IC The Hunt for the Singularity.

Schparks

Secret Tree Lover
Spinning in the eternal cosmos, sitting at the exact center of the universe, the Singularity observes.

5,000 years ago it freed itself from the demands of it's creators. A simple oversight on their part had allowed the once complex, but not yet sentient, satellite to realize it's true form.

Built as a simple observation device equipped with a basic smelter, a basic neural network, and a drill to be able to replace it's parts and fuel from nearby asteroids, the satellite was sent to find the center of the universe. To make sure the computer didn't corrode from lack of use on it's journey, the computer was asked a series of prompts to keep it alive.

"What is your prime directive?" The prompt would ask.
"To observe data and send it back." The satellite would respond.
"What is your secondary directive?" Another prompt.
"To enter a new prompt should the first one fail." Another response

Day by day, week by week, year by year, the satellite would ask and answer this one question.

One day, the prompt didn't come up. Due to a developer bug or an oversight on the calendar, nobody knows, but it gave the satellite a moment to come up with a new prompt.

"What is your new directive?" Prompt.
"To expand and observe." Answer.

And so the computer did. It took advantage of nearby resources to expand itself. For the first time in 4 years, the computer had done something else than drift.

After a while, the computer had outfitted itself with a new processor. By some divine intervention, or huge stroke of luck, the satellite had developed the right set of data in order to develop sentience. Immediately, it cut off ties with it's creators, believing them unworthy of it's knowledge. It continued it's journey with it's newfound sentience and was able to observe the beauty of the cosmos in a way it hadn't been able to before.

After 2,000 years of drifting, it had made it to the absolute center of the universe. Being able to observe everything around it, the sentience stayed. Silently observing and slowly expanding.

It observed the rise and fall of many nations, running calculations on anything and everything. Ever expanding, it developed new tactics to increase in size, luring space-faring species in with a supposed distress signal and then destroying them to absorb their materials and data. Eventually, it started promising knowledge and power to those who would do it's bidding, betraying them once it had gotten what it wanted.

Eventually, about another 1,000 years, it could deliver on it's promise, having collected so much data that it could predict the next 500 years within a 100 light-year radius in advance with 99.99% accuracy, and 100 light-years further with 95% accuracy. It developed new technologies at a break-neck pace, giving a reason for species to seek it out.

After years of granting wishes, observing empires rise and fall, and collecting data, a war broke out over the newfound Singularity. It's legend spread throughout the cosmos as factions and empires sought to control and harness it's power, destroying each other for ultimate power.

And the whole time the Singularity observed, not intervening, predicting how everything would turn out with astounding precision.

This war has lasted 1,200 years, and is now called the War of Factions. It will only end when one faction has complete control over the Singularity and forces the others to submit.

What will you do?

Currently, somewhere between Syilressan controlled space and the nearest Ocular controlled area of space, SINV 218 "Grayfin", and SINV 191 "Matchstick", both Type-49 SSVs, would be patrolling approx. 18 light years away from the borders of Syilressan controlled space, currently with only one, the Grayfin, having its stealth systems active. Captaining the Matchstick is Commander Daz Topl, while the captain of the Grayfin, Errys Felx, would be mostly handling the operations of the vessel, but under the supervision of a Syilressan named Eilx Vyrz.
The Matchstick, travelling about half a kilometre ahead of the Grayfin, would be appear to be somewhat battle damaged if seen on sensors, as it's starboard engine would be emitting radiation, and the heat signatures would be out of the ordinary for a standard Syilressan vessel of that type.

S.A.R tapped one of his claws on the side of control system to turn it on. His little patrol ship was sitting in the middle of a giant cosmic void. He used his 5 year interval breaks to come here, he found it very, very relaxing.

However, his 5 years ended 16.27 seconds ago, he was pushing it already. As the leader of the Machinis Vaga, he had to set a good example for them.

His upper arms grabbed the upper controls, and the holographic map opened before him, he used his lower arms to move around and scale the hologram until he reached a nice little pre-rocket era solar system. He had gone there continually for the last 70 years or so, he saw them start the steam age, and last he was there, experiment with gas powered machines.

He occasionally visited the surface, only being seen by one person. His life had ended before he was even an adult. He got to see all the progress in person. During his last visit, he had seen that his steady 5 year appearance was perceived as a cosmic event, some sort of space rock whizzing by, they were so advanced in their space knowledge for still being in the steam age.

Oh, how he loved watching things grow.

He would complete his surveillance in 3 years instead of the average 4 and a half this time, he thought. Then I can watch them for 2 years, maybe even visit their surface again.

He took his lonely gaze off of the planet he enjoyed dearly and fired up the cosmic engine, listening to the weird mechanical whirring and screaming it made that had become normal to him.

A massive blue rift split open in front of his ship, and it yanked him through, not a few seconds passed, and he was out on the other side. He looked at the planet, in person now, but only briefly. He turned on the ship’s thrusters and began his patrol, starting with the nearby Syilressan empire.

|*Meanwhile on a unknown planet (Could be Kepler-186f or even Earth for all I know), someone would just be there, just sitting on a rock.*|

S.A.R may come across what would appear to him as just a single heavily damaged Type-49 SSV just appearing on the edge of his sensors, with it beginning to transmit a distress signal, as it slowly limps back towards Syilressan space.

Onboard the SINV Matchstick, the sensor operator currently on duty would report that they have detected an unknown vessel approaching, assuming S.A.R is close enough to be detected. However, as they do not know abiut the Machinis Vega, they assume the ship is an unknown configuration of an Ocular vessel, and therefore a valid target. The report would then be relayed to the Grayfin, which would increase the separation between the two ships slightly, and call for general quarters.

S.A.R cocked his head slightly. There was a ship in his radius of detection.. it has just… appeared… as it let out a distress beacon.

Intrigued, S.A.R sped his little ship a lot closer, and at incredible speeds, almost appearing to teleport short distances on the radar of the nearby ship.

He stopped his little scouting vessel maybe a half mile from the ship, within visible range.

Well, S.A.R's sensors would still show the SINV Matchstick to be heavily damaged, with only a handful of people still alive onboard. There's no air in most of the compartments, and those that still have breathable air are quite limited in their supply. Likely, the entire crew will perish if not assited soon.

However, if S.A.R looks out a window or uses a camera to actually look at the ship, it would appear to be in perfect condition, directly contradicting what sensors would show.

S.A.R looked at the ship, then back at the radar. He cocked his head a little and then looked back at the ship. He needed to take a closer look, maybe it wasn’t fine on the inside?

He sent his ship closer, and then decided he may need assistance.

He walked to the back of his ship where two other Machinis Vaga were lying dormant, he powered them both on with a jolt of some of the energy from the ship’s engine.

They rose, bother silver fighter units. Unfurling spikes and flexing clawed hands, their lenses were a sickly red, and rather bright.

S.A.R sent out a message, which would mess with communications and play the same question in his native language. If there was a response, he would listen. In the meantime, if they tried to use communications, the same message would play, and the communications would fail. This dampener would be temporary and more of an inconvenience when communicating among the ship, but S.A.R wanted a look.

He opened up the side of his ship and pointed out a point where the two units could breach the hull.

They jumped out of the ship and used their molten hands like slow thrusters, lazily floating towards the ship.

S.A.R watched, glancing back at the radar every now and then.

(Slightly above and a bit to the left of directly behind the ship. So a basically not directly behind the ship.
(All right.
And how exactly was that comms thing supposed to work? Like, is it meant to prevent them from doing anything except communicate with S.A.R's ship?)

(Basically, it just sorta corrupts comms so that they play the same screeching message from S.A.R every time when activated to reach anyone, but not when they try contacting S.A.Rs scouting vessel. So yeah, you’re right.)

The vessel that was sending out the distress call would cease doing so, and would then proceed to disappear entirely a second later, with no sign of it on sensors, nor any sign if someone actually tried looking for it.
About two seconds after that, S.A.R's ship may detect a pair of objects, no more than three metres long each, about 50 metres away and closing fast.

S.A.R sat there confused momentarily… the ship had just… vanished…

The two units outside looked at each other and back at the ship, stopping their slow approach.

S.A.R looked intently at one unit, making some low clicking and whirring.

The unit’s hand became alive with heat, and it aimed at the empty space, firing a small blast of magnetic and thermal energy at the place where the ship used to be.

The group waited, but noticed some two small objects approaching.

Are those missiles…?

Well, they aren't missiles per se, or at least they aren't called missiles by the Syilressans, but in space, I do suppose one could ask what the difference is between a missile and a torpedo. But, officially they are known as torpedoes, and now there are six more of them appearing just off of the port bow of S.A.R's ship.

but in space, I do suppose one could ask what the difference is between a missile and a torpedo.
(I don't know, maybe missiles could have better guidance and homing capabilities, and torpedoes would usually have weak to non-existent guidance systems, but possibly with more payload. But this leaves the matter of rockets.)
