Terrarian
There's nothing like Martial Arts to add some close and personal close-quarters combat into the mix. Martial arts is essentially a close quartering of Magic.

The New NPC - The Sensei
Wait, wait, wait, wait. Another NPC?

Yeah! Why not? Who else can teach you the essentials of Martial Arts? Certainly not you're Arms Dealer.

The Sensei is simply a vendor of various items which are materials to master your combat skills. The Sensei will come randomly after you defeat Plantera in hardmode.

Arsenal
Of course you're not armed with a Terra Blade equivalent, but you do have your fists, but oh boy can you use them...

Weapons are separated into tiers as in how effective they are. This is mainly to explain what I've just worded out to you.

Tier 1:

Hadouken:
68 Damage
Costs 25 Mana
Average Speed
Fire a ball of Great Force.

It's a Street Fighter reference, of course. A Hadouken is a good way to keep an enemy back, especially later on when you need to keep an enemy back. Basic but helpful.

Rising Dragon:
28 Damage (x4)
Costs 40 Mana
Slow Speed
Strike with a rising uppercut.

Not only does the Rising Dragon punch damage your enemy up to 4 times, but also gives you a jump powered for 15 blocks of jump height.

Tornado Kick:
25 Damage
Costs 35 Mana
Average Speed
Spin around damaging enemies for 4 seconds.

You can control your left to right movement for 4 seconds while you're damaging enemies. So It's to escape from clusters in a different way. It can also accumulate some damage onto bosses if you find it suitable.

Tier 2:

Tiger Strike:
40 Damage
Costs 27 Mana
Fast Speed
Dash in a direction with great power

This attack allows you to dash each time you attack. So not only can you get forward, you can deal significant damage doing so.

Raging Fist:
23 Damage (x6-x8)
Costs 17 Mana
Fast Speed
Unleash an overwhelming amount of punches towards your foe.

This attack can deal a lot of damage quickly, but doesn't have much range. But it's fast use time may make you rethink overlooking it.

Lotus Strike:
18 Damage
Costs 32 Mana
Average Speed
The attack may cause a random debuff on an enemy. (Does not cause monster/item exclusive debuffs like Horrified or Chaos State)

It's useful for bringing your opponent down to snuff. Overall

Tier 3:

Enfocus:
Costs 75 Mana
Snail Speed
Provides a buff to all stats for 25 seconds.

This small and costly buff could mean the difference between barely finishing your boss fight and losing it at the last minute.

Midareyuki:
60 Damage (x3)
Costs 80 Mana
Slow Speed
Automatically targets nearest enemy and attacks it. (Targets strongest enemy nearby)

Good for finding a tougher enemy and bringing it down. You also can deal up to 180 damage unbuffed.

Free Energy:
Costs 10 Mana (Minimum)
Damage Varies
Snail Speed
Consumes all Mana to damage enemies in an area around the player.

Sometimes if you can't solve things as easily you can simply turn yourself into a human grenade to deal some superb damage. Effective for clustered enemies, especially waves.

Obtaining Arsenal Items
That's a good question. As I've mentioned no way to get the items, how will you obtain them. Before this I mentioned the Sensei sells a Scroll. It's a material, and costs 5 Gold. Well you have that investment.

If you give the Sensei a Scroll, he will ask you a price. The minimum being 1
Silver_Coin.png
.

1
Silver_Coin.png
Initially gives you a 1% chance for success. Every
Silver_Coin.png
after the first increases the chances by .2%. So 5
Silver_Coin.png
increases the chances 1%

1
Gold_Coin.png
increases the chances 5%

and 1
Platinum_Coin.png
increases the chances 10%

This is only for the 1st level of abilities. The ratio of success to # to divide current % is as follows:

1:1 on Level 1.
1:2 on Level 2.
1:4 on Level 3.

Meaning that in order for you to get success on higher levels you have to pile on the money. The system should work that Level 3 will be tested first and if that isn't successful than level 2 then so on with level 1 and eventual failure.

It almost makes you not want to bother. But the techniques are powerful. Also if you fail you consume the scroll. It's a gamble if you're up for it.

Armors
No, you're not clad in full armor, especially when the purpose of Martial Arts is to fight with nothing. There was a small reference to MMA with the Gi sold by our newly beloved Traveling Merchant, but we can go a step further from there:

Kenpogi:
1 Gi
(10 of All Boss Souls)
8 Souls of Night
8 Souls of Light

10 Defense
+9% increased damage and critical strike chance
+12% movement speed

This is the more capable hardmode version of the Gi, and along with it, the base to several helmets providing bonuses to the new weapons. The Following helmets will provide the full set bonus:

Divine Wind:
4 Tattered Cloth
25 Souls of Might

1 Defense
+18% increased movement speed
+40 Mana
(Set Bonus: Killer is damaged based on remaining mana, Gale effect upon jumping and falling)

The Divine Wind is a reference to the basic meaning of Kamikaze, which this set bonus clearly promotes. As long as you have plenty of mana you can go out with a bang dealing some hefty damage. The Con is you can't really use your magic and you just have to die.

Centennial Sentry:
4 Tattered cloth
25 Souls of Sight

4 Defense
+11% increased damage and critical strike chance
+20 Mana
(Set Bonus: Standing still increases defense and damage the longer you stand up to 35% standing longer also emits more light)

The Centennial Sentry is a small play on words. It allows you to more or less be more of a ranger in combat, standing still. It arguably has a better buff potential than the Shroomite armor, but doesn't help when you're attempting to crit someone.

Great Harmony:
4 Tattered Cloth
1 Light & Dark Shard
25 Souls of Fright

2 Defense
+6% Damage and critical Strike Chance
+8% Melee speed and movement speed
+60 Mana
(Set bonus: Increases Mana Regeneration rate, All attacks cause confuse, Pulses emitted much like Hallowed armor)

This gear is the more optimal of the two in using martial arts, however it doesn't have the greatest of set bonuses but is a clear midway in stat boosts. If you can't decide to be a suicide bomber or a ranged threat, you can take the compromise.

Undying Fury:
(Purchasable from Sensei)
9% decreased damage and critical strike chance
(Set Bonus: After a Critical hit greatly increase speed and damage for a few seconds, fire particles when moving at full speed.)

It looks like a crappy helmet. It TAKES away damage AND critical chances, and not only that it's sold by the Sensei? Why would you buy it? Well, you can consider the great buff you get from it. Yeah that works. So, it's not a bad investment, especially if you're not very willing to spend the souls.

Accessorize!
Accessories are a clear necessity in Terraria, especially if we're focusing on mastering the Martial Arts. Using a scroll on a calligraphy bench (Similar to the Extractinator) will provide you with a random accessory of the following.

Balance
(Randomly obtained from Calligraphy) (worth 30 Gold)
Decreases cooldown for Mana Recharge.

Fortune
(Randomly obtained form Calligraphy (worth 30 Gold)
Decreases mana usage when mana is low.

Tiger
(Randomly obtained from Calligraphy) (worth 30 Gold)
Removes mana regeneration penalty upon moving.

Body
(Randomly obtained from Calligraphy) (worth 30 Gold)
Increases defense when mana is low.

Heart
(Randomly obtained from Calligraphy) (worth 30 Gold)
Increases Magic Damage when health is low.

Character
(Combine with Balance, Fortune, Tiger, Body and Heart) (Worth 50 Gold)
Decreases cooldown time and removes movement penalty for Mana Recharge
Increases Defense and Decreases Mana usage when Mana is low
Increases Magic Damage when health is low.

All these accessories do aid offensive magic quite a bit allowing you to use it more efficiently and capably in combat.

Conclusion
These are all my ideas regarding the implementation of Martial Arts. It will take a while but you gain some powerful techniques to use in battle if you want to take the risk.

I ressurected this topic from the Old TO and made sure to fix all the errors on it. Sprites are STILL wanted; mainly for items, not abilities.

All criticism is accepted and if you have ideas to improve on the suggestion, feel free to do so!
