like shurikens. These projectiles pass through walls, and somewhat obey gravity. Each card thrown will have a random effect:
- The card is razor-sharp, lodging into players they come in contact with and dealing continuous damage.
- The card is explosive. Detonates upon contact with the player for heavy damage.
- The card is multiplicative. Upon contact with the player, the card erupts into a flurry of razor-sharp cards that deal damage to nearby players.
The King of Clubs teleports regularly, vanishing in a flash of white smoke magician-style.
Wicked Witch
Wicked Witch AI
Max Life: 4000
Damage: 80
Defense: 30
Drops: Protection Poppet (10%), Kindled Spirit (6.67%)
Cackling manifestations of malevolence itself, the magical abilities of a Witch are unmatched in these parts.
Fly around on brooms in a fashion similar to Mothron, hovering still in the air for short periods of time before swooping down towards the player.
Rather than launching projectiles, Witches will instead spontaneously summon up to nine motionless balls of sickly-green flame in a variably-sized circle around the player.
This circle will quickly shrink, trapping and dealing nearly unavoidable damage to players who don’t manage to escape it soon enough. Once the circle has fully contracted to its minimum size it will turn inside out, sending the nine flame projectiles flying towards the edges of the screen.
~FROM HANDORA~
Talon Grapple
Hook
A long chain with a clawed hand at the end of it. Same stats as the Skeletron Hand.
Book of Misfortune
Magic Weapon
Damage: 34
Knockback: Weak
Use Time: Average
Evokes a festering bolt of dark magic. These projectiles “drip” small blots of dark magic below, essentially carpet-bombing any area you fire these over. Pierces once.
Death Grip
Throwing Weapon
Damage: 15
Knockback: Very Weak
Use Time: Fast
Rapidly throws shadowy hand-shaped projectiles. These projectiles, upon touching any tile, “crawl” along walls and ceilings like Blazing Wheels. These hands latch onto enemies, dealing continuous damage and damaging enemies that touch the affected mob.
Use Cursed Cloth as ammunition.
~CRYPT TREASURES~
Fire Ball
Magic Weapon
Damage: 16
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Very Fast
Fires a – you guessed it – fireball that slowly drifts in the direction of the cursor. These fireballs continue to follow the cursor even after more than one has been fired. Can last for up to 30 seconds, dissipating upon touching a tile or damaging 10 enemies.
Chrome Blaster
Ranged Weapon
Damage: 28
Knockback: Weak
Use Time: Average
A shiny-looking pistol. Trades the speed of the Handgun for damage.
Spire of Fire
Magic Weapon
Damage: 26
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Slow
Rather than firing a projectile, the Spire of Fire instead generates a “shockwave” of flame that travels along nearby tiles, bursting into a tall pillar of flame at the spot the cursor was clicked.
Dancing Light
Magic Weapon
Damage: 21
Knockback: Average
Use Time: Fast
By holding down the mouse button, the Dancing Light can generate up to five “dancing light” projectiles that circle around the player.
These projectiles dissipate and deal damage to enemies that touch them. Letting go of the mouse will fire the ring of projectiles in the direction of the cursor.
Morning Star
Melee Weapon
Damage: 23
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Very Slow
A silvery star-shaped flail. Similar in stats to the Blue Moon.
Palladium Buckler
Accessory
Grants the player 1 defense and immunity to knockback.
Melee Weapon
Damage: 26
Knockback: Very Weak
Haunted Sewing Table
Crafting Station
Can be used to convert Cursed Cloth into Velvet blocks and furniture.
Malice
Melee Weapon
Damage: 22
Knockback: Weak
Use Time: Fast
A purple yoyo. Same stats as Valor.
Grants immunity to the Stitched debuff.
Sprite in a Jar
Accessory
Summons a cute little glowing minion to light the way for you.
Mystic Rocket
Magic Weapon
Damage: 54
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Fast
Fires a bolt of mystic energy. Upon coming into contact with anything, the bolt transforms into a glowing globe of spiritual energy, from which a cascade of homing projectiles are summoned forth. The globe dissipates after a few seconds.
Iron Maiden
Melee Weapon
Damage: 80
Knockback: Very Strong
Use Time: Very Fast
A large sword made from the blade of a guillotine. Swings in a fast “slash” motion, but with a noticeable cooldown between slashes.
Evil Eye Staff
Magic Weapon
Damage: 52
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Very Fast
The incarnation of a thousand malevolent gazes. The Evil Eye Staff evokes a barrage of mystic projectiles that originate from a dark portal above the player’s head. If a projectile misses, it will halt in its track for half a second before re-firing itself towards the nearest enemy.
Peacekeeper Revolver
Ranged Weapon
Damage: 235
Knockback: Extremely Strong
Use Time: Very Slow
Fires at a high precision. Bullets fired by the Peacekeeper Revolver create disruptive sonic blasts wherever they go, allowing players to damage enemies even if they miss.
An even higher damaging, though slower, alternate to the Sniper Rifle, minus its scoping abilities.
Phantom Boomstick
Ranged Weapon
Damage: 21
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Slow
“That bullet literally came out of nowhere!”
Fires an incredibly inaccurate spread of seven bullets. For every bullet that lands, the damage of the remaining bullets are increased by 2. This means that, if all 7 bullets manage to land on an enemy, you will deal in total 42 extra damage.
Flare of Despair
Magic Weapon
Damage: 78
Knockback: Very Weak
Use Time: Average
Evokes a fast-moving projectile that detonates into a highly damaging explosion of eye-bleeding colors. This explosion additionally fires high-speed projectiles in all directions that linger on the ground and deal damage to nearby enemies.
The Cremator
Ranged Weapon
Damage: 35
Knockback: Very Weak
Use Time: Fast
“All men are cremated equal.”
Yet another upgrade to the Flamethrower. The Cremator, in addition to the typical flame, also constantly spits out ember particles that linger on the ground and explode upon making contact with an enemy. Uses Gel for ammo.
Ace of Blades
Magic Weapon
Damage: 68 (Normal), 86 (Explosive)
Knockback: Weak
Use Time: Fast
Fires a cascade of bouncing, homing card projectiles that stick into enemies, dealing continuous damage. Approximately 1/8 of the cards are explosive, and detonate upon contact with an enemy.
Protection Poppet
Accessory
Grants 3 defense. This defense increases to 8 when the player is below 100 health, along with a sharp increase in regeneration. Grants rapid regeneration to surrounding players when the wearer is below 100 health.
Kindled Spirit
Magic Weapon
Damage: 78
Knockback: Strong
Use Time: Very Fast
This is an awsome idea! I was sold as soon as i saw handora. Just the thought of somebody suggesting a master and crazy hand for terraria makes you buzz around with excitement.
Seems interesting. However, this is missing a lot of sprites.
I can't sprite for crap, so usually I just put in a few art-y things like the title art, since it always seems like those threads get more attention than just plain text suggestions.
It would be great if anyone wanted to make sprites for the suggestion, though.
Smash is love, Smash is life
Nice suggestion, I wish I was this good at art.
This looks amazing.
One thing, though; Isn't Expert Handora a tad powerful? I guess they don't have Damage resistance like Skeletron, but that seems like a lot of health. It's probably just me.
Yeah, expert Handora has more health that normal WoF (10,000). That's not up to me though
Expert Skeletron pretty much requires that both hands are killed in addition to the head, essentially giving it a total health of 11920.
Expert Handora has a total health of 12400, so it is a little powerful, given that its defense is so high. So I'll try paring that down.
I love your idea, but you seem to be waffling over whether or not to go for evil and creepy or slightly nicer.
I advise that your keep the dungeon's colors, and maybe change the descriptions to match a darker scheme of color.
In addition, I disagree with you on whether you are good at arty stuff. The hands look amazing.
I've never seen a dungeon alt, but I really like this - it has a cogent theme, its design is well fleshed-out, and the boss is both very clever and a good parallel to Skeletron. Two thumbs up! I look forward to sprites, if they're ever made.
What can I say, you did good. It would be a pain to individually address every balance issue (which is a reason I doubt something like this will ever be added) but most of them appear minor enough to be negligible. The only major problem is a shotgun dealing that much extra damage; it increases the DPS too much, especially with the "Jester" armor, which might even be worth using in hardmode due to its obnoxious set bonus (Jester + PM Rifle, anyone?) I suggest an additive bonus instead of a multiplicative one.
A personal grievance is that a Peacemaker Revolver would work better than a Peacemaker Rifle, without needing to change any stats. This may be seen as an Overwatch reference, but it's more so just that the Colt Peacemaker is one of the most iconic weapons in history.
As stated above your art/descriptions seem somewhat inconsistent, and might want to be made darker.
Good job on giant rats, but we need even more giant rats for this to be viable.
Thanks for the feedback, balance has never been my strong suit. I think of the stats more as "representational" stats, just meant to show how weak or powerful something is. These can easily be shifted by someone more knowledgeable than I at balancing.
The shotgun's damage and the Jester armor's set bonus were a little iffy for me, so thanks for letting me know. Though I'm not sure whether I should reduce the armor's defense, mini-crit potency, or mini-crit frequency.
You're probably right about the PM Rifle, it just felt weird not having a rifle weapon drop in a Dungeon alt.
The art was made pretty early on, so by the time I realized the theme was growing darker, I couldn't have been bothered to change it. It started out kinda like a traditional D&D-esque dungeon, but as time went on I realized that having a more gothic fantasy theme would be kinda cool.
And now I have that song stuck in my head all over again, goshdarnit.
Here’s a rough layout of the entrance. Its “main” room is actually underground, meaning that players will have to venture slightly into the Crypt if they wish to gather some of its loot before defeating the Crypt boss.
[/SPOILER]
I like the idea, but I have one problem. The Crypt's main room being underground could cause problems with the Crypt Keeper spawning. Yes it would be rare, but on one world (Xbox) me and my cousin got a spawn that was so low giant worms would spawn. Maybe the Keeper can only spawn if the player is 50-100 blocks below the main room?
Yeah, that's a good idea. I hadn't taken that into account.
I just realized, is this a reference to the "Cwypt Cweeper" puppet man?
You mean that creepy little puppet dude from Tales of the Crypt that haunted my nightmares for years? I actually never really considered it while I was making the suggestion, just that "Crypt Keeper" sounded pretty catchy.
Support support support support support support support support support support. This is actually the best suggestion I've seen on the TCF in my short time here so far, and heck, it doesn't even have sprites! I shall give you the 10 gold I got when I accidentally sold my True Excalibur.
This suggestion is outstanding. I may work on some sprites for this soon (sorry if they're mediocre, in not that good)
