PC What are your opinions on the Shield of Cthulhu?

I used to equip it religiously, one playthrough i decided to not use it and realized that I never actually need it at all.

After you know better movement options, Shield of Cthulhu is has no use at all. Magi, some mounts, Bundle of Horseshoe Balloons... All of these are better movement than Shield of Cthulhu, and also have more uses.

Overall, I don't like it, I don't use it, in fact I actually despise it. One of the most overrated items in the game for sure. And additionally, what @Coleyohley said in his post is something I completely agree with: Shield of Cthulhu has damaged this game's design, to the point of making later stages of the game also feel much worse.
Basically me except I never constantly equipped it. I was like "okay, let's see what the shield of cthulhu hype is about" and 2 seconds later I was like "I do not get people, this thing is overrated and terrible", then proceeded to sell it. But hey, I never had the motivation to finish expert mode, so take my opinions with many grains of salt.

As a (former) console player, NO.

The shield of cthulhu's true value is revealed in boss fights, dashing allows you to dodge bosses even if you're playing the game really imprecisely, and imo it becomes a crutch for many players, like the RoD except you don't actually have to grind for it. The SoC is also good against queen bee and fishron stage 3.

The SoC is great for quickly getting max speed or for changing directions. The bonk can be annoying, especially if you're stuck inside Skeletron's or Skeletron Prime's head. My biggest gripe with it is how dashes are activated. It makes it so annoying to build arenas with it equipped.

I like using it to parry Duke Fishron in Expert, or Skeletron when his head is spinning, and it can be used to get a running start with Hermes boots, not to mention it's just fun to parry, and safe too, especially earlygame.

I unequip it when building though, because it's very easy to accidentally tap the dash unintentionally.

I don't like its, dash its always too short, hits something will I'm trying to use it, or just takes up something more useful.
My mindset has always been why have a dash to avoid getting hit when I could just not end up in that solution to begin with and even then just have better movement speed. I always use swiftness and food to move way faster, and I honestly use the ankh shield/frost shield over it due to more defense and no knockback.

Master ninja gear is a different story tho

I used to be able to this consistently, then one day it just stopped working for me and the boss would hit me anyway; I'm still not entirely sure why. Personally, I find it far more reliable to dash out of his way rather than into it.

Strange, not sure why that could be the case. I generally dash before he does, and try to aim it so that mid-dash I hit him, as opposed to dashing in response to his dash starting. That's how I reliably do it 100% of the time and have enough time between dashes for the cooldown of the shield. Dashing out of the way works too, I just like the invulnerability.
