Biomes & Nature To Sea a Better Ocean a Large Ocean Revamp Collaboration

Duke Fishron
Terraria Ocean expansion Idea By @Baconfry, @Dragrath, @Zesko the Magic Man and later (Wisp), TheQuietBisharp

Thank @Pinelord for the sprites(and some creative imput)
Origonally this began as separate projects however Baconfry organized collaboration in part so that ocean biome weapons could be added.

As of now the following challenges need to be resolved before this can be truly posted.

1)-Finish Gear/crafting (need weapons!) This biome update is to make hardmode Ocean a Post Plantera option for those with RNG issues and need better gear

2)-Sprites

Section in brief(for lazy people)-

-Ocean is lacking compared to other biomes

-Real world oceans full of facinating and exotic creatures

-Ocean harder than other biomes to explore due to water

-Reefstone spawns water when mined below o feet similar to hellstones lava spawning but with an amount of water equal to its volume

-Basult-requires 200 pickaxe power spawns water when mined below o feet

-Powerful enemies and unique hazards ensure the biome will be challenging to hardmode players(scaled to hardmode dungeon)

The ocean is known to be a biome lacking the development of many biomes in Terraria. This suggestion seeks to resolve that by expanding the ocean biome needs an expansion however it faces some unique challenges notably the threat presented by the inability to breathe in deep water and the consequential need for accessories and potions to aid in exploration.
Additionally I have heard many complaints about the lack of exploration in hardmode this suggestion seeks to resolve as many of these issues as possible.

-The notable changes to the ocean would bean expansion underground spreading outward with depth similar to how the underground snow and jungle biomes spread outward on the surface.

-While the undergound ocean can be explored prehardmode and contains some enemies it is difficult to explore prehardmode and will be fairly empty

-To facilitate this change reefstone(better name pending) would be added to serve as a stone counterpart expanding the ocean down to the lava level. Additionally when mined below o feet reef stone would spawn water similar to hellstone. This means that Diving gear and breathing rod will be insufficient to explore the biome. (gills potions aren’t useless anymore!)

A lower area will also spawn below the underground ocean where the lava layer begins. This area would feature a massive open cavern and would be inaccessible pre mech as the primary blocks that make up the biome (basult) would be impossible to mine with less than 200 pickaxe power rendering the biome post mechanical boss.(or they could just not spawn yet?)

Additionally any player sequence breaking in would find all crafting recipes require a Mythril Orichalcum anvil in order to craft and that the enemies spawning are comparable in strength to hardmode dungeon/jungle.

The ocean will also feature its own hazards and enemies to be explored upon later.

Clams-background objects they are harmless and can be collected with a pickaxe but there is something similar that isn’t so harmless…

The abyss

This unique mini biome occurs when the ocean comes to an end at the transition to the lava layer a unique property of the abyss is it would be open similar to hell this region features its own enemies. The borders of this area are made of Basalt a tough black material good for building tough structures (immune to explosives) requires 200 pickaxe power to mine. Hazards
Black smokers

Passing through these underground structures inflicts blackout and the burning debuff for as long as the player remains in the smoke

Can be collected(because why not?)-only works under water though!

Gear-Toxic ink-Used to craft a magic weapon:

Ink storm features a squirt of ink firing similarly to the aqua scepter and golden shower (basically a post plantera version that lacks the ichor) can inflict poison debuff

Calamari can be crafted into a cooked form and eaten to provide well fed (5 min duration)

Armored Chtin-post Plantera armor ingredient (on to add list but bobbit worm has taken some of its thunder need a bit of inspiration here I think summoner needs it the most)

Shark teeth-Used to craft more shark themed weapons

So far have Sharkrang- literally a boomerang made of shark jaws they chomp down of a victim before returning dealing bonus damage to the last target before the return deals less damage on the return thrown like a chakram, returns like a normal boomerang

Drops: Stingray Barb (5% chance) Banner

Remora(link here)
70 HP
Defense 2
Damage 30
Notes: An uncommon enemy in the Ocean biome. They are more likely to be found attached to sharks. Sharks will have a chance to spawn with a Remora attached, which gives them a different sprite), and when such a shark is killed, the Remora is released. Remoras have a 10% chance of dropping a Suction Pad..(courtesy of Baconfry)

Waves: Actually projectile enemies created by a wave spawner enemy that spawns off screen on the surface of the ocean. These waves travel across the surface and crash on the shore, if they hit a player the player takes insane knockback. These waves however deal no damage but are unkillable however disappear upon reaching land. Only one wave is active at a time.

Rough waves-stronger more frequent waves that are dangerous to players these spawn in the ocean during rain. Unlike the pervious several can exist on screen at once. Deal damage to players

Notes: Spawns at night

Gear

Stingray Barb
A very fast but rather short spear that has a 33% chance of inflicting Venom.

Greater Stingray barb: hardmode version of the prehardmode barb possesses somewhat longer reach (still relativly short) and a 50% chance of inflicting venom

Suction Pad:An accessory that allows the user to cling to background walls by hitting the up directional key. Once attached, you may hit down to fall normally, or space to jump.

Pismire armor(class hybrid armor)

10% mana cost reduction
10% chance to not consume ammo
10% improved melee speed
Defense 26

Set bonus isn't set in stone but will be used for ambush armor
Options(some more advice needed here set bonus two is looking to be the main choice)
Set bonus1: When the user hasn’t attacked an enemy for 5 minutes(arbatraty time right know) they gain a buff that lasts 30 seconds after dealing damage to an enemy This buff grants an additional 50% damage and 21% crit while wearing the armor minions will not attack unless the player has attacked within 30 seconds

Set bonus2: attacks do +50% damage and 21% crit if the target enemy has had full health within x seconds

All critters have 5 HP and are passive to the player unless stated otherwise
Surface:
-Clam
Notes:can be used as bait (10%) can drop as an item when digging ocean sand underwater

mussel(Underground)
Notes:stationary
can be used as bait (5%)

hermit crab(surface/underground)

tiny crab(surface)

shrimp(underground)

sea anemone(underground)
Notes: can spawn on walls as well as sea bottom

Anchovy(surface)
Note: Spawns in the surface ocean. Like Baconfry’s Minnow(put link here) when at least one Anchovy is present, their spawn rate becomes quite high. It can be caught with a Bug Net, and either released, stuck in a terrarium/aquarium, or used as bait. (25% power.)

Vent shrimp(critter)
Notes: passive can be caught with the bug net and is not harmed by hazards such as black smokers. 30% Bait power

Other things:
Sharks would as Baconfry sugested drop Shark Gills
-Shark Gills
Slowly restores breath while moving in water. It only kicks in after 2 seconds of movement, though. In real life, all sharks (except bottom dwellers like the Nurse Shark) must continually swim to keep breathing, so that was pretty easy to fit into game balance. 2% drop rate from Sharks.(from Baconfry's Marine Biology thread) This would be a very useful aid to exploreing this improved ocean as breathing isn't easy down there (no air)

-Anchor now found in the underground ocean as a background object

-Coral Furniture crafted at growth accelerator(spawns in water chests)

-Sonar goggles-Tool tip uses sound to see underwater
effect: with these equipped underwater you could see moving silhouettes that try and flee if you approach them catch one and you get a fish from the pool of fish in that environment (basically a more unpredictable alternative method for fishing for those who don't want to perform the fishing minigame by the rules)-Odds of catching what you want are the same regarding the body of water however.

Water Turrent -powerful canon weapon that can only be used under water rare drop(idea by bacon fry)
"Oh yeah, I had a bunch of water-related ideas that spawned off reading a thread by crackshotCerberus. One was a turret that can only be placed on water (being considerably more powerful to compensate). It's just the basic skeleton of an idea, but I think it would be lovely."-Baconfry

items by Zeskiron-not sure what to do w/ some of these but some should make good additions anyone have better ideas to implement them?
lucky bone:
fishing power increase 15%

Fly-fishing Lure(modified by Baconfry)
100% bait power (never runs out)
Crafted: Red Husk, Violet Husk, Cyan Husk, 20 Feathers
Only usable with the Fiberglass Fishing Pole.

Any advice to improve this is welcome!

Man, a thread this large is going to be a pain to edit.

In any case I find these additions to be really awesome. What I would recommend is that the bleeding debuff increase the spawn rate of certain sharks drastically while in the water. Of course that might be a little too mean. I recall mentioning this in a really awesome thread by Baconfry. That's all I can really say for now, I might be back later.

Edit: Wait a minute, I got mentioned in this. There would be celebratory gunfire if it wasn't 9:40 P.m.

yeah the thread was in the eorks for months, and by works i mean sitting with no progress

yay its up! but I see several typos
Ah feel free to point them out Its listed as a work in progress I apologize for the delays I've been having a rough time of late

I wasn't sure if I mentioned you its a bit late so I'm kinda tired If you have any comments that can help improve this let me know

Edit you may notice I have not fully stated the gear this is due to the fact balancing gear is much harder than enemies as players have multiple gear and buff interactions

Hmm. I don't know if I like this or not. While I do agree that the ocean deserves some love, I don't know if it requires it's own underground section. Also, it doesn't really make sense for the underground to be post-mech if it's overworld counterpart is safe even for new players (as long as you don't head down into the water).
But the main reason why I doubt this is not because of those things. No, the reason why I doubt this is that the ocean only really exists as a border of the overworld. It's not really meant to be a fully-fledged biome, like per say the Corruption. BUT! It still requires SOME love, that's for sure. Maybe some proper Hardmode enemies, like you suggested. :)

In the current form yes the ocean is basically only a boundary but does that really make something biome worthy? And as you might notice the underground ocean is made accessible prehardmode however the enemies don't spawn yet just like how the hardmode dungeon requires a trigger. Also remember the devs rarely copy a suggestion in entirety the real point of a suggestion is to inspire them

There where I was mentioned.

I thought something like a peacock mantis shrimp would make a decent "turret" minion. Those things do have an impressive strike force. I see something like that working by having the turret part be invisible and the projectile to look like the peacock mantis shrimp. It would quickly strike and move back to its original location. Just an idea.

so sounds like it should be a hardmode drop but from what I wonder...

Perhaps it can be found in sunken chests? You do need more gear for that. Hell, I'd be willing to volunteer my seafury to add to that if I wasn't too lazy to rebalance the stats to be post plantera instead of post fishron.

great! sunken chests do need some stuff but frankly coming up with interesting gear is difficult... I really want to add more gear that is less RNG driven for the post planters point of the game as I've noticed most of the weapons are RNG heavy...

Wow. This looks pretty awesome. Cant wait to see it when it's done. Also, if your looking for a new word for Reefstone, how about Shoalstone?

Well why not make it a full fledged biome? There is so much potential for items and enemies. Besides what do you have to lose by making it a biome with an underground? Some filler space in the underground area? Just adding enemies in hardmode doesn't work well because there's no space really to do anything meaningful. Also without it being a full fledged biome a biome weapon would be impossible to justify.

Also who said that it is simply supposed to be a border?

Wow. This looks pretty awesome. Cant wait to see it when it's done. Also, if your looking for a new word for Reefstone, how about Shoalstone?
hmm shoal doesn't really work as a shoal is a large group of fish... blocks of fish would be very weird.... hmm could work for the crimson variant...

Edit @crackshotCerberus how rare should the water cannon be (assuming its a chest item)?

Besides what do you have to lose by making it a biome with an underground?
I understand the other points you made, but this? Realistically speaking: if there were to be an Underground Ocean biome, what would it be? Cus if you ask me, it would all be underwater. Underwater caverns. And while that is not necessarily a bad idea, the problem would be to make sure that all that water doesn't pour out into hell. That would create empty, boring caves at the bottom.

why not dump the whole thing into hell? It would be post-mech, and while there are harder enemies down there by now, there is nothing much to gain by being down there except a couple obscure weapons. besides, there are two oceans. If you accidentally dump one ocean in there, you can be sure to keep the other one safe.
