Weapons & Equip Vanity Slots for Pet and Light Pets

For standard pets, there's dozens of unique and interesting options available and for the longest time, they were purely cosmetic. Now, though....with Chester having been added to the game with Deerclops, that's no longer the case. Chester is an amazing pet, and I'm glad he got added to the game, but but by being the *only* pet with added, meaningful utility, it's unfortunate that choosing anything but him as your pet is effectively shooting yourself in the foot. I always carry the Money Trough on me for easy access to my piggy bank, giving up that one inventory slot. With Chester, though, that wasn't necessary. If it is possible, a vanity slot for pets would solve this easily. Admittedly, though, it'd really only be useful in this specific case. Alternatively, giving every pet the qualities of the Money Trough/Chester is an option as well, but I'm uncertain how much work that'd be on the Dev's. In short, I'm just suggesting for Chester's advantage over other pets to be brought back down so pets return to being entirely a cosmetic choice.

For light pets, it's a slightly different case. As you progress through the game, the light pets get better and better before ending with the Suspicious Looking Tentacle. Personally, my favorite light pet is the Jewel of Light from the Empress, but being pragmatic about it.....it doesn't compete with other end game pets. Ideally, I'd love to just equip something like the Suspicious Tentacle then overlay it with the Empress pet.

There's so much vanity in the game that what you're actual equipment is hardly matters when it's been hidden by something else. I believe both these changes would further enforce this.

Aside from the Eye Bone, the pets really don't do anything except follow you around. The light pets I can kind of see, but normal ones, nope.

What I'd suggest instead is making Chester not occupy the pet slot at all, and just having it in your inventory will have him summoned, and you can use your cosmetic pet in the pet slot alongside him.

The Zephyr Fish used to destroy vines and grass when it hit them. This was a legacy feature, but adding unique characteristics to each pet can be done. Now, as for disguising one pet as another: cool idea. I personally lay would like it. My favorite pet is probably the cursed pumpkin seed or the amber mosquito, but I always go with Chester for functionality. I would like to be able to extrapolate one Chester being a mimic a little more.

Yeah, it did cross my mind to give all the various pets small bonuses and unique traits, but that would be considerably more work for the devs and considering pets were primarily meant to just be a fun follower your player could have tag along rather than anything with a direct function. I do like the idea of it, though.

Estee: 25% more falling stars. Stars do 25% more damage to enemies(Star Cannon/Shooter go brrr)
Dynamite Kitten: Explosives deal half damage to the player(no more insta-death due to trapped chests if you have decent armor)
Companion Cube: .01% chance for *slain*(no lucky coin shenanigans) enemies to drop a platinum coin)
Junimo: Joja Cola gives Well Fed for twenty minutes instead of two minutes
Mini-Minotaur: Can assist in navigating the Dungeon and Jungle Temple by highlighting traps and false blocks
Propeller Gato: Player gains an addition 15% vertical ascent momentum when flying
Parrot: Pirates Curse only has a 50% change of spawning on Pirate Captain death
Baby Dinosaur: Occasionally digs up ancient desert fossil when walking on sand in the desert
Baby Imp: Fire Imps have a 50% lower spawn rate or perhaps their projectiles don't travel through blocks anymore.
Baby Grinch: 50% higher drop chance of presents
Shark Pup: Increases spawn rate of sharks by 50%
Baby Eater: Corruptors no longer fire Vile Spit at you
Squashling: Double the amount of pumpkin dropped when harvesting
Master Mode Boss Pet: Removes the chance of additional pet drops from the bosses drop table, allowing greater chance of other drops.

I'm just spitballing here, so feel free to poke holes in the idea, but if the option of giving pets various utility buffs came up, these would be my ideas. I'd hope none of them are too powerful and more than a few are quite niche, but it'd encourage people to search for the different pets and maybe even use some of them depending on the scenario.

I personally don't believe that Chester having utility makes it the "best" choice... you can always have the Money Trough, or just carry around a Piggy Bank to place, and once you have the Void Bag, Chester becomes pretty redundant. The functionality of Chester doesn't really outweigh the fact that I like the look of other pets more. But I can't tell other people how to feel.

That's fair, and eventually, I'd just rather give up the utility of Chester for a pet I actually like the look of as well. That said, I really do appreciate not having to carry the money trough around. How many times do you get stuck wishing for just one more slot in your inventory?

Once I have the Void Bag... almost never, actually.
