For standard pets, there's dozens of unique and interesting options available and for the longest time, they were purely cosmetic. Now, though....with Chester having been added to the game with Deerclops, that's no longer the case. Chester is an amazing pet, and I'm glad he got added to the game, but but by being the *only* pet with added, meaningful utility, it's unfortunate that choosing anything but him as your pet is effectively shooting yourself in the foot. I always carry the Money Trough on me for easy access to my piggy bank, giving up that one inventory slot. With Chester, though, that wasn't necessary. If it is possible, a vanity slot for pets would solve this easily. Admittedly, though, it'd really only be useful in this specific case. Alternatively, giving every pet the qualities of the Money Trough/Chester is an option as well, but I'm uncertain how much work that'd be on the Dev's. In short, I'm just suggesting for Chester's advantage over other pets to be brought back down so pets return to being entirely a cosmetic choice.
For light pets, it's a slightly different case. As you progress through the game, the light pets get better and better before ending with the Suspicious Looking Tentacle. Personally, my favorite light pet is the Jewel of Light from the Empress, but being pragmatic about it.....it doesn't compete with other end game pets. Ideally, I'd love to just equip something like the Suspicious Tentacle then overlay it with the Empress pet.
There's so much vanity in the game that what you're actual equipment is hardly matters when it's been hidden by something else. I believe both these changes would further enforce this.
