Why does my game crash whenever i hit "Update All" in mod downloads

I've been trying to play calamity with my friend, but he downloaded the newest versions of the mods. Whenever I try to update my mods by hitting "update all" in the download mod section of the game, it freezes completely and I have to close it.

I don't think that there is any other way to update my mods, and my friend doesn't know how to download the older versions of them, so I'm stuck unable to play with my friend.

I would really appreciate any feedback as to what I should do, or any other way to update a mod one at a time.

restarting steam usually fixes it as it downloads mods via workshop when the game is closed.
