Weapons & Equip The Daybreak should probably be a Ranger weapon and get replaced by something else.

So mage’s consistency comes from being inconsistent?
Thats the unique part of it, it has unique weapons that wouldnt really fit under a category.

By changing an established melee weapon that's tied to a melee themed pillar to ranged? You'd have to reimagine it into a Vortex weapon, which is already a ton of work as it'd need to be reworked given Vortex is thematically different from Solar, give Solar 2 new weapons, then give every other pillar a new weapon. (Though we might see every pillar get a weapon in 1.4.5 because of the new Stardust Whip)
Thrower weapons were only changed to ranged because they were ammo, and there was a spear weapon in the game before the Bone Javelin, which was the Scourge of the Corruptor, and even after that there's been a few more melee weapons with a stacking DoT (Tentacle Spike and Blood Butcherer)
I don't get it, personally.
I don't really agree with that. There are only two spear-type weapons that are Ranged - or three, if you count the Harpoon Gun. All of the other ones are Melee. The Daybreak also isn't consumable, and they're about as far away from each other in progression as two weapons can get. And as Lynxical said, thrown spears and stacking DoT are both things Melee has done before.
Daybreak and Bone Javelin were also both added to Terraria in the same update. I'm not focused on theme, I was just trying to point out that the two weapons are mechanically the exact same except for two major differences; one of them is made for endgame instead of earlygame, and one is reusable instead of consumable. I don't think those differences are large enough to say that those weapons are totally unrelated though.

Throwing spears with long distance that stick into enemies and deal DoT aren't exactly common in Terraria, and this is the first I've seen of two different classes both having weapons (and rather unique weapons at that) that are functionally identical (along with looking pretty much the same). If someone can come up with another example of that happening though, feel free to show me.
Edit: Okay Magic Dagger exists but I forgot about it because nobody uses it. I'm pretty sure it's also explicit that it's supposed to be a direct upgrade to the throwing knife though.

Again I don't really see many upsides to actually changing Daybreak to ranged, and I don't think it should happen, but I want to point out the reasoning for why it could make sense.

Holy the worst idea Ive seen yet, you are saying that a spear (a melee weapon) that comes from a melee themed pillar should be ranged? :red:, Ranger already has a lot of options throughout the game, and vortex weapons are already strong enough for them. Why would you go and change a Melee themed spear into a Ranged weapon just because it has a longer range? Daybreak is perfectly a melee weapon and does not need a change.

No it does not work well for Moonlord. Good luck dealing with the projectile spam while you are on Moonlord's :red:.

I dont support this, it being a Throwable Spear is much cooler honestly.
Just for accuracy, I said specifically that the functionality/mechanic should be given to the Phantasm. The Daybreak could then be replaced by something more fitting or reworked. I don't know why this is such an insane idea. Iyts not impossible to imagine some mechanics to make a viable true melee weapon. It just takes some imagination. Jeez.

Also, the Solar Eruption works perfectly fine against moon lord. Suffering from the projectile spam is honestly just a skill issue. A good flying mount and knowledge of his attack patterns are enough. The Solar Eruption works perfectly fine and doesnt even take that long to kill with. Honestly, I have more trouble with the Daybreak but that's just me.

I get that its a javelin/spear and that it falls under a melee aesthetic but that isn't enough to make it a melee weapon. It operates more like a ranger/thrower weapon. In my opinion, it should be a bow-type ranger weapon with a slower fire rate and a charging function that determines the amount of damage over time and duration of the arrow's lodging. I think it should have a charge mechanic because we have a lot of bows but they all behave like guns. Then, the aesthetic could be changed to the vortex theme.

Edit : To clarify, the stacking/lodging functionality of the Daybreak would be given to the Phantasm to make it function more like a bow with a charge mechanic. The Daybreak itself would then be replaced with something fitting.

To replace the Daybreak, there should be a true melee weapon that actually fits in its function. Perhaps a sword, halberd, glaive, scimitar like those used by solar pillar enemies, something, anything that doesn't shoot projectiles. We have enough weapons that shoot projectiles without any justification other than the ever present threat of contact damage. This calls for more imagination. Mechanics that make things work without relying on projectiles.
My thoughts: I have always assumed you're "throwing" it, not summoning a magic projectile. So I have no issue with it being melee instead of some other class. I do however kind of agree that there should be some sort of endgame true melee weapon, but as others have pointed out, that would make it very difficult to use against the moon lord. I suppose what we COULD do is make it thrust forward like a giant spear and then have a shockwave of fire that applies the daybreak effect. That seems like it would make it feel more melee without nerfing its actual usage too much.

As for the charging mechanic, I actually posted that exact idea a while ago, but I would want it to apply to ALL early game non magic bows, charged for greater velocity and damage so they actually feel like bows and not weak guns. And perhaps the others, later game/magic bows, such as phantasm, could be charged to release a burst of arrows all at once.

What "accuracy"? And Phantasm has Phantom arrows that are strong enough. You dont need to give this mechanic to a Ranged weapon.

What makes you think that Daybreak doesnt
fit to the melee class? It comes from a melee themed pillar, It is a spear (a melee weapon) and you use it with your pyhsical strength. Its perfectly a melee weapon. There isnt a reason to "rework" or "replace" this. I might be biased though, since it is one of my favorite melee weapons (and I dont want it to be replaced/reworked).

Why do we need more True melee? You already have a lot of True melee in the game.

Of course you say "Skill issue" because you have nothing else to say. Just know that being that close to a boss like Moonlord is a death sentence. And if Solar Eruption worked better for you than The Daybreak, that is your problem. Daybreak has longer range therefore gives safety, it has more DPS and Damage, and the Daybroken Debuff of it stacks. Daybreak is, I think, the most powerful melee weapon in the game, after Moonlord drops and Zenith of course.

By accuracy I was referring to being accurate about what the post said. I was just making a small correction.

So the thing that makes the daybreak seem more akin to a ranger weapon to me is the rapid fire throwing. To me it would have been alright if you throw it and wait for it to come back with more damage over time as compensation. If you can just throw it endlessly, then that's just a gun with a melee skin. To me, mechanics are way more important than themes and appearances.

And when I said skill issue its not that I "didnt have anything else to say". I actually meant it but not as an insult or anything. You can definitely defeat the Moon Lord with the Eruption if you just keep moving and learn the patterns. Personally I prefer a good flying mount like the Witch's broom. In rain, the Shrimpy Truffle works even better with its damage and speed boost. The speed boost can even keep you out of laser range if you need to retreat and regenerate.

We do have a handful of true melee weapons, but most are either ore swords with no special mechanics whatsoever or somewhat special weapons with mechanics that border on the impractical. The ones that are really good are very few.

Have you considered why that might be? Omnipresent contact damage makes it so that “true” melee doesn’t exactly work on a conceptual level. Those weapons you listed are perfect examples of that.
“True” melee is kind of a stupid distinction to make anyways. “Melee without projectiles” doesn’t work as an explanation because spears and shortswords are projectiles, and flails never leave the player’s hand so they are arguably “true” melee except with more range than some “false” melee weapons. Again I restate that terraria’s classes are not clearly defined, and that the biggest difference between them is damage type and nothing more.

While javelin-type weapons were previously given to ranger in pre-hardmode, this is because they use ammunition*. Once hardmode starts, consumable weapons cease to exist for magical reasons. Then, by boomerang logic**, all thrown weapons went to warrior. Therefore, the Daybreak is consistent with Terraria as a whole.

*Ranger automatically receives weapons that consume ammunition.
**One of warrior's major themes are hunting weapons, which is why boomerang is a part of warrior. Any historical hunting weapon is on the table for warrior.

P.S. Before you bring it up, Harpoons are definitely guns.

There are already melee weapons in Terraria that can be infinitely thrown, like The Shadowflame knife, Vampire Knives and Scourge of the Corruptor. Daybreak isnt just the only one. It makes sense as to why you throw them infinitely, since its not like a weapon you get late into the game is gonna be consumeable or anything like that.
If you want to make it so that Daybreak isnt infinitely thrown, then thats boring to me. And if you make it so that it can only be thrown, lets say 8 times (since Daybreak spears can only stack on a target for 8 times at a time) then you should increase its damage and DPS since it will be less thrown. Since it is infinitely thrown you can always hit a target with it, but if the amount of spears you could throw was limited it should have a higher damage and DPS than it does now.

And while Solar eruption works for Moonlord, every pillar weapon does. Its just that one of them is better than the other one, and Daybreak is better against Moonlord than the Eruption.

You explained perfectly like this.

Solar Eruption is true melee in my book and it works well against the moon lord. Some people even use true Excalibur or other weapons. Literally any mechanic not involving projectiles can be imagined. It's not impossible.
It's a spear that you throw. Get over it
