All Terrarians know of, and fear, the Crimson and the Corruption. Their continuous expansion is a pressuring blight on the existence of all things living, which become a mockery of their former selves as they are taken over. Their minions take terrifying and, most of the time, disgusting shapes, covered in blood, mold and pus.

Recently, however, word of a new expanding threat has reached our inns and taverns. Returning explorers speak of a land where the sun never rises, where the bones of the dead, picked clean, rise anew bathed in blue flames to pillage and destroy once more. Scholars have taken to calling this mass graveyard 'the Decay', an accurate description for the mysterious plague that has began devouring the land. While the Corruption and the Crimson require more immediate attention, this new threat should not be underestimated.

6bRJkOZ.png

The Decay is my proposed third alternative to the Crimson and Corruption. Part of the evil biomes' appeal is, of course, the ick factor. The Corruption and Crimson both play with body horror and gore to some extent, so what I'm proposing today is a cleaner but equally menacing threat. The Decay strips away living beings of their flesh, preserving only the most durable and rudimentary essence: the bone. Couple that with a spirit/ haunt thematic and we get what I feel is a strong Corruption alternate contender.

ENVIRONMENT

CuzR0VX.png

An unwary adventurer, about to clash with the guardians of the Decay for the first time.

The Decay is a gloomy constantly dark environment. Perpetually shrouded in fog and darkness, the sunlight barely manages to permeate its thick mists during the day. During the night, the biome is submerged in absolute darkness. However, most enemies give off a certain amount of blue light and are thus easier to spot.

Numerous tombstones dot the landscape, framed by ominous black iron fences; they spawn naturally and can only be broken (not collected) with a pickaxe. Deathwood Trees also spawn on the surface.

A player stumbling across a Decaying Altar in the Underground Decay.

Underground, the Decay's equivalent for Crimstone/Ebonstone is Gravestone, which are actually compressed, solidified bones.

The Underground Decay is also home to the Spirit Skulls, which can be broken to obtain items and summon the Decay's biome boss.

Max Life: 110

Defense: 6
Devourer equivalent. Uses the same AI.

Max Life: 3000 (Maiden) 800 (Handmaidens)

Defense: 50 (with Handmaidens) 13 (without Handmaidens)
Biome boss. Has two phases; spawns with two Handmaiden familiars that will attempt to ram the player and are highly resistant to knockback, while the maiden will circle the Player and shoot balls of blue energy.
Phase two starts either when the Maiden reaches half HP, or the two Handmaiden familiars are killed. The Maiden 'enrages and will gain increased damage, attempting to ram into the player for contact damage while also occasionally shooting balls of spirit energy.

Damage: 70
Max Life: 220

Defense: 34
Corruptor equivalent. Fires a ball of blue energy that inflicts the Weak debuff.

NESTMOTHER

In contrast with their grotesque appearance, Nestmothers are actually peaceful creatures that will usually avoid conflict if possible. Tasked with transporting souls across the Decay, they are guarded by the denizens of the decay and their own Dreadspawn.
Damage: 30
Max Life: 450
Defense: 40
Slow, non-aggressive wall crawlers. They always spawn surrounded by Dreadspawn, tiny quick wall crawlers that are aggressive and will seek out the player to deal contact damage. Dealing damage to the Nestmother will always spawn 2-4 Dreadspawn that will imediately aggro on the player. Thr Nestmother also spawns Dreadspawn passively.

DREADSPAWN

Tiny bits of bone and sinew imbued with soul fragments, they fiercely protect their Nestmothers. Although small, in high numbers they can quickly overwhelm even the best prepared adventurers.
Damage: 55
Max Life: 120

Spawn with and from Nestmothers.

BONE HORROR

Bone horrors can suppress their spiritual flames to better camouflage themselves in the darkness of the Decay. They attack by charging with lightning speed at unwary victims.
Damage: 90
Max Life: 350

Defense: 29
Bone Horrors can walk on any foreground block, but not background blocks (think Snails). They crawl along the Underground Decay tunnels, waiting for the player to enter their field of view, at which point they attack by quickly zipping between walls in an attempt to hit the player. Unlike the other Decay enemies, they do not give off light, making them harder to spot.

MARROWMARE

The rattling of their bones can be heard from miles away. Once they start pursuing an enemy, they never stop until they harvest their soul.
Damage: 70
Max Life: 400

Defense: 28
Uses Unicorn AI.

BamHKLa.gif

VAETTIR

Vaettirs are amalgamations of spirit and bones. It is not atypical for the spirits to part and swarm their targets when attacked.
Damage: 110 (Head) 55 (Body)
Max Life: 700

Defense: 22
Uses worm AI. When a section is killed, splits into shorter Vaettirs (think EoW)

Oh crap a new alternate biome suggestion..

*after reading* This is a really interesting biome. It's theme revolves around darkness and bones and stuff, and it works really well. It's a shame that this thread only includes some of the corruption alt content, but I still love it. Support!

I'm wondering if there should be a destroyer counterpart and/or a cursed flame/ichor counterpart, or other drops, like dark shards. I like how you included rarities. Pretty good! Keep working on it!

This is really well-made. Although it would be kinda annoying in-game, I like the idea of an eternally dark and spooky biome.

This is really well made. I especially like the enemies. Support!

EDIT: (Btw, where is DJ Sona Nr. 3? x D)

Maybe inflict frostburn instead of "On Fire!" ? AMAZING Suggestion though!

What are the stats of Decidite Armor? Only the Defense and Set Bonus are explained.
The Bolt-Action Rifle's stats should be modified, as it's pretty much an improved Musket, which shouldn't be the case, as the Undertaker is different from the Musket, so the Botl-Action Rifle should behave differently from either. It could have somewhat different stats (Or the Musket's current stats, in which case the Musket's stats could be modified by making to fire very slowly, probably as much as a UseTime of 60, but buffing it's damage to 40-50).
The Wraiths share a name with an already-existing mob, so one of them will have to be renamed.
A Light Pet and an Acessory should also drop from Spirit Skulls. The former could constantly be on top of the player's head. The Acessory should be an offensive item, as the Panic Necklace is defensive, while the Band of Starpower simply buffs the Player's Mana. The acessory could spawn poison gas upon attacking an enemy.
What are the Decaying Spirit debuff's effects? How can it be inflicted by the Player, considering that it seems to be the Decay's counterpart to Ichor and Cursed Flames?

This looks AWESOME, i love it! Only thing i would change is the name of the marrowmare to nightmarrow, but other than that this looks awesome! Where did you get your inspiration?

Why not make this a Hallow alternate?
I always already took The Corruption as a landscape in the state of constant rapid decomposition.
Other than that, this has my vote.

Also, for a secondary boss; Gashadokuro. Giant angry skeleton.

As for orb smash comments, how about:
"You feel an overwhelming cold in your marrow..."
"The calcium in your body starts vibrating..."
