The Long Dark

Toxic

Terrarian

"The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster."

Below is a fan-made trailer for the game.

I've played this game for more than 30 hours now, and I have enjoyed it very, very much and felt like I had to share it around more. The Long Dark is an indie game developed by Hinterland Studio Inc. As you read above, it's main focus is exploration and survival. You do not face zombies, aliens, or other humans. You must brave the wilderness and, currently, wolves and bears. It is in Early Access on Steam, so for now all you can do is start a sandbox game and see how long you can survive. But even though the game is currently in an early stage, it is very immersive and enjoyable. You'll be traveling from house to house, looking for that elusive rifle, or just trying to stay alive by finding soda cans, candy bars, medical supplies, and so forth. If you'd like to get a little better of an idea, this video will certainly help.

And yes, I'm sure you noticed a bit of low FPS on the above video, but since that came out, the game has been much better optimized, as well as a more intuitive HUD, wolf fighting mechanics, and more. But still, keep in mind that this is all still alpha gameplay! Once the game is officially released, there will be a story mode, more animals to fend off, more areas to explore, and well, anything you might expect to find in a game like this. If you'd like to check out the game more, click on the logo up top for the official website, or go here for the Steam page. I highly recommend trying out the game, it definitely deserves some more support! Also feel free to comment about the game if you have it. The more opinions the better! And if you want to read my own personal review on it, click here.

And finally, to close, I'll post some screenshots that I have taken in-game. There aren't many for right now, but I plan on taking more when I get the chance.

Bump. Added another screenshot and a link to my review. Such a shame not many are interested :/

Yeah those wolves are always the problem. Especially Fluffy... :P

So far the sandbox mode is challenging. So dark at night you cant see anything in a cabin. Need to get that ice broken and do some fishing. Also, the foraging and snow melting needs to be done for sure to keep you warm and hydrated. I like to have a peek at the story mode now.

I actually think the darkness is great. A lot of survival games have it to where you can see just fine in the middle of the night, which is completely unrealistic. TLD really makes you prepare ahead of time so you don't get lost at night. I'm also still waiting eagerly for the story. Haven't played the game in a while but once story mode comes out, I'll probably be the first one to beat it.

I have it, and sunk about 3-4 hours into it. It has potential, but in it's current state (last played it the end of february), I stopped playing. The wolves seem to be Fenrir himself, as I can't sneak by one over 100 feet away and have it not see me. I don't know what went wrong, because at the very beginning of the game, I don't remember things being like that.

Everything else about it is great, though.
