Items Throwing Knives/Javelins shouldn’t be Ranged.

Should all Pre-Hardmode Throwing Knife/Javelin weapons be Melee instead of Ranged?

In 1.4 one major change made it so all Throwing equipment now belonged to Ranged, at first I didn’t care but then it really got to me. This might be a bit controversial but I think that the
Bone Throwing Knife, Throwing Knife, Poisoned Knife, Shuriken, Javelin, Star Anise, Frost Daggerfish, and the Bone Javelin should all be classified under Melee instead of Ranged, I think the explosives are fine being Ranged, but I have a problem with the javelins and knives, while technically they are a “ranged” projectile, they’re also thrown, and what else do you throw? That’s right, a boomerang, all jokes aside it just really bothers me because there are SEVERAL weapons that are thrown but are classified as Melee, for example, Shadowflame Knife, Vampire Knives, Scourge of the Corruptor, and even Daybreak are Javelins/Knives but are those are Melee, the biggest argument is that the weapon I mentioned are consumable, but there was never a time it was mentioned that Melee weapons couldn’t be consumable, and maybe I’m just biased but I’ve always felt that Melee has been SUPER underwhelming in Pre-Hardmode, just due to the range, or lack thereof, and even the dps has always been the same as a Minishark, which is super depressing to me. This would also help Melee have more options than just Flails, Starfury, Enchanted Sword

As a quick thing I forgot to mention, it would also help diversify what is and isn’t Melee, the line between Melee and Thrower was already really fuzzy and this doesn’t help with it, I really want Melee to be more fun in Pre-Hm but it’s hard when lots of weapons are just... bad

The thing is that throwing knives, shruikens and javelins are all consumable, which is Ranged’s thing, not Melee’s. Exactly zero melee weapons are consumable and almost every single ranged weapon either is consumable and attacks using consumable resources.

Class boundaries are really decided much more hy the weapon’s gimmick than their form. Whips are summon becaude they boost minions, even though they are held by hand. Magic dagger and toxic flask are hand thrown, but are magic because they use mana, same with magic guns like laser rifle.

Because consumable ranged weapons are... well, consumable, they really fit much better with Ranged than with Melee, because things being consumable is Ranged’s whole identity and not a part of Melee.

Technically it wasn’t Rangers thing until 1.4, it was Throwers thing before then, the only consumables Ranged had were ammos which you could throw. I can understand why it would be “Rangers thing” but to me sometimes it seems they just kinda lazily slapped everything from Thrower to Ranged. I really like Melee but it’s probably the most fundamentally flawed class that exists in Pre-Hm just due to the way it works. I wish Melee wasn’t forced to be as Close Ranged as it is right now because it’s AWFUL to fight bosses in Pre-Hm. The consumable part is really the thing keeping those weapons from being Melee, because if lets say it took 150 sturdy fossils to make a non-consumable Bone Throwing Knife, then it could technically be Melee, but then again, there’s never been a rule that said Melee can’t have consumables, it really belonged to the Thrower class which later got removed and merged with Ranged and now Ranger owns the consumables. I dunno I just wish Melee was good in Pre-Hm because it’s pretty bad how it is now, the weapons are weak, the fights drag on for far too long, it’s just unfun.

The thing to remember is that Throwing only existed in the lifespan of 1.3. Before that, all thrown weapons were part of Ranged and had been since 1.0.

Having consumable resources is supposed to be Ranged’s thing and was since 1.0, and thrown ranged weapons were just another take on that. You used the consumable directly instead of feeding them into a bow or gun. The addition of throwing class seemed to be a temporary experiment that didn’t work, and after it died the weapons were given back to the class they originally belonged to.

Since Ranged had thrown consumables from 1.0 to 1.2.4 and Melee never did, and Ranged has consumable resources for damage anyway and Melee doesn’t, it makes more sense as a Ranged weapon.

That makes sense, actually, I still wish Melee works better in Pre-Hm because it’s pretty trash atm

To me, this is only an issue when people chose to play pure classes, which was never the intention of the game. There is no specialisation of character in the game, and no punishment for using items outside your chosen class, as is usual with a true class based game. Any class restrictions are entirely self imposed, so any perceived lack in pre-HM is (at least in part) due to a rejection of more suitable weapons. Even armour has no class pre-HM, which suggests to me you should use whichever weapon gets the job done, regardless of class.

Melee has more options than flails, Star Fury, or Enchanted Sword; yoyos, boomerangs, swords and if you're in dire straits even pickaxes.

For me, if anything, some items should be moved out of melee. A melee weapon is one that hits while in your hand as opposed to one that does so after leaving it. It is hand to hand combat. Daybreak for example cannot be used as a real melee weapon as you cannot whack an enemy with it - only throw it, so should it be classed as melee?

I feel like this is an issue people have with the way Melee/Warrior is, I don’t see the problem really, Melee would be abysmal if it didn’t have some of the weapons it has, boomerangs leave the players hand but they return back to the player, but I don’t think it would be fair to Melee if 50% of their weapons were turned into ranged weapons, where Rangers wouldn’t even use them because they have better options. Melee is this strange class and while it doesn’t make sense because it’s not Hand to Hand combat, it’s still this unique mesh of weapons I enjoy playing, it just doesn’t feel right for people to think that Melee should have half of their weapons removed because it wouldn’t be fair, the weapons make sense being Melee to me, like Shadowflame Knife, maybe something special is happening that makes it non-consumable, but I enjoy the weapon and for some reason it just kinda fits with Melee, and I think it’s because Melee speed affects how far you can throw it, which then kinda affects how Melee is, the faster you swing the farther you can throw knives, which makes sense

Also biome weapons, Ranger is already broken, it doesn’t need or deserve Lifesteal.
