Everyone has at one point thought, whether we would see any major content after Moonlord. And while it wouldn't make sense for us to be fighting another boss (since Moonlord is meant to be the big, bad villain), maybe something like a Moon Crusade could work.
The Concept
My idea is (relatively) simple. After Moonlord's defeat, there was a dispute within the cult. Some wanted to bring the Lord back, while others sought revenge. This caused them to separate.
Now labeled as heretics, these revenge hungry cultists have equipped themselves for battle, and are preparing to launch a Moon Crusade against you.
As suggested by Orchamut, the event is wave-based, similar to the Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon events. There are 20 waves in total, with various cultist and moonlord-inspired enemies.
Behind his back is a big eye, which he'll sometime use it to shoot a giant laser.
Once the boss reaches half health, he'll enter 2nd Phase and become faster. At this point, the big eye will also turn into the Remnant of Cthulhu and begin moving on its own. This eye acts like a "True Eye of Cthulhu" enemy, and it's invincible and will only die once the Grand Heretic is killed.
While the Grand Heretic is in his 2nd Phase, he will very slowly lose health over time (his body can't handle the power and is destroying itself).
The Zealot is a tricky enemy that begin spawning early-mid waves. They shoot semi-homing projectiles that will fly into you if you get too close. The projectiles are destructible, though.
.
You start the event by using the Crescent Shaped Warflag during the night. This item is always dropped by Moonlord (on first time defeat), and can afterwards be crafted using Luminite, Silk and Ectoplasm. It can also be dropped during the crusade.
Other than the summoning item, this event will also give a wide variety of vanity items, weapons, accessories, and so on.
This idea came to me in the spur of the moment, so there might be lacking some things.
If you guys have any suggestions, I'd be happy to add it to the list

The Grand Heretic has taken a tiny fragment of Moonlord's powers for himself, and is using it to empower his army. While he's alive, all nearby Archers, crusaders and zealots will become faster, so you should get rid of him as quickly as possible.Behind his back is a big eye, which he'll sometime use it to shoot a giant laser.

I haven't gotten around to doing any art for this, but these are examples of the type of loot they could drop:
.
- Crescent Shaped Warflag (summon item): 12% drop chance from Grand Heretic. 1% from normal enemies)
- Tooltip: "Summons the Moon Crusade. They attack at nightfall..."
- Cloth of The Celestial (Accessory): Increased movement speed and damage, but in return, you'll also take more damage yourself. "Strength, but at what cost?"
- Crescent Scepter (Magic Weapon): Shoot bursts of pink orbs. They will fly into enemies that get too close to them. Unlike the Zealot (who drops the weapon), your projectiles actually have piercing and will continue to attack until they despawn (3.5 seconds)
- Grand Vendetta (Acceessory): When you take damage, summon a temporary mini Remnant of Cthulhu to fight alongside you
- (suggested by SeaTyrant54) Lunar Quiver (Accessory): When shooting arrows, a pink arrow will also be shot from the sky
- Sea of Stars (Fishing Rod): A fishing rod with a way higher chance of catching rare fish and items
- Crusader Helmet (single armor piece): A helmet with a lot of defense, but that's about it
- A grand heretic vanity set
- And a normal heretic vanity set
- Grand Heretic painting
- and so on...
.

Skeletron Prime
Perhaps a ranged accessory?
It could be something like the "Lunar Quiver" and drop an additional, pink colored (like the remnant) arrow to drop out of the sky

Great idea. It kinda reminds me of a pseudo phantasm.
However, maybe the arrow stats should be toned down a little? It could easily be overpowered, I think.
Maybe give it stats similar to a phantasm arrow (which deals 30% damage in total)

This is one of the most reasonable post-Moon Lord suggestions I've seen, but I personally would want to see a kind of postgame version of Frost Moon/Pumpkin Moon.
I like their mechanic of a time-limited event with increasingly difficult waves of bizarre enemies, and I think more events like that would be fun, especially one balanced around post-Moon Lord gear, so I think something like that could maybe be done with this.
One concern I have about a post-Moon Lord invasion though is, I don't think it should be able to spawn randomly without player input, since defeating Moon Lord should make the world feel safer. So a manual method to summon it available straight after Moon Lord would probably be good.

honestly this is amazing
also, the enemies should drop a boatload of money, not only for upgrades but also for "compensation", since both the holiday moons and martians are grindable as
but the lunar pillars give zero money whatsoever

We could easily turn this into a wave-based invasion. Archers and warriors spawn first (maybe with a bit more enemy types added), and Grand Heretic spawns towards the end. Then also adjust droprates a little and everything should check out.
And instead of the event being random, we can add it as a guaranteed drop from Moonlord.
Maybe name the summon item Crescent Shaped Warflag, and give it a tooltip like "Summons the Moon Crusade. They arrive at nightfall" so players know what it does.
